* So, you have a press conference in front of a rival’s house to announce an endorsement? Seriously?…

Dude, it’s a man’s house, where his children live.

This race is starting to get out of hand.

Wasn’t going to vote for Biss anyway, but this definitely cements my decision.

  2. - Jocko - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:34 pm:

Biss thought he was taking the high road by leaving the rolls of TP at home.

  3. - Norseman - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

    Pathetic.

Decency has always been a problem during campaigns, but nowadays - the Trumpian era - it’s almost non-existent.

  4. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

Assuming Biss wins the nomination, has it occurred to him yet that he’ll be asking Pritzker for support in the general? How does this stunt help with that future conversation?

  5. - Pyrman - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

what a classless move by Biss. Will make it very difficult for JB voters to vote for Biss in November if he wins the primary.

  6. - Pot calling kettle - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:35 pm:

I’ve been torn between Biss and JB; leaning JB but definitely open to Biss. This pushes me in JB’s direction.

  7. - Retired Educator - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:36 pm:

A real juvenile move. How about if his opponents do their endorsements in front of his house? Not close to being well thought out.

  8. - Baloneymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:38 pm:

I feel bad for people who were asked to attend this goofy event. Bad move by Dan. Not cool.

  9. - Anonish - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:38 pm:

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

    Be better.

  10. - Tequila Mockingbird - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:38 pm:

I think it’s kinda funny. At least it’s real and not fabricated.

  11. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:39 pm:

This will just have more moops driving around our neighborhood……which usually only happens on Halloween. Maybe he is trying to scare voters. He is one and done.

  12. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:41 pm:

If he will resort to these tactics, he has zero moral compass. Go JB.

  13. - Bobio - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:42 pm:

Biss really should have been an undertaker. Did you see that photo?

  14. - Iggy - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:42 pm:

    https://capitolfax.com/2017/11/15/two-unions-inflatable-rat-show-up-at-rep-michael-mcauliffes-house/

Using union contractors on private home construction isn’t exactly common. But I guess stuff like this happens when Rep. Michael McAullife, Chicago’s only Republican state legislator, who has past union support but then repeatedly voted against unions on a bill to ban the creation of local “right to work” zones in Illinois and then hired non-union workers for extensive renovation work on his house…

How come this behavior wasn’t “out of hand”

  15. - Montrose - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:43 pm:

I don’t get the strategic value of this move. I guess it pumps up his base? I am guessing there are a good number of Biss donors that have pretty fancy homes. Are they ok because they put their money into Biss?

I get it. He has a narrative he is trying to reinforce. I understand the conversation that led to this decision. I think it is a short term hit that undermines long term strategy.

  16. - Put the fun in unfunded - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:44 pm:

Couldn’t he have done it in front of the house next door? Maybe as a Habitat for Humanity event with volunteers to help them get indoor plumbing.

  17. - Iggy - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:48 pm:

    =he has zero moral compass=

Aren’t they in front of the “uninhabitable” one?

  19. - UndecidedVoted - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:52 pm:

Incredibly disappointed in BIss. This is just childish. I used to support him but after this stunt and his flip flop on pensions and his attacks on students, ill be voting for JB. #BissPlease

  20. - Anon0091 - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:52 pm:

“I don’t get the strategic value of this move.”

Well it does distract from the fact that Bernie Sanders is in town but is not endorsing Biss despite his best effort to impersonate a Bernie bro. So there’s that.

  21. - Downstate Dem - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:53 pm:

Biss is working hard to get the Bernie Sanders supporters. That’s the “Our Revolution” group, and this move is straight outta the Bernie playbook.

Every time I think I’ve decided on the person I’m voting for on March 20, he does something stupid. Maybe I’ll flip a coin that day.

  22. - One hand //ing - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:54 pm:

Obviously the neighborhood drives the property values here but I gotta believe the imaginary image of JB’s mansion is more effective than the actual image.

A similar stunt in Dan’s neighborhood (or his new donor’s neighborhood) would certainly find properties more typically considered to be “mansions”.

  23. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:54 pm:

This man wants to lead this state out of crisis and yet behaves like an undisciplined child. Stay home with your crayons.

