Pumpkin it is!

Thursday, Apr 16, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The bill now goes to the Senate…

Rep. Sommer has introduced just three other House bills this year, only one of which has made it out of committee

Amends the Flag Display Act. Requires the Governor to issue an official notice to fly the United States national flag, the State flag of Illinois, and the appropriate military flag upon the death of a resident of this State killed during on duty training for active military duty.

I think the pumpkin bill is the most publicity he’s ever received.

Eli’s cheesecake should be the official state pie.

  2. - Hon. John Fritchey - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:11 pm:

How is Rep. Jay ‘Punkinhead’ Hoffman not a Chief Sponsor of this bill?

After the bill was carved up in committee, the board lit up….never mind…

==Rep. Sommer says designating pumpkin as the official state pie would help recognize the good things about Illinois.==

Man, we’re really scraping the bottom of the barrel if we’ve got to turn to pumpkin pie as a positive aspect of the state.

  6. - Stones - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:21 pm:

Thank goodness we’ve put pension reform on hold to address really important matters.

In defense of Rep. Sommer he was the lead sponsor of a key reform bill for the adoption of children. It passed yesterday.

  9. - AC - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:27 pm:

Does this count as a success in the turnaround agenda?

  10. - Team Sleep - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:30 pm:

Illinois is the world’s leading pumpkin producer. Morton is home of the annual Pumpkin Fest. Rep. Sommer is from Morton. Ding ding ding!

    At least it wasn’t a state raptor…

Guess I missed it here and in the papers where the budget got passed so the GA could spare the time for pumpkins.

“This is NOT one of the votes I’m demanding. I don’t have a $&@#% problem with this.

    Signed,

    Bruce Rauner
    Governor
    State of Illinois”

  14. - Juvenal - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:41 pm:

An 8″ pumpkin pie contains 2500 calories and over 100 grams of fat.

That’s about the same as 10 candy bars, before you add the whipped cream.

Don’t get me wrong, I like pumpkin pie, but “healthy to eat” it is not.

  15. - Cable Line Beer Gardener - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 3:48 pm:

    @Juvenal
but a slice or 1/8th of that pie has only 323 calories. Moderation is key to a healthy diet.

  16. - ??? - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 4:03 pm:

A silly bill, yes, but why the “no” and “present” votes? Apple or cherry fans, perhaps?

  17. - D.P.Gumby - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 4:04 pm:

Generally, when catapulted toward a governor, pumpkin pie has better aerodynamics and adhesion that other pie fillings. Moreover, the whipped cream cushions the landing on the face of the designated target. However, greater training is needed to assure accuracy. Over all, a good choice.

  18. - Anonymous - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 4:19 pm:

    Apple, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie.
    Who’s afraid to holler, I?

  19. - walker - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 4:45 pm:

    Humble Pie more like it.

  20. - Anon - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 4:52 pm:

  21. - real one - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 5:31 pm:

  22. - Amalia - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 5:51 pm:

I second the request for an explanation of the three NO votes! there must be something interesting there.

  23. - olddog - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 6:15 pm:

===How is Rep. Jay ‘Punkinhead’ Hoffman not a Chief Sponsor of this bill?===
I am surprised he was able to vote yes. Obviously he has a conflict of interest.

  27. - Justan Observer - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 6:44 pm:

To those questioning how in the world three folks actually ended up voting “no” to this silly waste of legislative time (which we are all paying for, of course)…
    Three possibilities:
    1- Three folks were so outraged that they were actually taking a vote on this, in th State House — instead of dealing with genuine issues, in a time of fiscal crisis and rampant cuts and a outstanding solution for the pension theivery still to be dealt with — that they decided to take it out on the bill;
2 - Three of those present actually did get a bit confused, and thought this was one of those votes that might tally up toward Gov. Rauner’s “I’ve got 20 million bucks in my Carhart pockets, here, , and I need ten — or was it eight? Six? votes…”

2 - Three of our esteemed legislators prefer Gino’s East, and were already constructing a bill to make it the State Pie… as soon as they test their carbohydrates (?)

  28. - Anon221 - Thursday, Apr 16, 15 @ 6:46 pm:

Sorry- long day. Meant to say Jurassic or buteo?

Of all the problems existing in the State of Illinos and what are they concentrating on, THE STATE PIE!

Kick them all out and elect representatives that will work for you.
