*** UPDATED x3 - Madigan to back Tabares’ candidate - Kodatt has resigned *** Madigan, Quinn say they’ve “suggested” to new Rep. Kodatt that he resign

Wednesday, Feb 24, 2021 - Posted by Rich Miller

[Bumped up to Wednesday from Tuesday night for visibility.]

* I’ve been working on a story about newly appointed state Rep. Ed Kodatt (D-Chicago) since yesterday. This is from 13th Ward Democratic Committeeman Michael Madigan and 13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn…

“After learning of alleged questionable conduct by Mr. Kodatt, it was suggested that he resign as state representative for the 22nd District. We are committed to a zero tolerance policy in the workplace.”

There’s some question about whether a resignation was properly filed today.

Anyway, the guy replaced the longest-serving House Speaker in history for what may be the briefest period in history.

*** UPDATE 1 *** The House’s website now lists Kodatt as having resigned.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Madigan says he will back Angelica Guerrero Cuellar this time around. She was supported by Ald. Silvana Tabares last Sunday. Ald. Tabares, you will recall, refused to make the appointment vote unanimous…

13th Ward Committeeman Michael J. Madigan issued the following statement on the process to select the next representative of the 22nd Illinois House District:

“After a fair and robust process on Sunday, we are prepared to proceed with selecting a replacement for the 22nd District Illinois House seat from the pool of candidates who already presented to the selection committee. I believe the most equitable way to proceed is to nominate the candidate who received the second-highest vote count. It is my intention to nominate Angelica Guerrero Cuellar.”

WHO:
Committee members
Michael J. Madigan (13)
Rep. Aaron Ortiz (14)
Ald. Derrick G. Curtis (18)
Ald. Silvana Tabares (23)
Vince Cainkar (Stickney)

WHERE:
Balzekas Museum ballroom
6500 S. Pulaski Rd.
2nd Fl.
Chicago, IL 60629

WHEN:
Thursday, Feb. 25
10 a.m.
Doors will open at 9:30 a.m.

Due to COVID restrictions set by the Centers for Disease Control and the Illinois Department of Public Health, in-person seating will be limited.

*** UPDATE 3 *** Food for thought…

Do you get any perks for being a state rep for a week? Like the license plate or something?

Back in the Tier 1 days, there might have been a substantial pension boost. But I think those days are gone.

Looks like Ald. Tabares knew this Koldatt guy had problems. Maybe that’s why she didn’t vote to make it unanimous.

Gee whiz, and after such an open and transparent process to earn the appointment, this happens. No one could have predicted such a thing. This shouldn’t be seen as an indictment of the traditional back room deal making, just a one off “oops” event. I trust them to get it right next time.

That’s all this upside down session needs is more drama. If the kid holds out, expulsion proceedings would further add to the chaos.

For Madigan going to the next vote to pick a replacement will be like going to a potluck after you gave everyone food poisoning from your potato salad the last time, and you bring potato salad again.

What was the rush with Madigan’s resignation and the hastily poor selection by Quinn of this guy? They should have taken a little time to do everything properly.

=== Bruce Rauner smiled and drank some chianti upn hearing this news.===

Bruce Rauner who was humiliated, had JB Pritzker, his family and their trusts bail out *Bruce’s wife’s social service*, who spent tens of millions of dollars to he, himself, having no constituency… as Bruce then *moved* to Florida… away from his sad term and the state that rejected him?

    That Bruce Rauner?

  44. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 7:56 am:

That’s the problem with appointing no names in back room deals these days. One the no name goes public you might find out things you didn’t know before.

  45. - Oswego Willy - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 8:04 am:

    To the post,

    Things still in flux;

Who knew what, and when did they know it.

What exactly is this new information, why wasn’t it vetted.

If it’s as bad that he has to resign, and I’m not downplaying it or trivializing it, no one thought to ask the questions to find something.

    Things I know;

I know that the more vague this is the worse it will become to the speculation, and the speculation only.

  46. - Essential State Employee - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 8:11 am:

Hopefully Kodatt won’t get a GA pension for two days of service.

