Poshard says he’s visiting 48 counties before election day

Friday, Oct 7, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* That’s a lot of chicken dinners

Glenn Poshard, a former state senator, U.S. congressman and gubernatorial candidate, was the keynote speaker at the Fayette County Democratic Central Committee chicken dinner on Saturday night at the American Legion Home in Vandalia. Poshard has been asked by the Democratic County Chairmen’s Association to help with its “Get Out the Vote” drive, visiting 48 counties in Illinois.

Poshard said his message during those stops is “what it means to be a Democrat, the values that we always stood for.”

* His basic message

Former Illinois gubernatorial candidate Glenn Poshard called on Democrats at their annual Country Jamboree to not stay silent in the face of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s “buffoonery.”

“Donald Trump is the epitome of the philosophy of their party,” Mr. Poshard said. “What a shameful act that is, in this democracy, to stand up and tell the American people, ‘I’m smart for avoiding taxes when I am bragging about being a billionaire.’”

Mr. Poshard was the guest speaker at the Rock Island County Democrats Annual Country Jamboree Thursday evening at the American Legion, 829 16th Ave.. […]

Mr. Poshard told attendees that it was important for them to remember the party’s five core values: balance the budget; equal educational opportunities for all; stand up for unions; equal justice before the law; and protect the most vulnerable among us.

Here’s hoping he also draws obvious line between Trump and Rauner

  2. - Ahoy! - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 1:24 pm:

It’s a lot easier for Poshard to rail against Trump than it is for him to stand up for the Illinois Democrats or even to back their track record. I didn’t see a mention of Madigan in there.

    Plotting another run?

  4. - Honeybear - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 1:28 pm:

There is someone doing something, doing all he can to fight and fix the problem.

Hard to extol that whole “balance the budget” thing in the 5 core principles. That being said, I’ve always really liked Poshard. Wish there were many more like him.

    LOL

You anti-Madigan types slay me sometimes. He was speaking at a Democratic Party event, for crying out loud.

Everybody, ideally, believes in a balanced budget. Dems want to balance the budget with more revenue. Repubs want to balance it with cuts.

Um, have you been asleep for the past 2 years?

The Republican governor has said he will agree to revenues and hasn’t proposed all that many big cuts.

    Poshard is an embarrassment. #plagiarism

Glenn is one of the finest ambassadors the ILLDEMS could possibly have at this time.

He is recognized and respected in addition to being and rousing and unifying speaker ( not quite on par with the late Ken Grey, but close ).

Almost half the counties before November 8 - quite an itinerary.

And, the postings did not mention that he was also President of SIU. Small detail.

–You anti-Madigan types slay me sometimes. He was speaking at a Democratic Party event, for crying out loud.–

I understand that (and yes I am anti-Madigan, long before it was cool and even before the t-shirts) but if the head of your party is getting kicked around all over the place, wouldn’t you support them especially given the legislative races, unless you thought they were a liability?

If a Republican was at a Republican rally and didn’t mention Trump (which i wouldn’t blame them, unless it would be to denounce the man) it would make national headlines.

Both people are kind of toxic to their parties right now, just one is at the State level and one is at the Federal level.

“Um, have you been asleep for the past 2 years?”
Last year and a half tops. In any event, whatever Rauner believes or will settle on, he said that Illinois does not have a revenue problem, but has a spending problem. His first budget called for $4.19 B in cuts.

  13. - 37B - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:15 pm:

    Sorry. Anonymous 2:12 was me.

    Or Hillary.

  15. - Juice - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:18 pm:

Anonymous, but most of those cuts were actual reductions in state services, they were attempts to not pay bills that the state already owes, particularly with regards to pensions and the backlog of group health insurance bills.

Other than who he has chosen to take hostage, the Governor has not shown that much of a willingness of doing the dirty work of getting the State to spend less money.

  16. - DGD - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:25 pm:

    ** I’m smart for avoiding taxes **

Except he didn’t avoid taxes, he followed the law.

  17. - Michelle Flaherty - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:41 pm:

If Glenn could find Cook he would have been governor.

  18. - Angry Chicagoan - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:50 pm:

Who was the one who originally pointed out an unfunded pension ramp was not exactly a smart idea? Madigan. Who’s the one who has consistently favored more fiscally conservative solutions to policy problems? Madigan. For all the insider stuff nobody likes, such as how much his law practice overlaps government business, or how skeptical he is of radical change such as tax progressivity or broadening the sales tax base, or how long he’s been around, he’s more like the Cassandra of this state than the Nero.

  19. - Jackie - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 2:53 pm:

    Who?

  20. - Jaded - Friday, Oct 7, 16 @ 3:02 pm:

==If Glenn could find Cook he would have been governor.==
Yea because Cook County is famous for electing pro-gun, pro-life, anti-gay marriage Democrats. The truth is every time he showed up in Cook County he lost votes.

I’m sleepy just thinking about it.

Poshard is a cut above the typical R or D pol. When he had no GOP opponent in 1990, but was challenged by a 3rd party candidate he could have easily knocked off, Poshard did not challege the guy because, unlike most politicians, he never shies away from competition. He said the 3rd party guy had been criticizing him for years, and he relished the opportunity to give him a good ass whipping. That he did, 84% to 16%. Poshard said that finally shut the guy up for good!

I heard Poshard speak recently and he did mention Hillary, tho not Madigan. He gives one helluva stem winder. When I told him he should run for Gov. again, he said, “I’m too old to run.” I told him not so, you’re younger than Bernie Sanders, and he had a good laugh.

Poshard was recently appointed to fill a Community College Board vacancy, so he may in fact be running again for that seat in April!
