Rauner claims he’s meeting with Dem legislators today

Thursday, Jul 28, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Quincy Herald-Whig

Rauner will be meeting with Democrats from the Legislature in Chicago on Thursday to talk about what is needed in the upcoming budget.

Interesting, especially since many Democratic legislators are either in Philadelphia or out walking precincts today. But, hey, it’s a good thing if true.

* I asked reporter Doug Wilson if Gov. Rauner disclosed who he was meeting with…

No. The question was about whether there have been ongoing negotiations about what will follow the stopgap budget. Rauner started by saying that most lawmakers are more focused on their own elections, but then he said he was returning to Chicago on Wednesday night and would be meeting Thursday with some legislators to talk about the budget.

No word yet from the governor’s office about who he’s seeing today. I’ll let you know if they ever respond.

    Is Ken Dunkin in town?

“No word yet from the governor’s office about who he’s seeing today.”

Until January 2017, Ken Dunkin is a “Democrat from the Legislature in Chicago.”

They will only need two chairs for that meeting.

  4. - Joe M - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 11:53 am:

After meeting with Jack Franks and Ken Dunkin he will say the Democrats actually support him, not Madigan.

    “It is definitively baloney.”

  6. - HRC2016 - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 12:02 pm:

Can we really believe anything he says anymore?

  7. - How Ironic - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 12:09 pm:

I’ll only believe it when I see the Gov, and the Tops all in the same room, each holding today’s copy of the newspaper (with the date visible).

Until then…more fanciful ramblings from the Gov.

  8. - One to the Dome - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 12:10 pm:

Maybe the Gov will set up a video conference from Chicago for all the key budgetary Democratic legislators (who are mostly at the DNC) so they can miss part of a historic day to discuss aspects of the Turn Around Agenda since the past year and half worked so well.

    >Rauner claims he’s meeting with Dem legislators today

It’s a trivial thing, really, a claimed meeting, but it encapsulates the entire Rauner style of governing. What he says and what he does are different things. He does this with brilliance and great effectiveness.

He has a clear vision of the state: fewer human service providers, fewer state higher education institutions, cheaper labor through weakened unions and ending prevailing wage, and drastically reduced state spending having dug us into a back-breaking financial hole.

Except for the labor part (so far) he is accomplishing exactly what he set out to do with complete compliance from Republican Legislators, ineffectiveness of Democratic Legislators, and a mainstream media that either enables him or chases his words thus obscuring his actions.

It’s been quite awhile since Illinois had a strong, skilled governor, but agree or disagree, Rauner is brilliant.

This meeting has been on the books for 20 months. Rauner scheduled it during that famous election night phone call with the Dem leaders.

If he was Raunocchio his nose would end in China.

  11. - Ghost - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 12:40 pm:

Until the gov actually mentions raising taxes it doesnt matter who he meets with.

BTW where is the 500 million in saving from efficiencies at CMS? we could give that to social service providers

  12. - G'Kar - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 12:43 pm:

    I suspect Kate Cloonen won’t be attending./s

A Confused Bruce Rauner Stumbles into a Democratic Legislators meeting
Yet Rauner continues to back an 8 billion dollar budget deficit.

Was he playing Candy Crush and his attendance was by pure happenstance?

    Is he politically calculating?

    Is he just confused?

I can’t wait for the Press Conference after this meeting concludes !!!!!

Tell them to check his calendar. It’s right on top of his desk, and he doesn’t keep it secret. Transparency is this administration’s middle name.

I assume the meeting was held in Madeupville.

===I’ll let you know if they ever respond.===

It’s almost 5:00pm, is the meeting still underway or are they meeting for dinner?

    Lol.

  22. - illini - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 5:02 pm:

I’m still waiting for the Governors ace Press Shop to tell us what they talked about and all the progress that was made !!!!

I’m thinking RNUG is correct. Just one more example of why we should trust what our Governor says about negotiating the budget.

  23. - Mama - Thursday, Jul 28, 16 @ 5:32 pm:

Is he trying to buy off another Democrat now Dunkin is gone?
