That would apply to race participants who were walking, crawling, limping, and dead.

  2. - Stones - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:36 am:

For the most part I can’t disagree except for the fact that she has never seen me run.

  3. - Dave Fako - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:40 am:

Rep. Sullivan should understand that Palos Heights is a Republican area, with a conservative tilt, that happens to be represented by various Democrats. It has moved less GOP and more Dem over the years, but it in no way can be termed “Dem Country.” I was raised in the town and have run dozens of campaigns in Palos Heights and / or in Districts that encompassed all or part of the Town.

  4. - Hit or Miss - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:44 am:

We hold these truths to be self-evident.

  5. - Dee Lay - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:49 am:

I laughed pretty hard at this one during the race. She was like a mile or so into the race and set the bar pretty high for all the other sign holders.

The Palos Half Marathon is woefully underrated as well.

  6. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:50 am:

The “Eternal Victim Society; Illinois Government” 2nd VP wastes time complaining. When asked how to fix things, she responded, “Do you like my sign?”

    Dope.

  7. - Louis G. Atsaves - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:51 am:

Thanks to gerrymandering, a Republican area is now represented by various Democrats? Who would have guessed?

  8. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:52 am:

Raunerite excited about Raunerbot signs and slogans.

  9. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:52 am:

“Arizona Bob paid me $10 to hold this sign. He used to live here!”

  10. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:54 am:

@DriveByDopiness - someone took a picture of my sign. I smiled because I was sure the black helicopters and the NSA Satellites were watching. #IngoranceIsDopiness

  11. - Walker - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:55 am:

Widely held belief. That’s all that counts at the polls, if they come out.

Admiration for Ed running in it.

  12. - Dave Fako - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:55 am:

Louis, you should also note that Palos Heights was represented by Democratic State House member (s) Terry Steczo & Maggie Crotty with a brief interlude of GOP Rep Jack O’Connor from ‘95-’97 and a Democratic Congressman (Bill Lipinski) back in the 1990’s under a Republican drawn map.

  13. - Walker - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:56 am:

    “Happy days are here again.”

  14. - Southwest Cook - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 9:59 am:

Dave is correct - Palos Heights is heavily Republican (much more so than Mundelein nowadays), but is drawn into gerrymandered districts with the South side of Chicago.

  15. - Rick W. - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:01 am:

Adding to @Dave Fako’s comment…I ran that half marathon yesterday too and saw that woman standing at the end of a long driveway from a million dollar home on a wooded lot. Doubt she’s a Dem. All the same, she wins the award for best sign on the race route.

  16. - A guy... - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:02 am:

    That feeling is out there.

  17. - The Captain - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:04 am:

    Palos township:

    12 Romney - 52%
    10 Kirk - 57%
    10 Brady -53%
    10 Topinka - 67%
    10 Rutherford - 61%

This is not Dem country. Outlaw country perhaps.

  18. - Southwest Cook - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:04 am:

Dave, then you should remember that Patrick O’Malley was its GOP state senator from ‘93-’03.

  19. - wordslinger - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:10 am:

The fact that a GOP leader would concede Palos Heights as “Dem Country” is revealing.

They’ve been playing defense so long, they don’t see opportunities for offense. If you can’t flip the folks who voted for Reagan and Lipinski, you’ve got trouble.

  20. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:14 am:

===…Democratic Congressman (Bill Lipinski) back in the 1990’s under a Republican drawn map.===

That Lipinski. Such a liberal. Probably as far Left as possible.

Again, it’s like being a Victim doesn’t allow people to see that candidates that “represent” their district best, will win, irregardless of party affiliation.

Fox News will tell ya different…but that doesn’t make it true.

  21. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:25 am:

She doesn’t deserve the name calling, OW. She is entitled to her opinion. An awful lot of Illinoisans agree with her. Don’t make her into something she is not.

She is showing better humor than you.

  22. - Ahoy! - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:26 am:

    She speaks truth to power.

  23. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:26 am:

And I bet she is a hell of a lot cuter than you too.

  24. - Empty Suit - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:28 am:

Noticeably this was a ’still photo’.

  25. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:41 am:

    - VanillaMan -,

As I am intitled to mine.

You know what I look like, like a Sno Cone.

According to you, looks matter, the argument doesn’t?

    Got it!

    “Caption?”

“I would have had more talking points on here, but keeping one thought long enough to write it down is ‘weelly ard’ for cutesy people!”

  26. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:43 am:

VM, if “cuteness” was a criterion for blog commenters, many of us would have been voted off the island a long time ago. Besides, isn’t your comment a bit sexist?

  27. - Upon Further Review - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:51 am:

I attended a fundraising event for disabled veterans who are preparing to participate in wheelchair Olympic games. I wish I had such a sign on hand.

  28. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:51 am:

She is cute, she is funny and she isn’t making a statement blatantly original or controversial. She is smiling and having a good time. She is probably cheering everyone as they ran, walked or limped by.

She is underserving of the mean comments and insults.

I am not being sexist - I am being chivalrous.

I would do the same even if I disagreed with her.

  29. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:55 am:

Cuteness is a factor in life. My cuteness has always been a huge limiting factor in my life. Most people are unable to see beyond my physical attributes and respect my arguments as a result. Really ugly people hate me on sight.

Ask Rob Lowe how hard it is to get ahead with faces like ours.

  30. - TooManyJens - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:55 am:

I saw one of those at the Illinois Marathon in C-U, too.

