Giuliani comes to town

Wednesday, Jul 12, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

Rudy Giuliani was in town to help JBT yesterday. The media drools over this guy as much or more than McCain (and he’ll be here soon), so there was plenty of coverage.

· Tribune:

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday defended his socially moderate views, and those of GOP governor candidate Judy Baar Topinka, against conservative criticism that they are out of sync with Republican Party values.

“I am who I am,” Giuliani, who is exploring a 2008 presidential bid, said during a Topinka campaign appearance at Benedictine University in Lisle. “There are a lot of things about me that somebody who’s conservative might think were very, very good, and there might be some things they don’t think are as good.” […]

“There is nobody out there who is an arbiter of who is a Republican, who is not, what is a Republican, what is not, or where a Republican is in the spectrum of Republicanism historically,” Topinka said.

· Sun-Times:

“We urge Mayor Giuliani while he is in town raising money for Judy Baar Topinka to persuade her to protect Illinois families and support taking dangerous assault weapons off our streets,” Blagojevich spokeswoman Sheila Nix said in a statement.

Giuliani shrugged off the differences between he and Topinka on assault weapons, saying only that “the Republican party is a very big party, a very broad party.”

But he took a shot at the ongoing federal probe into hiring in Blagojevich’s administration, noting “a government free of investigations would be a good thing to have in this state.”

· Daily Herald:

Giuliani ended by urging law enforcement and fire department representatives at the session to support Topinka because “she’ll be a really tough governor.”

“Never mess with Momma,” Topinka added.

Hey what happened to the “I love guns Blago” that was at the Sparta Shooting Complex.Another foot in mouth for the Gov.

I read the “Don’t mess with Mama” line in the paper this morning and died laughing. I love Giuliani, he is my guy and I am sure hearing Topinka say, “Don’t mess with Mama,” would be a lot different from seeing it in the paper, but it was just wierd. No matter. Still good publicity for Topinka. And still more oddness from the Blagojevich campaign, “We urge Mayor Giuliani while he is in town raising money for Judy Baar Topinka to persuade her to protect Illinois families and support taking dangerous assault weapons off our streets.” I hate when politicians do that. Somebody is here campaigning and the Rod people start acting like total dopes. Think they are scared?

guiliani’s only worth $100,000 ??? are you kidding?

i sure hope they shot some good footage, because $100,000 is pitiful…

Did Rudy forget the case of his beloved Bernard Kerik? You know the one who became a national hero? You know the one who was appointed by the Bush administration to head up Homeland Security? You know the one WHO PLEADED GUILTY TO ACCEPTING GIFTS FROM A NEW JERSEY FIRM WITH ALLEGED MOB TIES?

Lets be honest, if its bad for Rod, if its bad for Alexi, its also bad for Rudy, afterall he hired the guy. I doubt he did not know that the guy was a little crooked. Let’s not be hypocrites. . .oh I forgot we are talking about the GOP, the party that specializes in hypocrisy.

Wow, wndy. “..the party that specializes in hypocrisy.”

You just have to stop taking quotes aimed at your boss and changing a word or two to suit your political needs. Of course, there is nothing hypocritical about that.

  6. - wndycty - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 8:11 am:

LOL, I have screen name and I’m getting called out by “Anonymous.” Would you like a list of GOP hypocrisy?

I can go on, but I might be accused of being part of some coordinated campaign.

  7. - The Conservative - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 8:32 am:

Nice to see Rudy in town, He did a wonderful job of fighting the Mob in NYC, he handled 911 as a true hero. However I cannot support his bid for President nor will I even look at McCain. I respect his having been a prisoner of war, however, I have no respect for his social views. This being said makes it easy to skip Judy in November when I vote for the rest of the Republican ticket.

  8. - bored now too - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 8:59 am:

Never mess with mamma? Her making that stupid comment is why I won’t vote for either one of these mopes.

When Rod debates her he should just let her talk, she’ll turn voters off and hand Rod a second term.

  9. - Hobson's Choice - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 9:19 am:

Q: Who’s going to beat Rod in November?

    A: Yo mama.

  10. - not THAT conservative - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 9:36 am:

Conservative said “this being said it makes it easy to skip Judy in November when I vote for the rest of the Republican ticket.”

Who?! If you don’t respect Judy, McCain, or Rudy for their social views, then who can you vote for on the Illinois Republican ticket other than Joe Birkett and he is linked to Judy. I would just be interested in knowing who on the Illinois Republican ticket you think agrees with your “social views.”

