Carol Marin to retire after election

Monday, Sep 14, 2020 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I do not possess the talent to come up with superlatives for Carol Marin which are not already mentioned in this Robert Feder story. Gold standard. A beacon. The winner of every major award in broadcast journalism. A true legend. And she has always taken the time to talk with other reporters. The hole this leaves cannot be filled

Carol Marin, one of Chicago’s most honored and respected journalists of all time, is bringing down the curtain on her legendary TV news career after 48 years.

Marin, 71, surprised colleagues today by announcing that she will step down as political editor at NBC-owned WMAQ-Channel 5 and correspondent for “Chicago Tonight” at Window to the World Communications WTTW-Channel 11 after she covers the presidential election November 3.

“It’s time to get off the stage,” she told me. “Everybody needs to know the time for the last performance. I’ve had a great run, but I want to walk off the news stage when I feel great about it still, when I’ve got great relationships still, and when I feel the work is solid. I always wanted to be the one to decide the time, and I’m grateful to be able to do that. […]

Marin said she will continue to serve as co-director of the Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence at DePaul University, which she co-founded in 2016. Don Moseley, co-director of the center and Marin’s longtime producer and reporting collaborator, also will be leaving as an investigative producer at NBC 5.

Since joining the DePaul faculty in 2003, Marin and Moseley have mentored hundreds of young journalists.

she married into the family of a friend, so I’ve heard about her smarts from the start. did not know she was originally a South Sider. did not think I could love her more. huge loss for the news community.

She’s emphatic that she’s not retiring, just moving on to the next chapter in her career. At 71, she’s earned it.

Beyond the news –wonderful, kind person.

  6. - Chatham Resident - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 10:23 am:

Marin, along with Ron Magers, was one of the anchors who resigned in 1997 in protest of Jerry Springer’s short-lived hiring by WMAQ. She moved to CBS and WBBM for seven years, until returning to Channel 5 in 2004. Magers moved to WLS until retiring in 2016.

Best of wishes on the next and closing chapter. Very good journalist and we will miss her.

  8. - SAP - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 10:57 am:

Retiring after the election or after the election results are determined? That could be a difference of several weeks.

Seriously though, Carol Marin is one of the best in the biz and will be missed. Congrats on a great career and best wishes for (semi) retirement.

I dealt with her a few times over the years, she is one of the good ones.

  10. - JoanP - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 11:03 am:

I have long been a fan of hers. I wish her all the best.

Honing a trade, that is a virtue.

How you treat that virtue in your professional life is how others will measure your craft and your dedication and professionalism towards your trade

A trade is never a bad word or belief. Quite the contrary, the virtuosity towards honing a craft, your trade, to be the best, nothing is more virtuous. Now add the accolades, the satisfaction of doing your trade at elite levels, instead of finding the benchmarks of achievement, you personally become the benchmark who also work in your trade and see you as heights they aspire.

    That’s Carol Marin.

Marin is the epitome of a reporter, journalist, storyteller, who’s career, work product, the dedication to her trade and the virtuosity towards all those ends, Marin is and will always be that beacon, that benchmark for those striving for greatness… in a trade… where your word, the honesty to the story and the facts, and holding accountable those at times cower in shadows.

My sincere best wishes to Carol Marin and to the new chapters she will write as Marin closes the book on a career unmatched, but will be one many Marin has inspired will strive to emulate.

    That’s a legacy. Marin’s legacy is secured.

Marin is the goods. Like Chatham Resident, I remember her with Ron Magers. They were the best team around at the time, as good or even better than national network news. High integrity, buty they had a sense of humor that came out too.

  13. - Leslie K - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 11:39 am:

Marin is a class act and true professional. She’s earned her retirement, but she and Moseley will definitely be missed.

  14. - Wensicia - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 11:54 am:

Marin is probably the most respected TV news reporter in Chicago, her integrity paramount and she demanded no less from her colleagues. She’ll be missed.

  15. - anon - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 2:47 pm:

Well, I couldn’t help but notice she had a stock interview question of always asking about whether a political conflict was personal in a tone as if it was some big revelation or gotcha. Got kind of tedious for me but obviously others thought it was insightful journalism.

  16. - Kevin Fanning - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 3:47 pm:

Congrats Carol! One of my favorite memories from Springfield was having dinner with you and Rich and hearing about the matching tattoos that you and your son had gotten. Best of luck on your next chapter, you’re irreplaceable.

  17. - Huh? - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 4:00 pm:

She’s still working? Haven’t seen Chicago news in years. Lost track.

  18. - Rich Hill - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 4:27 pm:

Chicago and Illinois are fortunate to have hosted most of her career.

  19. - BeaverBrook - Monday, Sep 14, 20 @ 5:31 pm:

My friend Dick Johnson informed years ago that Carol was one of the best in the news business. I hope that my son may take a class from her someday at DePaul. Her legacy lives on in her students.

  20. - Suburban Mom - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 12:11 am:

Carol Marin goes to my parish and this makes me sad.

  21. - Mike Small - Tuesday, Sep 15, 20 @ 9:51 am:

I met Carol at the Newberry Library as a semi retired History Teacher and I was surprised that someone of her stature was willing to spend so much time with me, but she has always had a stellar reputation of treating everyone with respect.I don’t know of anyone in her field who is more admired.I am sure her voice will continue to be heard.