  24. - Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:55 pm:

Biss’ entire campaign has been real estate-focused. His modest house plays a central role in his ad; now this.

What’s not clear is the point he’s trying to make beyond, “Pritzker is rich; I’m not.” That by itself isn’t going to motivate people. Ok, Dan, we get it. You’re middle class. And then what? How does that relate to what you will or won’t do as governor?

  25. - Gimme A Break - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:56 pm:

That said, this is a bush league stunt. Poorly conceived, in poor taste and poorly executed. Nobody outside it the Gold Coast has any idea what the backdrop is. That’s not the Rockefeller mansion in the background. It’s a brick building. Is he that desperate for coverage that he needs to pull a ham-handed move like this? This is a zero sum move.

  26. - Amalia - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:57 pm:

have a beer with Biss? no. JB? no. Green beer with Kennedy.

  27. - Natty_B - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 12:57 pm:

Our Revolution endorsed Dennis Kucinich yesterday

  28. - bisstake - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:01 pm:

This is abhorrent. Biss has launched many personal attacks this race, but this is absolutely over the line.

  29. - Moe Berg - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:01 pm:

Behind the scenes, Biss behaves like a temperamental adolescent.

What this press conference lacked was Daniel holding a boombox defiantly over his head.

  30. - lake county democrat - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:03 pm:

“I know the neighbors will never get these moments back in their life, but durnit, I’m worth it!”

  31. - City Zen - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:05 pm:

Did he ask to use the bathroom?

  32. - GMC GENERAL - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:05 pm:

Biss has the amazing ability to sleep while standing up.

  33. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:06 pm:

Maybe this isn’t the right forum to say this but this action really annoys me because it seems like Biss is sorta saying we should resent a person that is wealthy. I want to be wealthy and try hard to be so. But every time I here Biss say he thinks wealthy should pay more I wonder why should I work so hard to do better for myself if I have to then give up more because he wants to help people that don’t try. I have no problem and believe in paying taxes to help those who can’t Its helping those who can but don’t want to and trying to get people to say the wealthy should pay up a lot more gets me. I’m a dem but I hate when I hear dem candidates talk that way because it seems they are saying being succseful is bad and we should make wealthy people pay for everything, even programs that don’t work but mean votes for them. I’d like to hear a dem say let’s look at the programs we got and figure out what’s working and what’s not and reallocate or cut as needed.

  34. - Wowzer - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:11 pm:

Biss is guaranteed of losing now with the Our Revolution band behind him. They represent Bernie who outside of making himself a national figure loses and everyone he endorses loses. Biss now has the received the reverse Midas touch. If I were a conspiracy theorist I’d wager “Our Revolution” was nothing but a plant organization to disrupt and eventually destroy the Democratic party.

  35. - ChangingVote - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:13 pm:

LOW CLASS, SEN. BISS. You’re better than this garbage. The inexperienced and immature ‘Bernie Bro’ groups you’re aligning with aren’t - you know, the one that publicly berated a young female Board of Election staffer during a committee and post-communications for no reason other than petty spectacle and bullying - but you are better, and you should continue to be above these childish stunts that continue to ruin politics and government. You OWE JB AND US, the voters, an apology for demeaning our political process and target someone’s private life and Home.

Not anymore. That’s a low move Daniel.

  39. - Cheryl44 - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:14 pm:

  40. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:19 pm:

I haven’t planned on voting for Biss anyway, but all the pearl clutching, my goodness. It’s just a building that anyone can see by walking down the street.

  41. - Northsider (the original) - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:20 pm:

This is creepy. I’m disappointed he allowed this, he was my back-up choice. Not any more.

  42. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:21 pm:

And everyone’s address is on Intelius or White pages, so what is the big deal?

  43. - Sigh - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:21 pm:

    — hinting at income inequality—
Yet, Biss takes a campaign contribution from Steven
Schuler? I’m sure the Schuler’s House would have been a beautiful event location. I’m jealous I don’t have a house like this.

