69 percent say Illinois on wrong track, 69 percent say budget is most important issue

Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’ve hesitated to use this poll for two reasons. First, it’s from an advertiser. Second, it’s an online poll. So, I’ll leave it up to you if it’s worthy of discussion

1. Generally speaking, do you feel that things in Illinois are headed in the right direction?

    • Yes 17%
    • No 69%
    • Unsure 14%

2. Of the following issues, which do you think are the most important to the state of Illinois?

    • Budget 69%
    • Health Care 21%
    • Recreational Marijuana 5%
    • Internet Privacy 3%
    • Other 3%

* Methodology

May 12-15, 2017. Total sample of 613 likely Illinois voters, aged 18 years old and older. Margin of error is +/- 4% 5-minute online survey hosted on Morar Consulting’s proprietary online research platform.

    Even if it is self-selected and skewed, at 69% the numbers are so lopsided you have to think the overall sense / direction of the participants has some accuracy.

    “Of the following issues, which do you think are the most important to the state of Illinois?”

    Of the following? To the state of Illinois?

    If that is the exact language of the second question, it’s amazing that more people didn’t choose “budget”.

    Even as a proponent of recreational weed to the point where I could be called a radical, I really don’t see how anyone could’ve picked that over the budget (or healthcare for that matter).

  4. - Bill - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 10:51 am:

    Given the options probably accurate

  5. - JoeMaddon - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 10:51 am:

    What a weird list of issues to choose from…

  6. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 10:53 am:

    “If you answered “budget” to #3, which of the following do you agree with more:

    a) In exchange for raising the income tax back to the time Governor Quinn was in office, there should be across the board 5% cuts to all state programs except education, and a Constitutional referendum should offered the voters to 1) curtail future public union benefits, 2) put term limits on elected officials and 3) forbid gerrymandering in drawing legislative districts.

    b) raise the taxes without any sequestration cuts or political reforms.

  7. - Red Rider - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 10:54 am:

    Who would be the 17%?

  8. - Real - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:01 am:

    @Red

    That would be Rauner supporting republicans.

  9. - From the 'Dale to HP - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:02 am:

    Nice

  10. - Gruntled University Employee - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:03 am:

    ===Who would be the 17%? ===

    Raunerites and the people that were too stoned to realize that they clicked on the wrong button.

  11. - PoliSciMajor - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:17 am:

    Nice

  12. - Anon - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:25 am:

    why wouldnt the pollster include right to work, work comp, term limits, and redistricting reform? That would have made the results more interesting.

  13. - Chicago Cynic - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 11:38 am:

    Have the 17% been to Illinois lately?

  14. - Skeptic - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 2:11 pm:

    5% really believe recreational pot is the most important issue in the state?

    That is 5% too many and tells me more than I wan to know about some of our citizens.

  15. - Rich Miller - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 2:14 pm:

    ===That is 5% too many===

    Take a breath.

  17. - Ron - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 3:14 pm:

    If you want tax revenue, those 5% are on to something very big. Like hundreds of millions in tax revenue annually.

    That’s a big pension payment.

  18. - justacitizen - Tuesday, May 23, 17 @ 10:07 pm:

    The 17% that think IL is on the right track must be the same population that think recreational marijuana is our most important issue.
