Another Lane Evans open thread

Monday, Jun 5, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

Bizarre news on the Lane Evans front this past weekend.

U.S. Rep. Lane Evans, who announced in March he will not run again because of his struggles with Parkinson’s disease, is fighting attempts by his two brothers to be named his permanent limited guardians.

An attorney representing Evans says the congressman’s health is good enough and that guardianship isn’t needed.

“I think, for the most part, Lane is well enough to do just about everything,” Arthur Winstein, a Rock Island attorney hired by Evans, said Friday.

The 54-year-old Rock Island Democrat is scheduled to return to Washington on Monday and plans to return to the House floor when Congress reconvenes Tuesday, an Evans spokesman said last week.

Brothers Doyle and Steven Evans were granted temporary limited guardianship over the congressman’s affairs on April 17, but that is due to expire June 16.

On Tuesday, Rock Island County Judge Alan Blackwood ordered East Moline attorney John McGehee to represent the congressman’s interests as his brothers seek to gain permanent limited guardianship. The judge also said Lane Evans can obtain an independent medical exam.

McGehee, appointed by the judge to be a guardian ad litem in the case, said Lane Evans opposes his brothers’ bid to gain permanent guardianship.

“My job as guardian ad litem is to look at all the issues and see if a guardian should or shouldn’t be appointed,” McGehee said. “I’m kind of the eyes and ears of the court.”

What else have you heard out there?

This is a personal issue between family members. I feel badly for Mr. Evans and his health conditions, but the area needs leadership that he was never capable of providing. I am far more concerned with the future representation of this District than i am with one family’s personal soap opera.

Zinga knows nothing of business/ economic development, so she is no better for us than Lane Evans.

Hare would be more lost than Lane or Zinga.
Even as a life-long Republican, I would prefer to have Schweibert, or Sullivan, if for nothing other than a Representative that appreciates and understands something about business/ economic development.

shows how bad the politics are in the 17th. evans health condition now reinforces the comments made by zinga during the 04 campaing. the dems looking for the nomination would probaly like to get to issues of the district, but keep getting distracted. what should be a solid democratic district is now in play according to republicna sources. so much for the theory tossed around by doemcrats on the ineptness of the republican party in illinois. looks like they have a competing party.

This thing’s over. Hare gets nominated tomorrow. Time to look forward.

Hare is the only chance that Zinga has.

I don’t like living in a Congressional District that has Democratic leadership similar to the old Soviet Union. The entire party needs to get a wake up call and get voted out. They are living in the 1950s.

Still considered a horse race between Sullivan and Hare, with Boland running up on the inside in a close third place and the Rock Island Mayor not too far behind. First order of business, after announcing a winner, will be uniting all Democrats in the 17th behind their new nominee.
And if the winner is Sullivan, Lane Evans should be the first public official to congratulate the State Senator.

Lane was at a Memorial Service in the QC last week and he looked better than he had in a long time. He is supposed to be going back to DC next week.

I saw Lane at my place of work about 3 weeks ago. He is speaking better and he is deffinitly able to do things on his own. It is bitter sweet. I hate to see him go, but I am happy to see him go on his own terms. Hopefully he will be able to see the house go to the Democrats before he leaves.

  9. - NI80 - Monday, Jun 5, 06 @ 6:00 pm:

This decision should be completely Lane’s. He may not be well enough to act as our Congressman anymore, but that does not necessarily carry over into his personal life. I cringe at the idea that Andrea Zinga could ever wind up in the US House…the woman has practically no platform and quite honestly, she is just not the type of person I would ever want to see elected to this spot, or any position.

  10. - WWW.zingawins.COM - Monday, Jun 5, 06 @ 6:48 pm:

Cringe all you want. Zinga has the name ID and if you haven’t decided to go to her website her platform is right there for all to read.

Come on, ‘Zinga has name recognition’ - in the Primary, when she was THE candidate in the previous cycle, 58% of her own party voted against her! Her own Party does not like her, Independents and soft-Dem’s certainly do not. She has serious issues come November. Heck, just wait, the FEC reports out in July will tell you if she has any chance…if she can not scare up a minimum of $220,000 by that report - given that this is now an open seat and given that the Democrats do not even have a candidate…the gig is up.

  12. - Craig - Tuesday, Jun 6, 06 @ 2:27 pm:

Phil is the best choice, and the committeemen saw that. To say Zinga is a better candidate just because she won a primary by 200 votes is assine. Look at the issues. See who is more in tune with the 17th district. It sure as hell isn’t Andrea Zinga. Vote on the issues. Vote for the better person. Vote Phil Hare for Congress 2006!

  13. - bigfellaphil - Tuesday, Jun 6, 06 @ 2:33 pm:

You heard it hear first Hare is the winner