The Schulers purchased the home in December 2003 for $900,000 and built a four-story addition onto the back, which added 2,500 square feet. The addition allowed for a large kitchen and family room, as well as a screened-in porch and deck. The family created a full-height finished basement. The home has 12-foot-high ceilings throughout.

The Schulers also added a 2,300-square-foot, two-story, four-car garage with an English lift. Originally, the home is said to have had a barn/carriage house, and they tried to imagine what it would’ve looked like when designing their own. One of the bays serves as an exercise room, and Schuler regards the additional area as “flex space”—there’s a theater room and room for an office upstairs. There is also a kitchenette and full bath.

    http://www.oakpark.com/News/Articles/8-30-2005/The-way-to-treat-a-lady/

Biss is no longer the candidate for the common person. {sigh} I agree he crossed the line by having a press conference in front of his opponent’s house.

Hmmm, I missed the outrage on this blog when people protested in front of Rauner’s home.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/87728773-132.html

  46. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:22 pm:

Iggy, that was a vacant construction site.

  47. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:26 pm:

===when people protested in front of Rauner’s home===

That demonstration had a purpose. It was issue-based. Not an empty campaign stunt.

I also didn’t object when the GOP did a thing in front of the empty mansion next door to Pritzker’s house because it served the purpose of highlighting the toilet/property tax issue.

  48. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:26 pm:

This doesn’t surprise me. Biss has no class, integrity, or honor

He will not receive my vote or the votes of my family and friends

  49. - Back to the Future - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:27 pm:

    Agree with Rich Miller.

  50. - cdog - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:27 pm:

It’s class warfare, declared regularly standard MoveOn efforts. Expect no peace if you’re in the 1%, from the other 1% that loudly object to your success.

That’s who Biss is, unfortunately. He is such a smart guy, but has chosen this path.

  51. - Big Joe - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:27 pm:

I have been open to both Dan Biss and JB, but this childish stunt by Dan is in such bad taste I am now ignoring everything he says. After crafting SB1, and now this. He just made my decision a lot easier. Go JB.

  52. - Oswego Willy - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:29 pm:

Activists or those going to homes on a specific rationale…

    … versus a candidate… a person… running against another… and to use a location, a home, as a prop, not as a subject of policy…

  53. - Lester Holt’s Mustache - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:29 pm:

His target audience is the far left wing, and many of those folks instinctively dislike anyone with wealth of any kind so I can see how he thought this would be a good move. Unfortunately Dan has a long history of acting without thinking through the long-term consequences first. As 47th said, he’s doing his best to alienate a potential donor should he win the nomination.

  55. - brooker - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:40 pm:

Daniel Biss is not a nice person. He’s phony and full of himself. One day others will realize this and I hope before the election.

  56. - Nacho - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:40 pm:

==Oh, lord, is he still around? Ohio’s answer to Pat Quinn.==

Nowadays he mostly seems to keep himself busy by appearing on Fox News to praise Trump.

  57. - Sigh - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:41 pm:

@Iggy- thanks for sharing the Rep. Michael McAullife link. You asked: “How come this behavior wasn’t “out of hand”… I quickly scrolled the comments on that post and forgive me if I’m wrong, but I must have missed comments from “Iggy” on that post. Why didn’t you defend McAullife then?

    Like Rich pointed out, McAullife’s wife and two children were not living in the house during the rehab. Didn’t McAullife claim the mobile sign drove past his children’s school (and he was upset) and he called his wife to tell her to take a different route when she took the kids to school? {sigh}

Did McAullife get some permit that prohibits “protests” or gatherings in front of his house until Mach 21, 2018 bc it’s a work zone? Which happens to be the day after the primary election.

  58. - Just Observing - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:49 pm:

I agree that this is not appropriate. That said, I’m guessing, it felt appropriate to Biss and organizers because this is a busy, Chicago neighborhood with lots of foot traffic and comotion compared to a sleepy suburban or rural neighborhood. Kinda like holding a press conference out on 5th Ave. in NYC. Again, not condoning, but I can see why someone might think it would be fine doing.

