The hazards of outsourcing

Tuesday, May 5, 2015 - Posted by Rich Miller

* WSIU

After spending nearly 65 million dollars… Governor Bruce Rauner’s campaign has been assessed a penalty by the State Board of Elections.

Director Steve Sandvoss confirms it’s because of a late report filing … but says he can’t give details.

“In light of fairness to the respondent and due fairness principles, we don’t comment publicly on the nature of an ongoing proceeding. But rather, we’ll let the process bear itself out.”

A spokesman for the governor says there was a “snafu.” He says a firm hired to file contributions paperwork prepared a report … but failed to upload it. The mistake was corrected eight hours later.

Hilarious.

SNAFU. It sometimes amazes me to hear spokes people use that term. Have they forgotten what it actually stands for?

I thought he only hired “superstars”??

It’s in on time, or it’s not. No excuses.

Ironic that we care so much about technical timeliness, and not about the people who contribute, how much, and what they think they are buying.

Logan, I was thinking the same thing.

JAL, I suspect they don’t know those letters actually stand for anything, especially not a saying that can’t be repeated on this blog. Totally FUBAR.

I am no fan of Mr. Rauner, but this situation could happen to any candidate. It is much ado about very little since it was filed by first thing in the morning after it was due. 8 hours late, even at the final moments of the election cycle deserve a fine, but only a small one and not headlines. This is deserving of 1″ in the newspaper (for those of us who like to read real print).

Hmmm. Sounds like a good defense tactic for Aaron Schock, although his amended filings might be a couple years “late.”

  8. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:44 am:

    Anon,

How late was it? All we know now is what the Rauner campaign wants to tell us. It could happen to anyone, yes, but if you’re a mega CEO running a supposedly technically sound operation, this is not an error that should be made

  9. - Team Sleep - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:46 am:

I would type my acronym for “snafu” but Rich would turn me into Ban Carson. :/

  10. - Peoria Guy - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:51 am:

Not a big deal. A few hours late. I have been a campaign treasurer and stuff happens–though it did not happen to me :)

  11. - A guy - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:52 am:

The Election Commission can be a very frustrating experience. In time, you’ll see almost everyone has had a deadline issue or an electronic transfer issue. It’s not a user-friendly experience at all. That being said, there are never good excuses here. You have to take into account the problems there and file on time. Headache or not, it’s the law.

  12. - Liberty - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:53 am:

You get what you pay for…

  13. - Wordslinger - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 10:54 am:

Does the state GOP use the same firm?

Yesterday, the Illinois Republican Party reported to ISBE a May 1, 2015, contribution of $10,800 from:

    Rauner, Bruce
    Occupation: Chairman
    Employer: GTCR
    Address: (street address) Winnetka

    We’re in good hands, right?

  15. - Wumpus - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 11:10 am:

He’s still gov, I doubt he cares

How far do we let this stuff slide?
Rules are rules, unless of course we just let it go this time!

  17. - Norseman - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 12:07 pm:

I guess he doesn’t use superstar staffers for campaign reporting.

  18. - WhoKnew - Tuesday, May 5, 15 @ 12:56 pm:

    Situation normal — all right!
