Crossover appeal

Thursday, Sep 4, 2014 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Two new Reboot polls…

* Jesse White leads 61-26-5, with 7 percent undecided

* Lisa Madigan leads 54-30-5, with 7 percent undecided

White’s support among Republicans is 37 percent and he’s getting 55 percent of independents. Madigan is supported by 23 percent of Republicans and 49 percent of independents. Madigan’s opponent doesn’t have the cash to change that dynamic, but isn’t giving up. From a press release

Republican Attorney General Candidate Paul Schimpf held a press conference [yesterday] and called on Attorney General Lisa Madigan to recuse herself from giving legal advice on all matters involving the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative (“NRI”). Madigan has told the media that she doesn’t believe she has a conflict of interest.

“Ms. Madigan’s inability to understand that there is a conflict of interest in this situation calls into question her competence to serve as Attorney General for the State of Illinois,” said Schimpf. “Her belief is contrary to the fundamentals of practicing law as defined by the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct Rule 1.7 on Conflicts of Interest. Ms. Madigan, as Attorney General, was in a position to provide oversight on this program and failed to do so – a fact not in dispute. She is a material witness in the investigation of the failed Neighborhood Recovery Initiative and needs to recuse herself as soon as possible in this matter.”

There’s been little to no coverage of AG Madigan’s role in NRI. She was, indeed, on the board that oversaw the program. A bit more is here.

A tree fell in a forest where no one was there to hear it. Did it make a noise? Yes, but barely.

  2. - Tommydanger - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:20 pm:

If people can’t get angry/motivated over people dying in a nursing home owned by Bruce Rauner’s GTCR outfit, then I’m not sure they’ll get overly excited about the AG’s role on a board that oversaw the misuse of taxpayer dollars.

  3. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:23 pm:

    What we “know”:

    Lisa Madigan
    Jesse White
    Judy Baar Topinka

Races that the outcomes aren’t “if” but “by how much”

Yikes, the Independents for Lisa and especially Jesse are off the charts good for long sitting incumbents.

Jesse White can help Quinn more than Frerichs, but an engaged Jesse White will help both ends of the Dem ticket.

Comptroller Topinka can really help Cross. While not coattails in a traditional sense, keeping the GOP mindset after voters vote for Topinka can only help Cross, if Cross can piggyback on the Topinka Train poised to go through Sheila.

The irony might be that these three unbelievably gifted politicians might carry more weight than the Top race, and they could be more of a factor, logistically, for Treasurer than the Top race hopes it could.

The Dems really need those two to assist in GOTV, and be very visible in helping Quinn, as much as they can. A tightrope tough to walk.

Can Sheila beat the “no-names” running for AG & SOS on the GOP side, in percentage or in raw ballots? That’s a fun over/under to consider.

  4. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:23 pm:

There was no political benefit for Madigan in spewing $54,500,000 in approved grants across Southern Cook County. She was headed for another landslide win.

Pat Quinn was the chief beneficiary of own money used that way, in that area, and in time for that election. Coincident? Not when we also see that the grant money didn’t have to be announced and in Democratic hands when it was. A soon-to-be Ex-Governor Quinn had enough time between an election loss and Inauguration Day to reward his supporters similarly.

    Nope. Not a coincident.

Finally, making Madigan answer regarding NRI keeps it in the news until the first court dates in a few more weeks.

  5. - Tommydanger - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:26 pm:

OW: Here’s betting that the under-vote on the Governor’s race is greater than under-vote for the race for SOS or AG.

  6. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:28 pm:

===Here’s betting that the under-vote on the Governor’s race is greater than===

Meh. Voters are most motivated by the governor’s race in these off-years. If they’re not gonna vote for governor, they’ll probably just stay home.

    ==- VanillaMan - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:23 pm:==

The word you’re looking for is a noun.

  8. - Da Moat - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:33 pm:

OW: I agree on your prediction. But these pols have residual name recognition. When Judy ran against a known “public official a” she still got smoked. Different kettle of fish amongst Governor and the other offices. Still cannot figure out Sheila Simon; never should have bailed on PQ, who likely will win again.

