Quinn’s Obama ad shenanigan prompts rebuke: “Black voters won’t be bamboozled by him again”

Tuesday, Mar 20, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

[Bumped up to Tuesday for visibilty.]

* NBC 5

In the race for Illinois Attorney General, Pat Quinn’s campaign is running a radio ad touting an Obama endorsement as well — the catch being that former president endorsed Quinn in a different election for a different seat, during his failed gubernatorial re-election bid in 2014.

“You know, I’ve been attacked a lot this week by attack ads,” Pat Quinn told NBC 5. “President Obama stood up for me in 2014; he said I was a consumer advocate, a champion of working people.”

Quinn is using audio from President Obama’s 2014 endorsement in a black radio ad for Quinn’s 2018 attorney general race. Not cool at all.

* From Sen. Kwame Raoul’s spokesman Ron Holmes…

“Old dog, same tricks. Pat Quinn’s willingness to blatantly deceive the public is one of the reasons Bruce Rauner was victorious in 2014. Despite what Pat Quinn may think, black voters won’t be bamboozled by him again.”

* From the electronic Twitter machine…

Ouch.

Kwame’s campaign has been using Obama’s image since the start of the race. His ads mention him multiple times

Hey Rich, are there words in the English language beyond the word “Shenanigans”? I’m beginning to think there aren’t.

    ===beyond the word “Shenanigans”?===

    No.

  4. - wordslinger - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 10:29 pm:

Not cool at all. Can’t spin that one, Pat.

  5. - Northsider - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 10:30 pm:

Makes me glad I didn’t vote for PQ.

  6. - Pritzker Bahama Cabana Co. - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 10:32 pm:

It’d be a real shame for Democrats if Quinn wins tomorrow. I hope he pulls it off.

I realize that Quinn’s use of Obama’s name is shamelessly dishonest, but every other word out of Kwame’s mouth is ‘Obama.’ Not necessarily apples-to-apples, but give me a break.

  7. - TominChicago - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 10:37 pm:

I’ll bet Quinn gets 40% of African American vote.

  8. - Bobio - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 10:39 pm:

So it’s okay for Kwame to run 30 year old clips of Washington dissing him but Quinn can’t run 4 year old clips of Obama praising him?

  9. - Amalia - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 11:07 pm:

oh Kwame. Each of your ads mentions Obama. so sick of that.

  10. - Is it over yet? - Monday, Mar 19, 18 @ 11:41 pm:

Willfully deceiving voters? Quinn quoted a man who is alive to refute it if he wishes, and Raoul used his image endlessly as well. Raoul, in the proud tradition of Dan Hynes, Bill Brady, Bruce Rauner before him, used footage of Harold Washington 35 years ago. Mayor Washington, unfortunately, is unable to clarify his remarks further at this point.

Willfully deceiving voters? From the campaign that quoted a completely fake “Edgar County Watchdogs” headline that referenced an investigation that never happened in all its ads?

Apparently airing footage of one of the most admired people in the world speaking positively about you, when the other candidate has implicitly claimed to be the heir to his legacy, is dirty politics now, or a “shenanigan” or “not cool” as this blog would describe it.

Very tired of the reflexively angry, sanctimonious tone from the Raoul campaign. If they make it to the next round, they need to be strategic and smart, not just angry all the time. If they don’t, this is why they failed.

Pat Quinn is riding dirty. Wow. Didn’t expect that.

Cast my vote in this primary for Raoul solely on the basis of trying to block Quinn from getting this nomination. Do not regret it.

One more criticism about use of ‘shenanigans”, and you will be ‘skedaddled’ promptly.

    re·buke

    verb
    1. express sharp disapproval or criticism of (someone) because of their behavior or actions.
“she had rebuked him for drinking too much”
    synonyms: reprimand, reproach, scold, admonish, reprove, chastise, upbraid, berate, take to task, criticize, censure;
    noun
    1. an expression of sharp disapproval or criticism.
“he hadn’t meant it as a rebuke, but Neil flinched”
    synonyms: reprimand, reproach, reproof, scolding, admonishment, admonition, upbraiding, finger-wagging;

I realize the Raoul campaign’s superior tone is an attempt to make them sound like they are in a position to “rebuke” others they are running against, but I’d suggest that acandidate and staffer’s angry response to an effective ad the day before an election doesn’t rise to the level of a scolding, admonition, or reprimand, absent some authority to do so.

