Rauner still pushing term limits

Tuesday, May 10, 2016 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Gov. Rauner was asked yesterday about his demand for term limits as part of his Turnaround Agenda. He noted that it was too late at the moment to get the issue on the ballot for this fall, but he had another suggestion

“But you know what? We could vote now in the General Assembly or next week or next month and get it on the ballot in 2018. Let’s do that. How about we vote as part of our grand compromise and grand reforms and get term limits on the ballot in 2018?”

Look, the governor has been pretty good about watching his mouth lately, but it’s kinda dangerous to set expectations this high. I mean, what did the Tribune say about Trump when they bashed him the other day? Oh, yeah, he “promises big changes, most of which appear either implausible or too vague to take seriously.”

Find. Another. Way.

    ===”But you know what?…===

    No, what. Seriously, “what”

    What, governor. What. Ugh. Awful.

You know what? Governor, you need to work on sounding… less “inquisitive”.

    Geez.

===”…We could vote now in the General Assembly or next week or next month and get it on the ballot in 2018. Let’s do that. How about we vote as part of our grand compromise and grand reforms and get term limits on the ballot in 2018?”===

Says the Governor “who” has a Floor Leader that is more likely to grate on Democratic Members like the Speaker, bringing up Rauner, Gonzalez, and the result of that “Term Limit”

Rauner is awful on his feet.

    Well…it polls well.

Another sighting of the goofy Rauner.

    ==”How about we…”==

    Now? Seriously?

  5. - maddog - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:19 am:

While we are at it, how about changing the term of the Governor to TWO years. so we can keep the governor on a short leash

  6. - LizPhairTax - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:36 am:

Was he laying on his back tossing a ball against the ceilin’ and just spitballin’ idears?

Also, any third grader knows the answer to “you know what”

    At least they used to…

The only way to get your legislature more in the pocket of corporate interests is to have term limits. Then the lobbyists are the only ones who know how anything works. I’ve watched it happen in the last three states I lived in. That’s how you get reams of ALEC legislation and HB2 in North Carolina. Just say no.

  8. - Earnest - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:38 am:

It’s just distraction from the starve the beast strategy.

  9. - lake county democrat - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:45 am:

It may have frustrated the Tribune, but it won Donald Trump the Republican nomination and took Bernie Sanders farther than anyone expected. When something is backed by 80% of the voters and doesn’t cost the taxpayers a dime, you’re probably going to talk about it, especially when the rest of your agenda isn’t as popular…

  10. - Annonin' - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:48 am:

Here is a term limit that can be applied in ‘18 — BigBrain can go

  11. - RNUG - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:52 am:

Hey, instead, let’s put a graduated income tax on the ballot now for 2018.

  12. - wordslinger - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:53 am:

    Look, a kitty!

Willful destruction of the state’s fiscal position, higher ed and social services and you’re yammering on about term limits?

Don’t kid yourself, the governor knows what he’s doing and he’s succeeding at his plan. The fact that he can get the media to bite at his ludicrous distractions must have the Superstars laughing themselves silly.

  13. - Jocko - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 11:55 am:

    ==How about we vote..==

How about you a submit a budget for the ensuing fiscal year? Your suggestion is optional, mine is constitutionally required.

  14. - Ghost - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 12:03 pm:

i think terms limits is just dse franchising voters in a condescending we know better then you big dutopian govt kind of thing.

if yah cant get the voters to elect somone esle then this is just a backdoor sore loser way to tru and win the election

  15. - Federalist - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 12:21 pm:

I strongly believe in term limits. Twelve years would be plenty.

Do something in your life except be a politician. After twelve years step aside.

Next thing we know, he will be like, “I call dibs on…” Not that he NEEDS to call dibs, cuz, ya know, he HAS dibs, or like, thinks he has dibs, on ya know, like everything.

  17. - Very fed up - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 1:24 pm:

Agreed Federalist. This should be an easy no brainer to put through. It is supported by wide majorities in both parties and doesnt cost a penny.

  18. - RNUG - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 2:00 pm:

If we are going to do term limits, let’s also try to preserve some institutional knowledge at the beginning. Have it apply to one-third of all the seats the first election year, one-third in year 5 and the final one-third in year 9. At the beginning, use a lottery to determine which third each seat falls into. After the phase in period, it’s strictly if you’ve reached 12 years.

  19. - South Illinoisian - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 4:07 pm:

I think if pensions for politicians were abolished, the incentive to make politics a career would disappear.

  20. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 4:42 pm:

    Let’s get radical Bruce:

A single six-year term for governor
A unicameral legislature of 100 members
A wealth tax on the “.01 percent”

I assume you also seek medical care and get financial advice from professionals with fewer than 12 years experience in their field.

Why is it that folks value experience in most important aspects of life, except for their government, at which point amateur hour is cool for them?

  22. - cannon649 - Tuesday, May 10, 16 @ 8:42 pm:

Two terms in any office is plenty. We do not even need a law to vote them out.

In my opinion career politicians have placed themselves first and voters second. It makes far easier for lobby interests.

A limit or cap on pensions help the state in many ways.

  23. - Anonymous - Wednesday, May 11, 16 @ 11:22 am:

Term limits. While I agree this state and the country absolutely needs them, the reality is that the ones who need term limits are the ones who decide whether or not term limits ever get voted on. It’ll never happen.