  9. - Reformed Public Servant - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:35 pm:

Wow! This Schimpf guy is qualified…too bad he’s running against Lisa!
“If we ever want to get Illinois turned around, we’re going to have to turn away from this political class and we’re going to have to look for our leaders based on their competence, not their connections.” Schimpf.

  10. - wordslinger - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:38 pm:

How did we end up with a couple of hyperbolic gas bags named Schimpf and a Schrimpf at the same time? Bad karma?

  11. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:40 pm:

===…When Judy ran against a known “public official a”…===

    Let’s be very clear;

The financials and advertising Blago put in full court press was more of a mitigating factor than anything that was done against him.

You say something loud enough, and long enough, wether it’s true or not…some people believe it. That race was dictated by relentless monies and Ads, and the rest fell into place for Blago.

  12. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:43 pm:

    - Tommydanger -, I still think the best over/under is the Sheila numbers versus the GOP candidates against Jesse and Lisa.

That might be more personally crushing for Sheila than losing.

  13. - the Patriot - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:43 pm:

Lisa Madigan is not competent but for the job she was hired to do…protect the speaker. She let one governor rob us blind and prosecuted no one. Watch another mishandle money, and prosecuted no one. Accused hard working union employees of work comp fraud, never prosecuted, or apologized when it was proven there was no fraud. We have allegations of hundreds of illegal hires and nothing.

The reality is she is untouchable. The media won’t ask her why no one was prosecuted over Menard carpal tunnel, whey she never prosecuted the hundreds who were illegally hired by Rod, Why she said nothing about NRI.

My guess is Obama will dump her into the federal judiciary before he leaves. The speaker won’t live forever and when he is gone, she will get destroyed because when you sit down and talk to her, you realize she is not a bad person, just not very smart.

  14. - Da Moat - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:50 pm:

Oswego: Blago and his ilk mocked JBT for saying a rolling pin could be an assault weapon. If the average illinois voter (not commenters here, of course ) thinks that made her wrong, they are wrong. More husbands have been bashed by common household objects than any type of firearm. I think you’re correct…people believe garbage. I also believe Blago and Ryan should not have gone to prison. Case of the Feds making up crimes and soft, daft jurors buying it.

  15. - Robert the Bruce - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:53 pm:

==How did we end up with a couple of hyperbolic gas bags named Schimpf and a Schrimpf at the same time?==
And which one of them was the overmatched complainer who last took on MJ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=obkos1QG3FY (side note: while finding this clip, I had to watch 3 sec of a Rauner ad on youtube)

  16. - Formerly Known As... - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:59 pm:

It may not change much, but Mrs. Madigan should recuse herself and her office from this process.

There is no reason to believe she has anything to worry about as it relates to the NRI, but there is an obvious conflict of interest.

It would be more concerning and suspicious if she did not recuse, which she probably will.

  17. - Da Moat - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 1:59 pm:

Regarding little to no coverage of Lisa Madigan’s role in anything…come on. Media is biased in favor of Democrats. They can do no wrong. Period. Don’t say Fox News Channel isn’t. O’Reilly shouts down people that Agree with whatever he is peddling that day and Megyn Kelly…well.

  18. - train111 - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 2:02 pm:

In 2010 Jesse White lost in 2 counties (Richland and Edwards) Can he match that same feat today??

  19. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 2:05 pm:

    ===In 2010 Jesse White lost in 2 counties ===

In 2002, he won all of ‘em.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 2:07 pm:

    - Da Moat -, I think Comptroller Topinka leading by 20 points in the recent poll, in her current job, speaks more to her and her skills than what Blago wanted others to “believe”

As to GHR and Blago; I’ll let my past remarks speak for themselves on them both, so we can move on, by respect to you.

===My guess is Obama will dump her into the federal judiciary before he leaves. The speaker won’t live forever and when he is gone, she will get destroyed because when you sit down and talk to her, you realize she is not a bad person, just not very smart.===

Oh no, you need to get on the “running for governor” train, if you believe all the silliness you think of Lisa. You need to finish your Kassian talking points.

