Friday White Sox blogging
Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller White Sox ace closer Shingo Takatsu has been getting a little flak lately from some of the talk radio guys who think that he won’t be able to repeat his fantastic performance from last year. He’s been through the league twice now, and batters, they say, are figuring him out. Maybe, but I love the guy. And it’s always fun when he takes the field. A loud and sustained “gong” is played over the PA system as soon as his feet touch the playing surface. Last year, the Sox took the cheesy route by running footage of a Godzilla fight on the diamond screen. Whatever. It was still fun. He didn’t do too well on Tuesday night, when I was at the park. But Ozzie seems to have confidence in him. That’s good enough for me. Closer Shingo Takatsu repaid the faith shown in him by manager Ozzie Guillen by pitching a scoreless ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox edged the Detroit Tigers 4-3 on Thursday. Go Sox.

Question for Springfield types
Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller What are your experiences with either Sprint PCS or Cingular Wireless in the Springfield area? I’m looking at switching carriers and the phone I want only uses those two services.

Question of the day
Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller What specific financial or administrative reforms would you like to see the governor and his agencies implement to save money? Also, is the administration doing things that are wasteful, and what would you do to change this? And, please, let’s keep it practical. “Firing all state employees,” would be a juvenile suggestion that wouldn’t bring anything to the debate. Update: I knew I’d get some good comments on this one, but I’ve been amazed at the excellence of the suggestions. Keep them coming.

Sun-Times catches up
Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller I wrote in the Capitol Fax last week (I think it was last week, may have been two weeks ago) that Mayor Daley’s comment about abandoning his pursuit of a Chicago casino was way overplayed by the Chicago media. His lobbyists, I reported, are still working on it and will also oppose any casino expansion that doesn’t include a site for Chicago. Buried way down at the end of a Sun-Times article today about CTA funding was this little nugget: Earlier this month, Daley said he couldn’t care less whether Gov. Blagojevich approves a land-based, government-owned casino in downtown Chicago. The mayor said he has only two funding priorities for the spring session: CTA and schools.

Rockford mayor offered job…
Friday, Apr 22, 2005 - Posted by Rich Miller But he’s not talking about it. Outgoing Mayor Doug Scott is contemplating a job offer from his friend Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Like I said before, I hope they don’t stick him in some agency job where his advice is ignored forever and is only contacted when the budget office wants more money (which is always).
