Rauner claims he was outspent
Tuesday, Feb 14, 2017 - Posted by Rich Miller * At the 45:45 mark of this Chicago Sun-Times video, Gov. Bruce Rauner was asked if he was troubled by the fact that the three leading people who are running for governor right now (including Rauner himself) “could only do so because they are extremely wealthy.” Rauner’s response…
Very true. But then he went on to say this…
Um, what? * I checked with the folks over at the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, who sent me a spreadsheet. Click here. ICPR totaled up all money spent by both major party 2014 gubernatorial candidates and also by outside groups. It came up with $42,007,560 spent by or on behalf of Pat Quinn and $65,432,067 by or on behalf of Bruce Rauner.

What is it these days with GOPers and their easy ability to lie. Rauner, Trump, KellyAnne Conway. Please Bruce, just stop.
- Ducky LaMoore - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:34 am:
What do you expect? He quit managing his own money affairs and his income tripled….
- Anonymous - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:36 am:
Alternative Spending, it’s a thing now.
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:37 am:
With math like this, no wonder he can’t put together a budget.
- Liberty - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:38 am:
Just more evidence our governor suffers from a personality disorder.
- zatoichi - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:38 am:
Must be that alternative money out there.

Poor BigBrain outspent by those devils ….BTW who is counting the dough that paid out for the fake newspapers, documentaries and radio networks? The answer is no one since BigBrain isn’t trying to get a tax break.

FAKE NEWS!
Right?

- Deft Wing - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:40 am:
Yet another unforced error. These regularly occur whenever the Gov goes off script. His advisers do him no favors when they do not help save him from himself — by getting him to stay message focused.
- wordslinger - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:41 am:
Rauner is also staying on the sidelines in the Senate budget negotiations but he has to rush back to the Capitol to engage in some hardball budget negotiations with legislators.
He also doesn’t pay attention to politics one second, and the next second puts out a tweet ripping Kennedy as a Madigan stooge.
The guy has never had a problem telling whoppers — contradictory ones in the same day — when they serves his immediate purpose.
- illini - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:44 am:
Just more “alternative facts” and “faux news” - should we expect anything less? We know better than to expect that from BVR and his bought and paid for shills.
- Nick Name - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:45 am:
Well if he can’t add to 60 and 30, I guess we can’t expect him to be able to add to $65.4 million either.
- Anon - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:45 am:
Just announced, Team Rauner is launching a new blog to respond to what they read on Capitol Fax.
It’s called “Alternative Fax.”
- NoUseForAName - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:47 am:
I can understand this coming from his mouth as a legitimate disconnect from reality as much as anything… those who can donate $50M to themselves without batting an eye can afford to be very flippant and dissociated in this way.
So maybe he wasn’t lying so much as he couldn’t be bothered to remember a difference in two sums that amounts to a rounding error for him and others of his ilk?
- Roman - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:47 am:
When reporters allow your steady stream of half-truths to go unchallenged, why not try to get away with a real whopper every once and a while?

== He quit managing his own money affairs and his income tripled….==
Can we get the people running Rauner’s businesses to run the State while he takes a 2 year vacation?
- Michelle Flaherty - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:48 am:
He was outspent in much the same way his previous budget proposals were balanced.
Just ask him.
- Oswego Willy - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:48 am:
Rauner continues two things that makes his turn in the Big Chair troubling;
Rauner can’t speak extemporaneously and use facts at the same time.
Rauner continues to use what he thinks people want to hear or make up narratives to what people want to hear, even if easily refutable facts exist.
Rauner can’t be trusted to speak for himself. How can others trust him and his words when they do talk to him without his talking points?
Here’s the spoiler, you can’t trust his words.
- Amalia - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 11:48 am:
how obscene to complain about spending that relates to just you Gov. especially when real people are having real problems because of a fiscal failure to lead by Gov. Rauner.

When you’re a billionaire, $23 million is chump change.

Linus, that was exactly my point. Rauner is Trumpian.

If you count the spending of the 3 to 5 million illegal immigrants in Beardstown then I’m sure Rauner’s math adds up.

Mike Madigan and the Rich Miller he controls.

Rauner has a two-year head start on whoppers and alternative facts in office. Perhaps it’s more accurate to say that Trump is a Raunerite.

For what it is worth the Dem PAC were very active in 2014…Quinn’s campaign also has been assisted by a union and Democratic-affiliated political action committee, the Illinois Freedom PAC. The group spent more than $3.5 million in the primary in an effort to defeat Rauner, and it has nearly $4.8 million available for spending in the general election.
In addition, several other political action committees are spending more than $4.4 million they raised on several advisory-only ballot proposals aimed at driving Democratic turnout, including a proposal asking voters if they support an increase in the minimum wage.

But those figures do not include “nonpartisan” voter education campaigns. Actual donations are only a fraction of what unions spend to influence elections, for example.
Those are the technically legal expenditures. Now add in all the “ghost” city employees paid to do political work.
And that’s not even counting how much of the “mainstream media” coverage should be considered a donation in kind to Democrats…

“65m is always more than 42m”
Not in the alternative facts universe.
We have fallen through a black hole where lies are truth and truth are lies. Where people, with a straight face, will tell lies with the expectations that what they say will be accepted as truth.

Seems the ever increasing motto is why let the truth stand in the way of a perfectly good lie…..

After all this destruction. I have but one question for Rainer and his crew. Why? Ideology isn’t worth destroying a state for personal satisfaction.

Yeah, as always, they were in the tank for Quinn. He’s as popular with them as he is with other politicians.
You don’t like the “mainstream media,” I take it. Where do you get your information then, from the “backwater” or “fringe” media?
- Big Joe - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 1:33 pm:
As George Costanza would say, “Bruce, it’s not a lie, if you believe it.” This whole Rauner thing is a show, that’s a show.
- allknowingmasterofracoondom - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 1:53 pm:
Honest question, does this spending include the primary? Anyone know?
- Birdseed - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 2:06 pm:
Rauner might be right if we consider the millions Quinn threw around in the anti-violence program.

This is either
1) Flat-out, self-serving lying
or
2) Indicative of a personality type that has learned to blurt out that which he wants to be true, regardless of the facts.
Buyer’s remorse yet, fellow Illinois voters?
- DuPage Bard - Tuesday, Feb 14, 17 @ 4:40 pm:
I really just feel so bad for Bruce the constant victim. Must be tough to have 9 houses, tons of money to play with and still be persecuted so heartlessly.

There you go treating him unfairly again Rich. It’s not easy for billionaires to count to a measly $13 M

Those can be the same.
Unless, if in Number 2, he can’t distinguish between truth and lies.
That’s Blago-like big trouble.
