Cook GOP official resigns in wake of scandal

I strongly encourage you to read the whole article, but the gist is that a young woman complained about a way too handsy president of the Chicago Young Republicans, Jeremy Rose…
When she tried to leave, it only got worse. “Jeremy and the other guy refused to walk me out, saying I needed to stay and hang out with them, and Jeremy took my phone away from me (I had been trying to call a cab) and sat on my lap, not letting me up.
“At this point I felt like his behavior was bordering on keeping me there by force. At last the girl who was there walked me out to the street and I hailed a cab and went home.”
After allegedly being briefed on the complaint, Cook County Republican Party Chairman Lee Roupas hired Rose as the county party’s political director, then promoted him to executive director. Roupas now claims that he didn’t really know much about what was going on, a claim that is challenged in a sworn statement.
And if that wasn’t enough, Roupas then attempted to foment a rebellion against Eloise Gerson, the chairwoman of the Chicago Republican Party, after Gerson and her chief legal counsel demanded that Roupas’ executive director resign…
Frustrated with his failure to oust Gerson, Roupas was allegedly overheard in an angry rant after the meeting, calling Gerson “boss b**ch.” And, despite objections by many committeemen that the new post appeared to undermine Gerson’s authority, Roupas announced the appointment of a Chicago Chair of the CCRP in an email on July 1.
“This is like the Catholic Church all over again, where the cover-up is worse than the crime, and there’s this concerted effort to try to shut down the whistleblower,” said CRP political director Tom Swiss in an interview. “He [Roupas] has a meeting and tries to vote her out and get her removed from her position, because she brings this complaint to him and he doesn’t want to be bothered by it.”
This scandal has been building on smaller blogs for weeks. Kudos to Huffington Post for ferreting out the full story. And it had results. Rose has resigned…
And indeed, though many details of the story remain to be unearthed, the inquiries have already caused one head to roll: within an hour of concluding his interview with Huffington Post Chicago, Chairman Roupas circulated a letter to Republican officials announcing the resignation of Jeremy Rose.
“I feel it is best for our GOP team that I step aside as executive director so you and the Republican Committeemen can continue without distraction the work needed to win in November,” Rose writes in his resignation letter.
Again, go read the whole thing. Rose may be gone, but Roupas apparently still has some explaining to do.

My read on this latest dustup is that while that Eloise Gerson (a GOP official herself) clearly has a personal political agenda in all this, cook county gop chairman Lee Roupas really screwed up by trying to oust her from some position in a way that looked at least like he was doing it just because she had brought this other woman’s complaint forward. That’s bad. I think Roupas and Rose were outflanked by a little faction that frankly is probably no better and may even be worse from a behavior perspective.
What I hear is that Lee Roupas’ head is next on the chopping block because state chair Pat Brady is worried he’ll be dragged in more if he doesn’t do more.
In this case I think they’ve got Lee Roupas dead to rights.

Lee Roupas should resign now. He is an unfit leader. Leaders take action. With all the political sexual scandals over the past few years, he should never have hired Rose to begin with. But, Lee is a member of the Chicago Young Republicans. Rose is the president of the CYRs. So they are pals.
There are some unanswered questions. No one knows what Rose did for his salary. He did nothing for the Cook County Party and everything for the CYRS. It appeared he was being paid by the county party to work full time for the CYRs. Can you spell ghost pay rolling?
Lee Roupas needs to do the honorable thing and resign. There are still to many questions and no answers. There should be a responsible person somewhere who can take his place.

The underlying claim from the woman who wanted to keep her identity secret probably doesn’t rise to the level of a crime. But her statement did describe some very creepy behavior on the part of Rose.
The real story is how the whole thing was mismanaged. And as it looks like Lee Roupas is going to be gone because he can’t defend what appears to be a retaliatory action against a woman who brought another woman’s complaint forward. And frankly it doesn’t even matter that the woman Roupas tried to punish (Eloise Gerson) no doubt was motivated entirely by politics. Doesn’t really matter that she probably used this other woman (the true victim of the creepy behavior) as just a tool to undermine a political enemy (Roupas).

Okay - she gets drunk at a bar late at night and goes to the home of a guy that was clearly flirting with her. IF what she says is 100% true, AND she was not sending mixed signals/participating in innuendo, THEN I agree he was acting way too familiar. We have not heard the account from all people involved.
But the VICTIM of a crime? Come one now, guys. Young people horse around like this all the time and she might have been giving bad (ahem NO) cues and/or he might have mis-read them. How can any of you liken it to date rape? You are minimizing what real victims go through.
If this is the worst behavior the GOP is capable of, it’s pretty darn mild by Chicago standards. I have seen many late-night alcohol-imbibed scenarios such as the one recounted by our nameless (ahem cowardly) “victim” and I believe responsiblity usually should be shared when one person offends another by taking a flirtation too far.
The girl should have better sense, better control over her alcohol consumption, clearer boundaries, and better judgment about when she should try to blow up somebody’s career by way of the proverbial “whistle”.