  21. - Demoralized - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 2:41 pm:

==Lisa Madigan is not competent but for the job she was hired to do…protect the speaker.==

Last I checked she was ELECTED by the people of the state.

==The reality is she is untouchable.==

She’s up for re-election. Don’t vote for her if you don’t like her. She’s hardly untouchable. You just don’t like it because she’s going to win again. I suppose if that makes her untouchable in your book, fine.

==why she never prosecuted the hundreds who were illegally hired by Rod==

Why would she prosecute people hired for jobs? I wasn’t aware it was illegal to get hired. If you have evidence they did something nefarious to get their jobs then, please, provide the evidence.

==My guess is Obama will dump her into the federal judiciary before he leaves==

Good on him if he does.

==when he is gone, she will get destroyed ==

And there’s the final nail in the coffin of your insanity.

  22. - Big Muddy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 3:03 pm:

=You say something loud enough, and long enough, wether it’s true or not…some people believe it. That race was dictated by relentless monies and Ads, and the rest fell into place for Blago.=
    OW,
Change the last word in this quote of yours from Blago to Rauner. Does it still ring true?

  23. - Da Moat - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 3:16 pm:

Big Muddy Buddy: I like your comment. Rauners whole thing about “union bosses vis-a-vis union members is specious and spurious. Guy has no clue and doesn’t blink. Problem is, Gov. PotatoHead is no better and we are screwed.

  24. - A guy... - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 3:17 pm:

Willie, did it ever occur to you that Jesse White has huge cross-over appeal because he’s stayed clear of the kinds of races you’re encouraging him to get involved in? Lisa has done similarly. There are strong GOPers, not just independents who will cross over for them. Like me. I have before. I may again. I’m certain of it in at least one case.

  25. - Gator - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 3:23 pm:

I don’t live under a rock or anything, but this is the first I’ve heard of Lisa’s involvement in NRI.

  26. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 3:24 pm:

“- A Guy… -,did it ever occur to you” that I was speaking specifically to 2014 and not about anything pertaining to the past…at all?

You afraid Jesse stumping for Quinn might hurt Bruce, you know Jesse talking about Rauner wanting “no” minimum wage, but now Rauner won’t support the ballot initiative, or…

    You need to read.

How’s that response from HQ to the math of Rauner’s budgetary fairy tales? Need more “sugar” to fool voters at the door? lol

  27. - A guy... - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 4:05 pm:

Sorry Willie, is Jesse out there stumping hard for Pat Quinn and I’ve missed it? Are he and Lisa taking turns introducing him at rallies from Cairo to South Beloit and I’m just otherwise occupied with you?

The closest I get to HQ is a call center in Dupage. Frankly, if someone asked me to go to HQ, I’d have to ask where to go. And, for your tartness, no more sugar for you.

  28. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 4:11 pm:

===Sorry Willie, is Jesse out there stumping hard for Pat Quinn and I’ve missed it?===

I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more about Jesse calling out Rauner’s buying of votes…

===Are he and Lisa taking turns introducing him at rallies from Cairo to South Beloit and I’m just otherwise occupied with you?===

Here is where you are a Dope and don’t read.

I never mentioned Lisa once stumping for Quinn.

Read bad comment to what I write, not what you would like to see written.

=== And, for your tartness, no more sugar for you.===

If that means not lying to try and sell the Bruce Rauner lies, that’s fine with me, lol. I do appreciate you adding “sugar” and Slip and Sue using “Magic”…

    …but truth always missing.

  29. - A guy... - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 4:26 pm:

Now, now, Willie, everything will be alright. No sugar but a little warm milk and a snuggie.

  30. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 4:38 pm:

For homework tonight, - A Guy… -, read something all the way through. Maybe you gave to add “sugar” to Rauner Dopiness because you don’t read it all the way through, or don’t comprehend.

People make up things all the time they don’t understand.

BTW, you failed to address what I called out.

  31. - Anon - Thursday, Sep 4, 14 @ 6:09 pm:

If Schimf is serious about the alleged “conflict of interest,” why doesn’t he file an ARDC complaint?
