Senate overwhelmingly defies Pritzker on aviation maintenance tax break
Thursday, Nov 14, 2019 - Posted by Rich Miller * Gov. Pritzker has vowed to veto this bill, with a spokesperson saying “We’re not going to bail out a business that didn’t pay the taxes they were supposed to”…
Sen. Scott Bennett said during floor debate that the vast majority of the planes worked on in his district come from out of state and without the tax break the owners would go somewhere else. * Roll call… …Adding… From the Senate Democrats…
Pritzker really had no choice on this. He’s very wealthy and is known for using a fleet of private jets, so supporting this bill would’ve put him in an awkward political spot.

Seems like a win for Pritzker if he vetos this and they overturn the veto.
That being said I’m surprised that there isn’t a compromise here. Elliott Aviation didn’t slow down their hiring when they lost their property tax lawsuit even though they said they would move jobs out of state if they didn’t get their way.

How can this group of people not be aware that a tax exemption was expiring??? Don’t they have lobbyists???? I call liar liar pants on fire
- Quibbler - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 10:09 am:
Gross. I guess we’ll try to make up that $50 million in revenue on the backs of lonely senior citizens bused into casinos.

So if I don’t pay my taxes and come up with a lame excuse that politicians want to believe, I don’t have to pay them? Cool, cool. I’ll get right on that.

Chcagonk- you mentioned Elliott before I could. They have fought against paying any taxes for years. https://qconline.com/news/local/elliott-aviation-property-tax-exemption-rejected-by-illinois-supreme-court/article_e6267f43-6f9f-59d0-b810-ff2b780f0223.html

I say a lot of Rs on the list voting “yea”. So much for being the party of fiscal responsibility.

Maybe one day, Gov. “He Leads” will be able to persuade lawmakers to do something they don’t already want to do.

You’d think this topic would come up in their user group discussions, right? Makes me question their internal audit and accounting practices.

Wow, that’s a lot more dem votes than I would have guessed. I look forward to seeing the “Senator X voted to give $50 million of taxpayers money to wealthy private jet owners” attack ads next year. Or, if the fair tax passes, they’ll say “Senator X voted to raise your taxes, then turned around and gave $50 million of that money to rich private jet owners”. These ads kind of write themselves, though with trump on the ballot they probably won’t have much impact on incumbent dems.
- Huh? - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 10:34 am:
What’s the big deal, this is just a backdoor DCEO grant doled out to an industry instead of an individual company.
- anon2 - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 10:35 am:
So ignorance of the law IS an excuse after all.

“Pritzker really had no choice on this”
Sure he did, he could have moved the narrative from “Corporate Jet set” to preserving jobs for hard working airplane mechanics and helping small town airports across Illinois.

… and it’s good for my use of jets too.
Nah. It’s the right call. Can’t be for this.

@Willy -
The question is whether DCEO and Dept of Revenue opposes the bill in committee the first go-around, or whether this is just clean-up for show once again.
I still have no clue, but I am curious.
You would think a governor could muster more than one No vote, right?

Doesn’t that become moot, even if the veto is then overridden?
It’s the politics at play here, not the policy.

Let’s be honest about this too. Aviation is a boondoggle for the rich at small airports that do not provide passenger service. They cry of “economic development” even though there is no evidence that it helps and there are no passengers to service. If you want to look for savings in the state budget, that might be a place to start.
- Lucky Pierre - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 11:25 am:
Wow an overwhelming acknowledgment from the Illinois Senate that we have to compete with other states to grow our economy and create and retain jobs in the private sector.
Aviation is certainly not a boondoggle for the middle class workers it employs
Don’t stop now keep it going
- Seeking Context - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 12:05 pm:
What happens now, though? Assuming this gets to the Governor’s desk, what’s the timeline on this time for him to assumedly veto it and allow the GA to override?
- Kane County Frank - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 12:57 pm:
Pritzker had no choice on this? Give me a break, of course he does. Don’t waste taxpayers’ time, please.
- ChicagoVinny - Thursday, Nov 14, 19 @ 1:22 pm:
Impossible to know a hypothetical, but I wonder how many of these senators would be onboard for tax amnesty if this was a $50m hit on average working people rather than a luxury business for the wealthy?

There is an Association of Airport managers. How could this sunset not be on their leadership’s agenda. They had to know.