Jeremy has done a pretty good job with the Young Republican group, so this is pretty disappointing. As always, any cover up that took place here seems to be much worse than what transpired.

Figure it out. Rose and CYRs have raised thousands over past couple of years. Gerson’s Chicago Republican Party has raised almost nothing. Gerson was also behind the “topless” website (get your facts straight, Bluefish) and Roupas’s work to oust Gerson appears to be due to that as well as her non-performance. Where Gerson clearly appears to perform is this smear employed as a counter-offensive to avoid her own ouster.

There wasn’t really much of a “cover up.” The CYRs report neither directly to the Cook County GOP nor to the ILGOP: they are a chapter within a national federation of young republican chapters. The original e-mail was sent to Rick Veenstra, national YR legal counsel and former IL YR Chairman in 2009. Within days, statewide YR leadership met with Rose to talk to him about the situation. Apologies were made, he agreed to be more careful in his role, and a risk-management/anonymous complaint policy was adopted by the CYRs to ensure a safe environment for CYR members moving forward. To the best of everybody’s knowledge, these steps were satisfactory, including to the woman who made the original complaint. From July 2009 onward there were no additional complaints from other people nor from the woman who wrote the original e-mail.
The only exception were members of the Chicago GOP who began to use the incident as fodder to score political points. Tom Swiss & the Chicago GOP is the same group that posted the naked women on their website. Ever since Keely Drukala left as president of the CYRs, Jeremy Rose and a group of about a dozen other officers grew the CYRs to over 1,000 dues paying members within a year. The lion’s share of GOP activity in Chicago was massing towards the CYRs. The CYRs were raising tens of thousands of dollars, landing regular earned media, and mounting paid media campaigns in the city. The Chicago GOP was feeling increasingly marginalized and decided to weaponize the original e-mail complaint for political gain. An imprudent lap-sitting (with several other men & women in the room at the time) thusly morphed into “attempted rape” as per HillBuzz (a staunch supporter of both the Chicago GOP and Hillary Clinton’s 2008 campaign), and a single tentative/moderate level e-mail complaint that was actually addressed within days to the satisfaction of all including the e-mail sender morphed into an alleged “cover-up.” As of June 2010, the woman who drafted the original e-mail was absolutely baffled as to why her complaint was still an issue, as she–along with the CYRs–had considered the matter resolved in July of 2009.
The Chicago GOP with the help of HillBuzz continued to whip this up into a frenzy, and the rest is history.
The Rose is chastened; the original e-mail sender is baffled; the Chicago GOP revels in their petty triumph before their ineptitude kills GOP chances in Chicago for this cycle; HillBuzz feeds his narcissism; and the Democratic Machine laughs all the way to November.

I’ve known Jeremy for years–since he was a teen still attending UofI in Chicago.
Anyone who knows him will tell you that he’s always been “demonstrative”. However, this is the first time I’ve ever heard anyone complain. (As a matter of fact, he’s not the only one who has tickled the back of someone’s neck–in public at a CYR event. Those of us who have known each other for quite some time actually do that as a greeting similar to patting someone you might not know as well on the back or shaking their hand even if you’re met them before.)
Having said that. I’m sure he’ll handle this well through to a valid and logical conclusion, as evidenced by the fact that he’s resigned, which was probably the right thing for him to do under the circumstances and until this has been “investigated” and resolved properly.

And after reading Anon 2:34’s comments, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be surprised by some of the politics behind all of this–pertaining to the various GOP groups and “younger players” that might have jumped on this. Say what you will about Jeremy, but he did do an amazing job in building up, promoting, and leading the CYRs–first as an informal later and then as an “official” leader. It’s no secret that many have envied his accomplishments and the attention he’s received for same.
They’re all a talented, aggressive, and extremely ambitious bunch of young ‘uns, who very well could have gladly added some gasoline to a fire that had already started.

As for Gerson/Swiss, they are certainly envious of the job the current group has done. Someone mentioned the 5k from the League- 5k is a quarter’s worth of fundraising for Eloise.

A sex scandal? In Illinois? Coming to light by the Democrats? Nice diversionary tactic so people pay less attention to the corrupt, inept leadership of the Dems who under Madigan, Jones, and now Cullerton have lead Illinois into the cesspool of financial and moral bankruptcy. Get rid of the idiots on both sides, and bring sunlight and honesty to the Illinois governmental process.

I am probably gonna get crucified for this comment, but I don’t see a very important key issue here….at what point did this woman say the words NO or STOP?
If she never told Rose NO or STOP, then it is very likely that he considered this to be flirting and she was receptive. The only real issue I see here is holding her cell phone and trying to convince her to stick around, but really if that is the worst that happened, then what the hell would any publication waste the ink to write about this?
