Question of the day

Wednesday, Oct 10, 2018 - Posted by Rich Miller

* The gubernatorial candidates were asked yesterday what TV show they never miss. JB Pritzker’s answer

I don’t know if any of you are on Netflix, but I love the show “Atypical.” It’s a relatively newer show, and something that I don’t miss.

Gov. Rauner’s answer

Far and away, my favorite time— I have to say, as governor I’ve watched virtually no television. Back before being governor, I would love the classics, like for example I would always like to see “The Dick Van Dyke Show” or some other classic, family shows the 60s. I love that stuff, it’s kinda teary-eyed to me, and it’s a great way to relax.

* The Question: What TV show do you never miss? Explain.

MeTV runs the original Star Trek series every night at 7pm. I hooked my eight-year-old son on it and we never miss it.

    Live long and prosper baby.

  2. - Anon E Moose - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:01 pm:

Rauner talks like Mitt Romney. I love hot dog. Trees are the right height. I love family shows.

  3. - Perrid - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

Doctor Who. The new season just started. It’s always great fun, and the sci-fi stuff is usually interesting and really makes me think, especially when they mess with the timeline.

  4. - L.A. - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:05 pm:

    Life Below Zero

  5. - namesnick - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:07 pm:

Better Call Saul - was a big fan of Breaking Bad, although caught it after it was on tv and plowed through the series in a few weeks.

Great writing and acting in both.

  6. - I Miss Bentohs - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:07 pm:

I like the Big Bang Theory as it is good escape TV

Also, the gov was starting with my favorite time and he stopped himself … and I am sure he would say Modern Family as he really likes that show. I wish he would not do those things and just answer. Oh well.

  7. - Grandson of Man - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:08 pm:

The closest to can’t miss are Real Time with Bill Maher and SpongeBob SquarePants. SpongeBob has adult writing/themes and reminds me of 60’s cartoons and sometimes of Lucille Ball. I love the voices/characters. One of my favorite episodes is Patrick Smartpants.

  8. - stlboy - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:09 pm:

I just binge watched every episode of the West Wing on Netflix and wondered what an Illinois version would look like.

  9. - Mama - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:09 pm:

Life in Pieces is a fun show. Lots of laughs. I tape it so I won’t miss it.

  10. - Biker - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:09 pm:

    Bojack Horseman is amazin’

  11. - Tom B. - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:09 pm:

    I’m with namesnick.

Better Call Saul is a great show.

  12. - Wensicia - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:12 pm:

Star Trek and Jeopardy. Other favorites have disappeared from the screen.

  13. - Double Standard - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:15 pm:

Will always watch episodes from the first three seasons of M*A*S*H whenever on.

  14. - peteypablo - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:15 pm:

Peaky Blinders and always like watching reruns of the Newsroom. or anything that Aaron Zorkin has his hands on. You can’t beat that writing.

  15. - LizPhairTax - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:21 pm:

I don’t know if any of you are on cable, but I love the show Sportscenter. Its a relatively newer show and something I don’t miss.

  16. - Soothsayer - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:21 pm:

@Peteypablo Sorkin has rewritten an adaptation of To Kill A Mockingbird for Broadway starring Jeff Bridges. Southwest is super cheap to NYC in January…

  17. - Southfarmllama - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:22 pm:

    Rauner is just… terrible.

  18. - lakeside - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:26 pm:

Jane the Virgin. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Even if it doesn’t sound like something you’d be into.

  19. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:26 pm:

That show that no one watches and gets no attention… Game of Thrones.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:26 pm:

I’ve been binging quite a bit, so can’t miss TV…

I’d say… “Will and Grace”…. because it’s is truly frivolous, there is nothing to take from it, its over the top, and well written.

    It’s like it never left.

  21. - Archpundit - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:27 pm:

Better Call Saul, The Deuce–David Simon is amazing, and then The Man in the High Castle.

Dick Van Dyke Show? I mean, a funny show and groundbreaking, but there that’s a bit too on the nose for a guy that out of touch.

  22. - The Most Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:29 pm:

These answers are cute. JB says, “…if any of you are on Netflix…” and Rauner takes us back 50 years to a time when men and women slept in separate beds. I’m a fan of The Affair.