  59. - Amalia - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:50 pm:

interesting that Iggy and others mention the stunt in the McAuliffe race last cycle. Today’s Biss incident (Bisscident?) will look tame compared to what is to come again re McAuliffe. given that his opponent (Marwig again) had Ald. Quinn helming her campaign, they will have to ratchet it up to cover the Quinn issues. Biss and Our Revolution will look mild by comparison.

  60. - Anton Cermak - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:51 pm:

I’m guessing Biss did this since he shows his own house in his campaign ads. By the way, there are plenty of pictures of JB’s mansion the internet, so it’s not like this was a state secret or anything. https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-politics/billionaire-illinois-governor-hopeful-jb-pritzker-let-mansion-fall-into-disrepair-saved-230000-on-taxes-on-uninhabitable-3-7-million-home-watchdogs-democrat/

  61. - Arsenal - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:54 pm:

==I’m guessing, it felt appropriate to Biss and organizers because this is a busy, Chicago neighborhood with lots of foot traffic and comotion==

I think most good Advance folks would tell you that venues with a lot of natural foot traffic and commotion are actually lousy for campaign events.

  62. - LeonDespres - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:55 pm:

In a city, as part of a campaign where this house has been such a big part of the narrative for one candidate, where photos of it have been printed in newspapers… I just don’t see why this is considered that big of a deal — seems like a lot of feigned outrage.

  63. - Soapbox Derby - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:56 pm:

“Dude, it’s a man’s house, where his children live.”

Don’t worry children, this is “an issue based protest”, not a “stunt”.

I’m sure they’ll understand the difference.

  64. - Arsenal - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 1:56 pm:

If he’d just gone all the way and talked about toilets or whatever, I’d've actually tipped my cap to him for putting together a good stunt. But just announcing some out-of-state endorsement? What’s the point? I get the feeling he’s kind of freaked out about Bernie being in town today.

  65. - wordslinger - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:00 pm:

Homes, children and adult family who choose not to be directly involved are off limits.

No one should have to be told that. It’s just simple decency.

  66. - Just a gal - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:01 pm:

This is such an enormous misstep, I can’t believe there wasn’t someone in the Biss bubble to see the awful aftermath that would ensue. Screams bad sportsmanship.

I don’t want to vote for JB or Kennedy. This is a very disappointing development.

  67. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:02 pm:

Rauner’s children are adults and don’t live at home.

  68. - Skirmisher - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:06 pm:

Well, that wraps it. There is now no candidate from either party who does not churn my stomach. First time ever that in good conscience I cannot vote for any candidate.

  69. - Bobio - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:08 pm:

I think Biss has run a pretty good grass roots campaign but maybe they are running out of steam and getting desperate. These are two of the most forlorn looking photos. How do you get so many people not to smile?

  70. - QuimbysSash - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:10 pm:

Daniel Biss always comes off (to me)as that condescending college professor whose class I skipped quite a bit. JB Pritzker, who I also met, comes off(to me) like that fun dad at a kids’ baseball game— who takes the team for pizza and pop afterward. This recent stunt is beyond lame. #BissPuhleese

  77. - Veil of Ignorance - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:34 pm:

I’m not sold this is a problem or taboo move. It’s aggressive and on the edge at the very least, but they’re not knocking on his door, etc. It’s on the sidewalk and - similar to the GOP event - the issue is arguably about what kind of political system we want in IL. It speaks to the question whether we think it’s okay for wealthy people in our state (such as those who live in the Gold Coast) to be able to drop $50+ million of their own money to run for a statewide office and grab up endorsements by the dozens as a result. To be clear, if Chicago media would’ve come up to Evanston, I would’ve suggested that Biss do this presser in front his actual home to reinforce his own TV ads.

  78. - 44th - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 2:36 pm:

Haven’t been following Biss that much, but my quick google search shows he published some false math paper and took a long time to correct it. So that is his claim to fame? Some lecturing failed academic is what we have to offer? no txs.

This guy went to Harvard and MIT and yet still can’t figure out how to make a living but thinks he should be governor? Inspiring

  97. - Tj - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 3:41 pm:

So… the Democratic race is down to an out of touch rich boy, a whacko, and a person that doesn’t understand personal boundaries?

Whelp…. this is going to be a fun choice….