  11. - Reddbyrd - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 9:48 am:

The Mamma line is a keeper — for the dumber than a box of rox award
Rudy has his hand is so many contracts, miking the 911 moment for millions, that he will not make it to the starting gate.
Now let’s sit back and wait the next gaffe What will she blurt out at the McCain event?
“Ill POW that Grod right out office” f

from an issues canvass in will county, i understand that the pastor of one of the bigger churches in the area will be advising his congregation to vote for neither major party candidate. the conservative is hardly alone here…

  13. - DOWNSTATE - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 10:17 am:

AAhhh it was so nice to have an American hero like Rudy G. to come in and next is war hero John Wayne oh sorry I meant John McCain oh well same cut of the cloth. Now let me see and Blago has who?Well since he gave Louis Farrakhan’s right hand adviser a job maybe old Louis will stop by and say a few words.Sort of a memorial of a guy going down in flames.

  14. - DOWNSTATE - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 10:23 am:

Conservative shows us your AROD for governor button. You have been harping that same tune since before the primary.

  15. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 10:32 am:

Having these people come to Illinois is a nice photo op and a chance to raise some bucks. Am I supposed to suddenly like JBT because McCain, Rudy, or Bush says she is great? Should I vote for Rod because Clinton or Kennedy come do a favor? These are one day shots. What happens the rest of the time counts. Neither one really grabs me.

“Don’t mess with Mama”, goofy throw off line that Jon Stewart would make work. That box of rox must be chock full of stupid stuff pols say everyday.

  16. - Atom Heart Mother, bh - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 10:37 am:

Okay, she might be good looking, but I’m still not voting for her.

    What a sad day,

I didn’t think churches could keep their tax-exempt status making political statements like this. Well, I guess there are some churches where you can make a statement like this and no one will question you……….

  18. - Levois - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 11:08 am:

I like Rudy. He seemed like a very tough Mayor in NYC. Can’t say the same for Bloomberg.

  19. - Southern Illinois Democrat - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 12:02 pm:

    Jechislo

I have heard preachers get up and speak about candidates. They wont say vote for one or the other but rather tell you where each one stands on issues like gay rights and abortion. They also have pamphlets to hand out that show positions on these right wing issues. So, I agree that some conservatives will skip this race. In my office, several conservatives have stated they will either not vote at all or skip voting in the Govs race. Some people hold fast to their beliefs and will not budge. Is it right or wrong…thats their call not mine.

  20. - bored now - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 12:13 pm:

let’s be clear here: jechislo has read more into this than i would. the word advising was in quotes on the response form. perhaps only the canvasser knows precisely why. i would not assume that such a minister would be doing so from a pulpit, that would be speculative…

  21. - not real pleased - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 3:30 pm:

I would like to support Topinka, but I absolutely can NOT stand the “fools” she is bringing in to support her.

  22. - Niles Township - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 4:01 pm:

Might anyone bother to think that Rudy and McCain are coming in to town to help themselves, and could really care less about JBT.

  23. - Washington - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 5:39 pm:

Drools is right! The 4:30pm WMAQ-TV news was a total celeb-fest for Giuliani. The reporter and both anchors were all dribbling unconscionably over the story.

  24. - tiny dancer - Wednesday, Jul 12, 06 @ 10:59 pm:

    JBT is big time now.

She brought a whole $1.2m with THE PRESIDENT. I can’t wait to see how she makes the most of being governor. Maybe if she’s elected he won’t contradict her claims that IL is doing bad economically.

And wait - a visit from the Prince of the City. She took him out for lunch and came back with a wooping $100k. Way to go! Maybe she can take him out to dinner with that in Manhattan. But he might refuse because he thinks people that don’t ban assault weapons are slaves to special interest.

    Never mess with Momma!

  25. - Beowulf - Thursday, Jul 13, 06 @ 10:18 am:

Is it possible that Rudy was in Illinois anyway on some other personal business? It was portrayed to the media and public as though Rudy came to Illinois for the sole purpose of helping his “dear friend” JBT. I don’t think so. If I was Rudy and I had to be in Illinois anyway, I would make a pit stop to help JBT so I could win points with Mr. Rove & Mr. Mehlman, I could also write off the expenses that I incurred for my trip to Illinois for personal reasons, or I could simply use my campaign funds for seemingly legitimate political reasons rather than their true personal reasons. Rich, I will bet you that I am correct in my assessment of “the real reason” Rudy was in Illinois. It wasn’t Judy.