  23. - Earnest - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:29 pm:

I’ve cut the cord and only go after completed seasons or series. I’m currently re-watching the Australian “Please Like Me.” If you read a general description of the show, it would say it stars a talented young comedian as a character who realizes he’s gay. To me it is the most stunning portrayal of what it’s like to have a parent with mental illness. Spoilers: the show begins with the mother’s suicide attempt and the full second season takes place while she’s having a psychiatric hospitalization. Again, to most it is a well-done comedy.

  24. - LilLebowskiUrbanAchiever - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

Wow, how out of touch can our elected officials be. Bruce Rauner watches Dick Van Dyke? I mean, seriously?

For me, the only most watch shows right now are John Oliver and Atlanta on FX. Donald Glover is a genius. (Watch this clip and enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KxZu1Fs_7s)

  25. - ItsMillerTime - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

Game of Thrones, though it helps to keep on track when it seems like the entire country is also viewing it.

  26. - Dance Band on the Titanic - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:35 pm:

    House of Cards.

The Underwoods were the ultimate power couple and the political intrigue made each episode fascinating to watch. Curious to see if Robin Wright can carry the final season alone.

  27. - Archpundit - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:36 pm:

I forgot the other favorite that is more my relaxation show–Supergirl. It hasn’t fallen into the redundancy of some of the other DC shows and it’s a lot of fun–though Black Lightning is promising.

  28. - Jibba - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:36 pm:

The Good Place. Smart, funny, able to deal with existentialism and moral philosophy in a comedy.

  29. - Honeybadger - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:38 pm:

The Office. Watching it in reruns and still can’t stop laughing.

  30. - Peoples Republic of Oak Park - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:40 pm:

    American Horror Story

  31. - Christopher - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:43 pm:

The one that I’ve added most recently is “Undercover Boss”on MSNBC, I think. Not only is it interesting going “behind the scenes” at different businesses (typically nationally-known chains) but hearing stories and hardships of the average workers and then seeing them get rewarded for their good work and dedication by the boss is touching.

  32. - Freezeup - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:45 pm:

Currently it’s Yellowstone. (For the uninitiated it is definitely not about waterfalls and geysers.)

Usually this question does not apply as I’d rather wait until an entire season of a show is available and binge it.

  33. - FormerParatrooper - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:49 pm:

Forged in Iron is a show I watch. Always wanted to do blacksmithing since metal shop where we learned the basics in high school.

  34. - Chicago 20 - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:49 pm:

Obviously Rauner is too busy acting like an completely inept Governor in “Dad’s Home State” to watch any other TV show.

  35. - 47th Ward - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 4:54 pm:

I DVR all of the Cubs games during the summer and binge watch them all winter. The 2016 season was great, but the show kind of went stale in 2017.

I can’t wait to find out what happens in 2018 after they added some new characters like Yu Darvish and Tyler Chatwood. Theo’s writing and Maddon’s directing are solid, as is the narration by Len Kasper. I’m pretty sure they’re going to win it all again, in spectacular fashion, just like a Hollywood story.

The hard part is avoiding any kind of news or conversation about the Cubs for seven months. But trust me, it’ll be worth it this time.

  36. - Worth It - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:00 pm:

So basically neither one of them has had to watch the 10 million commercials that they have subjected Illinois Citizens to for the past 18 months?

  37. - City Zen - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:00 pm:

Another vote for Better Call Saul.

  38. - 32nd Ward Roscoe Village - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:03 pm:

Endeavour which is the prequel to Inspector Morse
    The Crown is fabulous
    Game of Thrones

  39. - flea - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:05 pm:

Antiques road show is my fave. Should send Abe’s hat(?) and Rauner to see what you can get

  40. - Contract Disputin' - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:10 pm:

Bosch. New Jack Ryan series. Wish Haters Back Off had been renewed.

  41. - Cheryl44 - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:10 pm:

    Chicago Tonight.

Okay, I’ve been binge watching “The Good Place.”

  42. - PublicServant - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:21 pm:

Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, FTWD

  43. - Three Dimensional Checkers - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:22 pm:

Babylon Berlin is a really great Netflix fund. You gotta watch it in German with the subtitles, but it is well worth the effort. I’m sure many reader here would love it.

  44. - Fixer - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:31 pm:

Game of Thrones and older show wise, love some Firefly, as short of a run as it was.