  98. - Ron Burgundy - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:18 pm:

Yeah I don’t like this, just like I don’t like that pols like Rahm have to deal with protesters outside their private homes. Leave the family out of it.

  99. - charlatan - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:23 pm:

    Biss should withdraw

  100. - Ron - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:27 pm:

    Still Kennedy for me.

  101. - SAP - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:33 pm:

==Biss is turning grass roots into crass roots.== And behaving like a glass bowl.

  102. - Blimp - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:36 pm:

I’m not that offended. As we live in the Trump era, I have seen worse. Should this cement a JB vote for me after his recent recording? That was for more offensive to me.

Seems like all candidates have a few missteps on this campaign.

If Biss is smart, he’ll recognizes the blowback and be more thoughtful and cautious next time. This incident won’t be remembered by most of the voters. Although it is acutely recognized by politicos on this site..

  103. - Steve - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:37 pm:

Daniel Biss shows he’s a committed Marxist..

  104. - wayward - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:40 pm:

I did wonder if the retracted paper had anything to do with Biss’s decision to “give up” seeking tenure at U. Chicago and go into politics.

  105. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:44 pm:

Danny.. just promise each and every resident of Illinois a Labrador puppy and this will all bit forgotten

  106. - The Bashful Raconteur - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:45 pm:

So Biss is not punching too low here, at least no lower than nearly every politician does. Kids in the mansion? Probably could not see or hear the outdoorsy hubbub. Ignore it anyway. Not like they had pitchforks and torches. I am not a Biss fan, he is as fake as they come. But he is a real politician.

  107. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 4:48 pm:

Where are his ANTIFA supporters for this roadshow ?

  108. - Anon0091 - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 5:04 pm:

Funny that this event, and the Chuy/Bernie event have gotten zero coverage. Zilch. Nada.

  109. - Trapped in the ‘burbs - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 5:40 pm:

This is who Biss is. Say anything, do anything to push him into the limelight. Why does he get a pass on running a multi-million dollar PAC funded by Madigan allies? Seriously, isn’t it obvious he got to head that Rauner attack PAC to improve his profile as a thank you for dropping out of the race against Mendoza. He’s a phony and doesn’t want to go back to teachin’.

  110. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 6:37 pm:

    ==Daniel Biss shows he’s a committed marxist.==
Biss believes the economy should be run by the central government?
Rauner has EDGE to give taxpayer money to companies he likes. You can’t get more Marxist than that.

  111. - Produce Man - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 6:37 pm:

In the spirit that all publicity is good publicity, it appears State Senator Daniel Biss found a stage to show off the Move On and Our Revolution endorsements. He does not have $50 million of his own bucks to drown out the competition. Pritzker has used his money to buy off the Democratic Party the way Rauner has the Republican Party. Most of the comments on this blog are using Rich Miller’s expression of concern to tat and feather Biss as an elitist and my god an experienced public official. Hey governance takes skill and experience, not just a checkbook.

  112. - Anonymous - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 7:47 pm:

    @ Produce man @ 6:37 pm
Welcome to 2018, nice to have you.

  113. - Anon - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 9:06 pm:

He has behaved like a petulant child to all those who are supporting other democrats. As much as I dislike Rauner, if Biss managed to win a primary, I would work on senate and house races rather than help him. It is also funny that he is trying to pass himself off as a fighter for the middle class.

  114. - Anon - Thursday, Feb 22, 18 @ 10:40 pm:

This guy has the longest Index finger I’ve ever seen.

  115. - NorthsideNoMore - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 2:59 am:

Biss is an intelectuall elitist ( ever have a 2 min conversation w him ? ) with no pragmatic experience. Managing a small senate district meh not so much a good fit in Illinois. When the chips are down on a national stage the Gov has to fight for his state, the DB schtick will wear thin fast in DC

  116. - Da Big Bad Wolf - Friday, Feb 23, 18 @ 6:26 am:

Creepy Uncle Joe, Biden never said Romney wanted to put black people in chains. He said Romney’s economic policies (removing the reforms of wall street) would put people (meaning the American people) in chains. There happened to be some black people in the audience.
