Question of the day

Wednesday, Mar 15, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller

* From the Pontiac Daily Leader

Shell Gas Station employee Jenny Hamilton was up at 4 a.m. to help a handful of employees as the gas station in Pontiac prepared to welcome in its first customers in almost nine months.

The Shell Gas Station at 1910 W. Reynolds St. may not have been the most devastated of the nine businesses impacted by a tornado that touched down in Pontiac on June 23, but it served as a backdrop for the news media, who met at the location to hold press conferences with local authorities and Gov. Bruce Rauner.

I have only one superstition. Whenever I drive I-55 to Chicago and back, I always stop in Pontiac to fill up my gas tank. It’s pretty close to the half-way mark, but my mom was born there and my maternal grandparents are buried there.

I’ve been doing this for decades. And the only time I ever remember not stopping in Pontiac, I got into a car accident.

* The Question: What are your superstitions, if any?

Rich, when driving to and from Springfield I had the EXACT same superstition. I always insisted on stopping here.

  2. - LizPhairTax - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:03 pm:

Not a superstition but…Pfaff’s in downtown Pontiac is a solid bakery and worth the side trip.

  3. - Honeybear - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:03 pm:

I touch the outside hull of an airplane to bless it as I board. I don’t like flying.

  4. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:06 pm:

When you believe in things that you don’t understand, then you suffer. Superstition ain’t the way.

  5. - Ducky LaMoore - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:07 pm:

Every time I open a beer, I drink it.

  6. - Saluki - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:09 pm:

I pull the trigger on a gun with my middle finger. I was so young when my dad taught me to shoot, that was the only finger that would reach the trigger.

  7. - Belle - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:11 pm:

Whenever I get into a car, I wear a specific silver ring. The one time I didn’t, we got into an accident.

  8. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:12 pm:

If I don’t read Capitol Fax each session day, I feel a step behind all day.

Send you $5 to CSI at your convenience.

  9. - Leslie K - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:13 pm:

At work, never say “it’s been pretty quiet today.” That’s when everything goes crazy.

  10. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:18 pm:

I never say things like “haven’t been sick yet”, “never happened to me”… “That’ll never happen”

If someone says that and I’m around I “knock wood” and I tell them to knock wood.

    Karma.

  11. - FormerParatrooper - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:25 pm:

I never take the bag tag of my baggage until my next flight. The last time I took the tag off early I was stuck at Miami International until 9am, for a flight that was supposed to leave a noon the day before.

  12. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:26 pm:

I don’t eat after breakfast on performance days, so nothing but water touches my vocal folds.

  13. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:32 pm:

I didn’t vote for Rauner because I had this weird feeling that a filthy rich vulture capitalist might wreck the state.

  14. - Blue Bayou - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:32 pm:

Anon at 2:32 is me. Damn computer machine.

  15. - Porgy Tirebiter - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:39 pm:

When somebody says they have a balanced budget but they don’t show it to me. I get worried they are full of BS

  16. - jw - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:40 pm:

in my home town I stay as far away from Fair street as possible. Was engaged to one girl and ended up getting married to 2 others. All 3 lived on the same block.

  17. - Earnest - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:45 pm:

When the sun is low and shines through one window of my car and out another, I always have to waive my hand to make a shadow on the ground. However, this may fall more under OCD than superstition.

  18. - Annonin' - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:51 pm:

We believe everthin’ we read in CapFax because as soon as we doubted one BigBrain/$uper$tar item it quickly too much time to sort stuff out.

  19. - Springfieldish - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:54 pm:

Perhaps a tradition rather than a superstition, but coming up I-57, we always have to stop in Manteno whether we need to or not and get Monicals whether we’re hungry or not. The one time we skipped it years ago we got stuck in traffic for 3 hours on 294. We’ve been stuck after that, but stuck, with pizza!

  20. - LisleMike - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 2:55 pm:

I wear black underwear if I am to address any gathering. Spoke on behalf of Rubio in Iowa caucuses last year and had such good responses that I’ve done it since. Silly, but works for me!

  21. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:08 pm:

I’ve not read/heard anyone say it (and I’m not shilling for the Governor), but I think it’s fair to say the Gov is open to a tax increase to pay current and past due bills, but also leery of it as well since the legislative majority can’t be trusted not to try and rack up new bills the way someone underwater on their credit cards does when they get approved for yet another new card.

  22. - Nick Name - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:15 pm:

I don’t look into mirrors after dark.

  23. - 32nd Ward Roscoe Village - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:15 pm:

I say at least two Hail Marys in Latin to myself before every plane take off and landing.

  24. - Spiro Agnew - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:17 pm:

Not a superstition, but whenever driving north from the Metro East, I have to stop in Litchfield for gas/snacks.

  25. - Chicago_Downstater - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:29 pm:

Any time a Cubs game gets close & there’s a chance to either get some cushion, retake the lead, or tie it up I swipe the brim of my baseball hat three times from right to left with my right hand.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but I always do it.

  26. - Last Bull Moose - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 3:47 pm:

When I have an important meeting, I like to wear my team football ring. It is my personal ring of power.

  27. - Just Me - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 4:24 pm:

Read Capital Fax on any session day when I have my breakfast at the Hilton, so if the “fax” is late that day I go hungry and am late.

  28. - Dome Gnome - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 5:21 pm:

Superstitions are why we can’t have nice things.

  29. - Stones - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 5:51 pm:

My superstition is the same as Honeybear’s - I always tap the hull of an airplane as I am boarding. Flying makes me very nervous.

  30. - weltschmerz - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 5:59 pm:

Nothing to do with slowing down for the nearby ISP station, eh?

  31. - Original Rambler - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 6:37 pm:

I stop at the Coal City Shell which, coincidentally, was damaged in the Diamond tornado several years ago.

  32. - walker - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 7:11 pm:

Always stopped at Coal City because my grandfather was a miner.

  33. - Arthur Andersen - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 7:16 pm:

I always touch the roof of my car before a road trip.

I slow down with out fail at the mile marker on I-72 East where a deer/Corvette incursion almost took me out.

  34. - TinyDancer(FKASue) - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 8:47 pm:

Must always put my watch on in the morning.
The one time I went to work and forgot my watch was September 11, 2001.
    That’s it. No other superstitions.

  35. - striketoo - Wednesday, Mar 15, 17 @ 9:22 pm:

Now I know why there are so many dents near airplane entrance doors.