  45. - Suburban Mom - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:32 pm:

The Good Place, aka catnip for philosophy nerds

Atypical is good, though; as a mother with an autistic child I’ve been very interested in it. If you haven’t seen it you should check it out.

  46. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:34 pm:

    - Chicago 20 -

When we all sit in for production meetings at HBO… they tell us, “Bruce” too, they can’t believe his antics in episodes.

If we didn’t have the footage, HBO woulda canceled us a long time ago.

  47. - Anon - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 5:50 pm:

Rauner - “my favorite old classics is ‘leave it to BVR.” That’s what I keep tellin’ the voters.

  48. - Amalia - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 6:11 pm:

when it was running, it was Killing Eve. fantastic spy/dark comedy with so many women involved. Now, it’s the new Murphy Brown, because Murphy. and, behind on the good place so that can’t count, but Blackish has not started yet so I will be on time and all over that. so many reasons why, but Laurence Fishburne as Pops is a big one. can it get any better than seeing the guy who played Cowboy Curtis in Pee Wee’s Playhouse and Morpheus in The Matrix as the TV grandpa in a most timely and hilarious show? No it cannot.

  49. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 6:23 pm:

60 minutes. Some of the best TV journalism around.

  50. - Southside Markie - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 6:32 pm:

    47th Ward: Doubled over laughing.

To the question: The Americans and Brockmire.

  51. - Concerned Observer - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 6:38 pm:

The Good Place, as others have mentioned. It’s the best show on television.

  52. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 6:41 pm:

    Nobody watches The Vice?

  53. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 7:05 pm:

    Meant The Voice.

  54. - Gooner - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 7:16 pm:

Sounds like I’m the only one who never misses Survivor.

Beyond that, the only other thing I make a point of watching is Arsenal matches.

  55. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 7:20 pm:

Ozark on Netflix is great and Real Time on HBO because Bill Maher is one of the few voices that’s willing to call out the left and the right.

  56. - Keyrock - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 7:27 pm:

Another vote for Doctor Who . . . And Dad’s Home State.

  57. - West Sider - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 8:23 pm:

Babylon Berlin is extraordinary. Also anything with Anthony Bourdain-his 2017 shows just dropped on Netflix. On Amazon, The Marvelous Mrs MaIsel- was marvelous (though the potty mouth was way too much).

  58. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 8:58 pm:

We really like The Good Place, Brooklyn 99, Bob’s Burgers and Mom.

    – MrJM

  59. - Stoney - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 9:14 pm:

Live Pd. I watch it for an hour or so and wonder why anyone would want a job in law enforcement.

  60. - Tweed - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 9:15 pm:

Another vote for Better Call Saul

  61. - Bourbon Street - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 10:32 pm:

Bosch. I’ve read all the books and never thought that any actor could bring Bosch to life, but Titus Welliver proved that thought wrong. Another vote for Better Call Saul. Phenomenal acting and plots.

  62. - Sunday - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 10:53 pm:

    Masterpiece Theater - all good.

  63. - M Python - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 11:31 pm:

Dr. Who. A true fantasy. Not the fantasy that J B is trying to foist on us

  64. - Nick Name - Wednesday, Oct 10, 18 @ 11:46 pm:

    Stranger Things, on Netflix.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

  65. - Just saying - Thursday, Oct 11, 18 @ 5:44 am:

Figured the gov would say the Scrooge is his favorite

  66. - VanillaMan - Thursday, Oct 11, 18 @ 8:06 am:

There are over 100 years of films to discover and thanks to modern technologies, I can view them. That leaves me with little room to discover television shows I need to see.

I’ve been bing watching B/W television, when I get a chance, and it has been incredible. Thanks to modern technologies, I’ve discovered excellent 1950s television. Many include commercials as well. Watching contemporary historical record has been fantastic.

  67. - Tony Kendall - Thursday, Oct 11, 18 @ 8:36 am:

I have really enjoyed binging the Netflix show “Big Mouth,” with Nick Kroll, John Mulaney, Jordan Peele, and Jenny Slate.

  68. - Exit 59 - Thursday, Oct 11, 18 @ 9:48 am:

47th Ward… I spit a little coffee on my papers this morning… Well done.