From where does the Raoul camp draw the legitimacy to “rebuke?” Surely not from its own record.

Hey Pat, that tightness around your neck is Squeezy. You own that, and that’s never going away.

  17. - Pot calling kettle - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 7:23 am:

“I’m Pat Quinn. You recognize my name. You want more qualifications? This is President Obama saying nice things about me. What more could you want?”

  18. - Flapdoodle - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 7:24 am:

It’s for races like this that I wish a “Yuch — None of the above” option was available.

  19. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 7:43 am:

Where is the deceit? PQ said that Obama said nice things about him in 2014. How is that not true?

Individuals can draw their own conclusions as to how persuasive a 4 year old compliment is - but I don’t see any deception here.

And I’m not even taking into account the hypocrisy of Raoul using a 35 year old statement of ridicule from Washington against PQ.

  20. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 7:51 am:

Does the current Quinn spot explicitly state that the Obama endorsement was for the 2014 guv race?

    If not, there’s the deceit.

  21. - Incognito - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 8:01 am:

If all the money Pritzker is spending downstate brings out more dem primary voters, Kwame is sunk.

  22. - Henry Francis - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 8:05 am:

==“President Obama stood up for me in 2014; he said I was a consumer advocate, a champion of working people.”==

Is this not what he said in the radio ad? Or is this what he said trying to explain the ad? Reading it again it appears that it was the latter - I had assumed that it was what the ad actually said. I can’t find anywhere what was actually said on the ad (and yes I’ve tried the Google).

Obama gave an hour-long speech about Quinn being a strong advocate for working people. Whether that is the precise wording of the part he excerpted, not sure.

And given that Raoul has used Obama’s picture and name extensively in his ads and on the stump, is it fair to mention that Obama wanted Will Burns, and not Raoul, to take his seat? Maybe, maybe not- you could argue both ways.

I don’t think any of this is relevant to who would be a better AG, and there can be points and counterpoints all day on who Obama likes better, and about who uses Obama’s name more.

And whether or not Quinn’s ad is deceptive, it’s on the exact same plane as saying you were picked to succeed Obama, without mentioning that Obama specifically wanted someone else for that job.

This is a total sideshow from who will defeat Erika Harold and more effectively challenge Trump, by the way.

  24. - Mouthy - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 9:28 am:

Put a fork in Pat. It’s his last race..

  25. - Sugar Corn - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 9:29 am:

Team Raoul seems pretty bent out of shape because they must not have a good recording of President Obama saluting their guy.

Quinn would be crazy NOT to remind voters that President Obama said some very kind words about him just a few years ago.

Good for Team Quinn to put this out there - surprised it wasn’t circulating earlier in the cycle.

  26. - JakeCP - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 9:44 am:

Quinn has a robocall going out to voters this morning. The message goes, ” Before you go to the polls, don’t forget what Barack Obama said about Pat Quinn…

Obama: “I know Pat Quinn. Over the years, I’ve seen firsthand his courage to take on powerful interests, his character to do what’s right…”

The voice then encourages people to vote Pat Quinn for Attorney General.

  27. - Duopoly - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 10:06 am:

Definition of Campaigning = “Willfully deceiving the electorate…”

  28. - Just Observing - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 10:07 am:

It’s a little hard to say how deceptive the ad is without hearing it or reading a transcript, but if it’s just Obama praising Quinn, I think it’s pretty fair game.

  29. - Just Observing - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 10:09 am:

And if Kwame’s spokesperson says this: “Old dog, same tricks. Pat Quinn’s willingness to blatantly deceive the public is one of the reasons Bruce Rauner was victorious in 2014. Despite what Pat Quinn may think, black voters won’t be bamboozled by him again.”

    1. I assume Kwame supported Quinn four years ago. The question to Kwame would be why if Quinn blatantly deceives the public; and

    2. If Quinn wins, will Kwame be supporting Erika Harold since Quinn is deceptive and a bamboozler?

  30. - Post My Loan - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 3:07 pm:

Sugar Corn - Quinn probably waited until today because there’s no time for Obama to debunk his claims on election day.

  31. - Sugar Corn - Tuesday, Mar 20, 18 @ 3:17 pm:

He didn’t wait until today. Quinn’s positive President Obama message has been airing for days.
