Trib has already written its primary and general election endorsements for Rauner. All editorial and “news” operations will be geared in support. Chicago Magazine is a Tribune property. Rauner used to own part of the Sun-Times and is buds with the current ownership. Crain’s will play to its audience with a Rauner nod. BGA is a bought and paid for subsidiary of Rauner et. al. None of the downstate papers have the wherewithal or interest in doing any digging. No one is or will be asking Rauner tough questions. Come 3/19, if Rauner wins, PQ better be ready to start spending and hitting him. The “campaign starts after Labor Day approach” is political death. Obama got to work defining McCain and Romney early. Think there could be a lesson there? It’s also what Rauner is doing to Quinn with this ad. Also, if PQ is wise, they will get some of the Obama computer and targeting know-how on their side, and not just rely on TV. TV alone won’t carry the day anymore. It doesn’t mean a lack of intelligence. It means someone who does vote but does not spend a lot of time researching their votes. They know something about the people at the top of the ballot, but by the 3rd or 4th race, they’re reverting to whatever they may have heard or thought they heard about the race. Sometimes they’re folks who make up their minds quickly on someone because they saw a commercial or piece of mail where a candidate rung their specific bell. Shake things up/fix fiscal issues: I froze lawmakers pay and forced them to solve the pension problem…. etc etc The problem with everything Rauner claims to be running on is that Quinn can actually come up with an example of doing just that, and Rauner hasnt given us anything to show how he plans to effectuate those sound bites himself. Oh and I think Vallas goes well to supporting the not a union puppet canidate as well. I’m willing to bet its someone who will soon need to find another area of specialization. I don’t think the tactics are as effective as they used to be (though gosh only knows that there are aleady some who are “piloting” others) and therefore they’re becoming costly, ineffective busy work.