  47. - OneMan - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 8:14 am:

    == That Bruce Rauner? ==

Yes, that Bruce Rauner. In large part because things went bad for him over time and now gets to watch the guy who he considered the roadblock to everything he wanted to do have everything go downhill all at once.

In the scheme of things, I think you would have a hard time thinking of an Illinois political leader who has had a worse month than Madigan without being charged with a crime.

I suspect your favorite golfer is even having a chuckle over how this has all gone down.

  48. - Essential State Employee - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 8:19 am:

=This is from 13th Ward Democratic Committeeman Michael Madigan and 13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn…=

I wonder if Pat Quinn will also weigh in on Kodatt’s resignation?

=== In large part because things went bad for him over time and now gets to watch the guy who he considered the roadblock to everything he wanted to do have everything go downhill all at once.===

Tough to take serious what Rauner thinks to this as Rauner feels he helped take Madigan out… two years after he (Rauner) lost… and it was the 19 who did it, not influenced at all by “Bruce”

As this debacle plays out, and we learn more, and it won’t be gleeful information that will be learned, Rauner still is tens of millions lighter, the humiliation is still there, the man moved, it’s an odd way to feel “satisfaction” I guess?

  50. - Just Me 2 - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 9:33 am:

This is reason #1,593,204 why we should reform the corrupt appointment process. Politicians love to resign so they can participate in the anointing process. Voters are just an annoyance. This guy’s problems would have come out had the process been better. It’s gross. Only in Illinois.

  51. - @misterjayem - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 9:53 am:

“Does MJM still have the 58% vote to decide the new Rep? Or has that changed as well?”

Madigan has resigned as speaker and rep.

Madigan has not resigned as the 13th Ward Democratic committeeman and still holds 56% of the weighted vote cast in the 22nd House District.

Madigan has also retained his spot as one of two Democratic State Central Committee members from the 3rd Congressional District.

    – MrJM

Nice work Mike. Continues to be non- credible on this subject matter. One would think he is pushing 80 and out of touch on this issue . . . . . . . . . .oh . . . . . . .

  55. - Rod - Wednesday, Feb 24, 21 @ 10:09 am:

I do not want to get into a battle with OW over Diana Rauner’s early childhood agency once called the Ounce of Prevention, now called Early Start, but the 2020 fisical report for the group has not been released as yet, the 2019 report clearly indicated the group was still on a reasonably sound financial footing. OW stated above “Bruce Rauner who was humiliated, had JB Pritzker, his family and their trusts bail out *Bruce’s wife’s social service…*” in response to a comment about Rauner. I did read the report Rich did a while back on what was then still called the Ounce of Prevention Fund Rich never claimed the group in any way was problematic. Even Crain’s which has reported on Early Start’s issues on the flow of state funding, something experienced by other not for profit service agencies did not indicate it was close to collapse.

To this day extremely responsible donors are giving money to what is now called Early Start, by that I mean major funders like Buffett Early Childhood Fund, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and indeed the Pritzker Children’s Initiative, which the Governor does not control the giving. All these major contributors look carefully at the audited financials of the not for profits they donate too. About 40% of the budget of Early Start comes from private donors, the rest from the State and Federal government. Given OW’s comment I will look carefully in June when the 2020 financials for Early Start are released and if OW is correct that it can reasonably be demonstrated that the Pritzker Children’s Initiative or other trusts controlled by the Pritzker family bailed out a failing agency run by Diana Rauner I will be more than happy to verify OW’s statement. I am sure OW will check all of that out come June to verify his own claims of this issue.

Wowzers! Former Rep. Kodatt….does he get a ‘retired’ license plate: OPPS 13th

    - Rod -

    (Sigh)

How many times did The Ounce of Prevention sue the Rauner Administration for monies owed?

Here’s when the coalition sued, for the second time.

    https://news.wttw.com/2017/02/09/second-time-first-lady-s-nonprofit-sues-governor

If the Rauner Administration was refusing The Ounce of Prevention and all other social services the funds they are owed…

… you don’t think the $5 million as helpful when the state refused to even pay what was owed groups like The Ounce of Prevention?