  31. - Dave Fako - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 10:56 am:

FYI - Palos Heights is composed roughly half of precincts in Palos (west of Harlem) and Worth Townships (east of Harlem). But my point stands that this is not Dem Country, even though a lot of south side Democrats have moved to it over the last 20+ years.

I fully remember Pat O’Malley - he defeated John McNamara in 1992. I was on the Steczo race that same year.

My point is that a GOP Rep couldn’t even recognize a GOP area. Kbowing the minute details of population migrations is a very useful in understanding the political instincts of the voters and knowing how to recruit a candidate, communicate with the voters and win.

“I’m angry. I’m angry! Angry, angry…ANGRY! It’s my Botox I got when I went to Beverly Hills that makes my face smile like this. The government is bad.”

  33. - wordslinger - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:11 am:

–My cuteness has always been a huge limiting factor in my life–

    I’m sure that’s it. Always a victim.

  34. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:12 am:

“I also smile like this at shiny objects…and kittens.”

  35. - Pete - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:30 am:

What does a Marathon and Politics have in common?

    This sign.

  36. - Rep. Ed Sullivan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:36 am:

@Fako, relax a bit here. I am sorry I did not have my super duper computer to run an analysis of the voting history of a place I have visited once. ‘Dem Country’ should have been ‘Represented by Dems’. Four speakers were introduced prior to the race. 75% were dems. Next time I run 13 miles I will be more careful with my off the cuff analysis.

@Dee Lay, Yes the race is underrated. Great run through the forest preserve. You can go fast. Of course you have to be built more like a cheetah and less like an ox. Ha

  37. - Arthur Andersen - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:36 am:

OW, we all know you, we’ve seen your pic here a couple of times lol.

Caption: “If you think I’m high, you should see my property taxes!”

  38. - VanillaMan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:41 am:

OW: Crash. Burn. Try to save face by insulting someone else’s.

  39. - Rich Miller - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 11:43 am:

C’mon folks, she’s a civilian. Lighten up on her.

If I knew what you meant, I am sure I would be insulted… maybe.

  42. - AFSCME Steward - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 12:34 pm:

Warning: anyone holding a sign in public, that mentions politics in any fashion, may end up in a caption contest.

  43. - AFSCME Steward - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 12:35 pm:

What’s sad, her handmade graphics are better than many of the professionally done campaign signs.

  48. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 1:02 pm:

    - FKA -,

My Running Mate slot is vacant for “Bill”. I can’t think of a better tribute then not replacing an original.

Much respect - FKA -, I just had to respond as I have.

She could be the head of my “Counter-Message” Squad(?)

  49. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 1:04 pm:

Representative Sullivan is correct concerning federal and state elected officials all being Dems - www.palosheights.org/government/departments/LocalElectedOfficialsPalosHeights.asp

  50. - Formerly Known As... - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 1:05 pm:

lol! Or maybe our new field director? I volunteer to handle GOTV.

  51. - Dave Fako - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 1:07 pm:

Rep Sullivan - not criticizing, just noting things. BTW, in addition to running an IL based political consulting firm that works nationally, I also organize sports / running events, so yes Mel and his Team at Running for Kicks in Palos Heights do a good job on that event.

So as a gesture of good will Rep Sullivan, you may have a free entry to the race I organize on May 10 - The Citgo Quarryman Challenge 10 Mile & 5K held in Lemont (home of Sen Rodagno). Its the hilliest, most challenging running race in the Chicago area.

  52. - Ela Observer - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 1:16 pm:

Ever since he was elected Fremont assessor in 1993, I don’t think Ed Sullivan has held a job other than as an elected government official.

Am I the only one who detects the irony?

“The state?! You’re going to try to fix the state? HAHAHAHAHA! You’re a funny guy.” - Homeless guy in Joliet this weekend as he tried to hit me up for money

  55. - Rep. Ed Sullivan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 3:51 pm:

    @Fako:

All good buddy. And yes being in the political environment in Illinois I do know Fako & Associates. Sometimes I would rather not(ha). As for the race, unfortunately Mrs. Half Marathon has me booked on the 10th. I love a challenge so if you remember let me know for next year. I can bring a crew of runners.

  56. - Rep. Ed Sullivan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 4:00 pm:

    ===Ela Observer:

Am I the only one who detects the irony?===

The irony of what? The Fremont Township Assessor’s office is one of the best run, most efficient assessor’s offices in the state. Very few Assessor’s offices produce the legal, statistical values that we do. You know this because you have been attacking me for more than a decade. Are you saying it is my fault that I have not been able to right the good ship Illinois from the minority party?

  57. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 4:04 pm:

===Ever since he was elected Fremont assessor in 1993, I don’t think Ed Sullivan has held a job other than as an elected government official.===

I know I am glad Rep. Sullivan is in the House, and a member bringing change to the HGOP Caucus.

Ignorance of someone doing their job as best they can versus Dopey remarks like that make good people shy away from public service, and those serving tired of defending all the good they try to do to “victims” of the idea of the moment.

Keep plugging, and don’t apologize for doing your job as best you can. Big fan. OW

  58. - Rep. Ed Sullivan - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 5:23 pm:

    OW-Much appreciated

And, ironically, ACTUAL Running IS one of the ways we can try to work off feeling the STRESS brought ON by thinking about the very TRUTH which the Statement sometimes BRINGS…!”

(By the way, did you ever notice how many Politicians like, or need, let alone the REST of us, to JOG)?!

  60. - Oswego Willy - Monday, May 5, 14 @ 8:10 pm:

    - FKA -, just don’t golf on Election Day…
