Ten single-stall ISU bathrooms have Fox News in a snit

Friday, Jul 11, 2014

* From the Illinois State University student newspaper

New “All-Gender” signs will be replacing the “Family” signs outside of single stall restrooms at ISU.

Michael Shane McCreery, director and ethics officer in the Office of Equal Opportunity, Ethics and Access, said the idea for the new signs came from Sandy Colbs, the director of the Student Counseling Services.

Colbs posted a picture of the new restroom sign on Facebook and McCreery thought it was a great idea.

McCreery said he did some research and found that other universities were making the same transition.

For example, Illinois Wesleyan University made similar changes about a year ago. […]

Only single stall restrooms will be impacted: one in the Bone Student Center, one in Student Counseling Services and a couple throughout the dormitories.

McCreery said he does not anticipate more than 10 restrooms being affected.

* It all seems rather innocuous. I mean, transgendered folks could use them before, families can still use them, heck, you or I could use them. But Fox News freaked out…

* They were so creeped out by this that they eventually followed up. Fox guy Steve Doocy did a live shot outside the studios with people he claimed were “Fox friends”

The updated signage will include a symbol of a half-man and half-woman, which has Doocy and company pretty confused and unsettled. The hand-picked crew of “Fox fans”? Not so much.

When Doocy asked a boy if he “would have any idea” what the symbol meant, the youngster suggested it might indicate a “family restroom.”

An older man next to the boy agreed.

“I could see that,” he said.

At that point, confident that he had planted the seeds for some righteous indignation, Doocy explained the moral deterioration at Illinois State University.

“See, they were designated as ‘family restrooms’ in the past and now, apparently, they’re going to be known as ‘all-gender’ restrooms,” Doocy explained.

“Does that make sense?” he asked a woman.

It did make sense.

“Restrooms for both genders,” she said cheerily.

Doocy was persistent.

“That’s right. Bathrooms for both genders, or transgenders,” he said, turning to a man in a Pittsburgh Pirates T-shirt. Surely, he shares Doocy’s mixture of confusion and anxiety!

“Transgender, that’s right,” the man replied dully.

So, apparently it’s no big deal to them, either.

Maybe now men can get equality in the bathroom! No longer, will mens’ restrooms look like abandonned truck stop outhouses and womens’ bathroom look like a spa.

Better get some signage with “seat etiquette” pronto. Marriages end on this kind of thing. True dat; silly story.

  5. - Jimmy - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:14 pm:

It all starts with “transgenders” but eventually refugee children from Central America will be using them.

    Amen my brother….

  7. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:18 pm:

That signage is horrible, offensive and will only lead to juvenile snickering. It should be removed immediately.

I’m referring of course to the Bone Student Center.

We think the 2010 Brady campaign and Jumpin’Jason should be outraged, demand an audit and then take a five month nap.

  9. - OneMan - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:26 pm:

I’m referring of course to the Bone Student Center.

    Dude, you said bone….

Then again NIUs Holmes student center with it’s large tower never did cause references to a film actor.

  10. - Shark Sandwich - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:27 pm:

All this is just Fox News avoiding the REAL controversy: toilet paper roll draped OVER or UNDER!? C’mon, Fox, what are you afraid of????

  11. - Newsclown - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:28 pm:

Meh, the Fox people are still upset the special signs were taken off the water fountains, so now *anybody* might be drinking that water. If you know what they mean.

  12. - Norseman - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:29 pm:

Silly all around. Going to the expense of changing the signs is silly and having a cow over “All Gender” signage is silly. Of course Fox likes to milk every silly issue it can.

  13. - Anonymous - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:30 pm:

So in order to get some attention from Fox you change the signs on single stall bathrooms?

    Sheesh!!

  14. - northerswatersports - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:31 pm:

And why are we watching Fox News again?
Oh….yea…. they merged with Comedy Central !

  15. - olddog - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

Did she say “Indiana State University?” How can you be fair and balanced when you can’t get your facts straight?

The doodoo is really hitting the fan now, Fox.

  17. - hisgirlfriday - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:37 pm:

Heh. Remember a friend who attended U of C telling me about the all-gender bathrooms… in her dorm… more than 10 years ago.

Fox News could have gone after them instead of ISU and blamed Obama for it.

  18. - Aldyth - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:40 pm:

A lot of those bathrooms are accessible and end up being used by people with mobility issues, which is a real convenience for them.

The phrase tempest in a teapot comes to mind.

  19. - Anonymous - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 12:48 pm:

Yep, she did say Indiana University!

  20. - 47th Ward - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 1:15 pm:

Appropriate for Fox News to do a story about toilets since most of their news are full of ____.

  21. - Imjustabill - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 1:24 pm:

Those damn shemales are always leaving the toilet seats up.

  22. - Chicago Cynic - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 1:53 pm:

So Fox steps outside of the NEW YORK CITY studios and is surprised nbody is particularly alarmed about transgender folks. Umm, Steve, you ever walk around NYC before? Yawn.

  23. - Precinct Captain - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 2:24 pm:

    ==Slow news day at Fox?==

A regular day at Fox & Friends. For as much as I despise much of FNC’s primetime hosts, they are light years ahead of the morning dimwits.

  24. - MrJM - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 2:32 pm:

    What’s the big deal?

Our home has had two single-stall ‘all-gender’ restrooms for years…

Manufactured hysteria, thy name is FOX.

  26. - Concerned - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 2:46 pm:

That second video–MAJOR FAIL on Fox’ part! Wow. And the in-studio guy doubled down and made it worse.

  27. - Langhorne - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 2:55 pm:

    Much ado about nothing.

  28. - Former Downstater - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 2:58 pm:

Flying recently, I was incensed and horrified to see the gender neutral bathroom on my airplane. And then again later on my Amtrak train. What’s the world coming to!

  29. - Both Sides Now - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 3:44 pm:

There is a standard restroom sign that is utilized everywhere. It’s a woman silhouette on the left, a man silhouette on the right and a line in-between. It symbolizes either/or or equal access. Readily accepted. No controversy. Stupid for FOX to make a big deal out of this but also stupid for ISU to create a new sign when none was necessary. Waste of time and money.

  30. - icanthardlywait - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 4:01 pm:

ISU isn’t coming up with new signage. I saw the sign they will us posted on Facebook. It is a stock sign you can buy for $6. Fox must have invented that sign much like they invent most of the “news” they report.

I don’t see how this is news.

  31. - Lt. Guv - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 4:05 pm:

But hisgirlfriday, at the U of C, it’s clearly a plot by Obama.

    What a bunch of freaks.

  32. - jerry 101 - Friday, Jul 11, 14 @ 5:08 pm:

I’ve been to offices where the restrooms are marked “Male Identified” and “Female Identified”

Good god, imagine the pearl clutching and fake righteous indignation if Fox News found out.
