Question of the day

Monday, Aug 7, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

I’m curious about some of your technological preferences.

1) Do you use an RSS reader? If so, which one?

2) Can you access the Internet and e-mail on your cellphone/PDA? How often do you do it, and for what purpose? What sort of mobile phone do you own?

3) What’s your favorite website for national news?

4) Do you still buy “dead trees” newspapers, or do you read your news online now?

5) How often do you visit my website?

  1. - Rich Miller - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 8:41 am:

    I’ll get it started.

    1) Bloglines.

    2) Yes, and I find myself doing it more and more when I’m out of the office, particularly to check on comments posted here. I have a Treo 650.

    3) I use Google News rather than go to an invididual website.

    4) Almost never, unless I’m on a train, plane or dining alone.

    5) Too much. lol

  2. - state worker - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 8:48 am:

    1. Blogs

    2. No, Nextel is my cell

    3. I still read the paper for national news (especially the Sunday paper)

    4. During the week, I read the newspaper online.

    5. I visit your website everyday (except Sunday – nothing new on Sunday and sometimes not on Saturday either). I really enjoy your website (and column), I see a lot of wrong being done since I work for a state agency (20 years) and I can get the frustration out by writing about it here. Thank you.

    1. No - tried it but decided it wasn’t worth the bandwidth consumed.

    2. Yes but never. I have a Moto Razr now but I used to work for Nokia in advanced products. It was quickly apparent to me that wireless net access was addictive. (I’ve got enough problems with poker and solitaire on my PDA.)

    4. Online only; I do pay for some advanced subscriptions.

    1.) Huh? What’s that?
2.) Yes, just for checking my yahoo account or a sports score if I’m away from a computer for an extended period of time.
3.) Multiple favorites - can’t have just one source! NY Times and WSJ are tied for #1
4.) Rarely buy a dead-tree paper. Only when traveling and have no access to computer. Otherwise, it’s all about online news.
5.) I check this site once a day, typically after scanning the Trib and Sun-Times websites in the AM.

  23. - Skeeter - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:10 am:

I’m curious about some of your technological preferences.

    1) Do you use an RSS reader? If so, which one? No. Not really clear on how they work.

    2) Can you access the Internet and e-mail on your cellphone/PDA? How often do you do it, and for what purpose? What sort of mobile phone do you own?

No, partly because I don’t want to be bothered with e-mail when I am not at my desk.

    3) What’s your favorite website for national news?

    politicalwire.com
I also check out CNN, and headlines from the New York Times and Washington Post.

    4) Do you still buy “dead trees” newspapers, or do you read your news online now?

Chicago Tribune, which I tolerate. I don’t think it is a quality paper, but it is better than nothing. I note that for quality, it is far superior to Chicago’s local television news. I have a few friends who are reporters, but I only watch televised news on election night. For me, a fire on the West Side does not really qualify as “breaking news” unless there have been multiple fatalities. The local news stations apparently disagree with me on that point.

I note that the other major source for news is magazines like The Atlantic and The New Yorker, which I read almost cover to cover. The Atlantic in particular has some outstanding articles.

    5) How often do you visit my website?

Too often. When I move from one assignnment to another it clears my mind a bit.

  24. - Robbie - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:22 am:

1)no, but i do use feed2js to create rss feeds for websites i maintain
2)i have a crappy cell phone. i dont want to pay extra for all that crap.
    3)cnn.com
4)i get my local paper, the galesburg register mail, though i read the headliens at work online.
5)pretty much all day long while im at work, occasionally on the weekends

  25. - Little Egypt - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:24 am:

    1. I’m technologically challenged. Don’t know what that is.

    2. No.

    3. CNN

    4. I subscribe to my local newspaper on-line. Don’t have any papers to throw away weekly but once in a while do miss the supplements.

    5. Depends on how interesting your postings are. I’m getting a little tired of the slowness of the Feds though so I might take a break until closer to the election. Don’t really care to read Blogo’s press release of the hour.

  26. - Levois - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:28 am:

    1) I use primarily My Yahoo.
    2) Never have and it costs money.
    3) I have a few of them. I will check Fox News but my favorite website for that is Brain-Terminal.com
    4) I’ll still read the Tribune or the Sun-Times or I may check out a lesser read paper like N’Digo or a neighborhood newspaper.
    5) I will check everyday as long as I have internet access.

  27. - Anonymous - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:47 am:

    1) Nope

    2) Yes, but only occasionally. I’ve got a Motorola V220 that isn’t the greatest for surfing the net. I get to upgrade in September, so I’ll see what is best for the least amount of shekels then.

    3) Wall Street Journal. I also like the coverage that Glenn Reynolds does over at Instapundit.

    4) Tribune. If I take the train into downtown, Sun-Times. Other than that, I read ‘em online.

    5) Everyday during the week. Weekends not so much because comments are shut off.

  28. - Skeeeter - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:49 am:

I love that Skeeter couldn’t just answer the questions, had to give his views on each topic, classic.

  29. - zatoichi - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 11:55 am:

    1) Bloglines

    2) Hated a beeper and avoid a cell phone except for regular phone calls. PDA/phone Internet is just another place for ads. At a desk everyday. Generic Motorola.

    3) IE or Netscape. Enough headline pop up.

    4) Bought Sunday ChiTrib as I moved around the country. May not be great but better than most and kept me tied to a Chicago orientation. Daily local paper and Sunday SJR. Online news is a pain boring. Right up there with electronic books. Ugh. Scanning a real paper is somehow relaxing. Electroninc is “work”.

    5) Far too much. Gotta Miller jones.

  30. - HANKSTER - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 12:12 pm:

  40. - Backyard Conservative - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 4:11 pm:

    1.No

    2. No,just an LG cellphone, but I imagine I’ll trade up eventually.

    3. http://realclearpolitics.com/ and also Google News.

    4. Pretty much online all the time, tho get the paper for the rest of the family.

    5. Just about every day.

  41. - Saluki Yay-hoo - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 5:28 pm:

    1) Nope

    2) N/A

    3) Formerly Slate (I liked their daily summary/analysis of news from major papers), now HuffPo, but always looking for something better. Too much pop stuff on FluffPo, blogs are often snarky, smug and predictable, but the remaining 33 percent feeds my need when it comes to browsing breaking national news. But I’m much more innarested in following local and state news anyway. I prefer the variety of news feeds found on the right column of Capfax.

    4) Rarely buy, but am always happy to pick up whatever is free, something about the tactile nature of holding paper and ink in my hands. Yet, I let my local paper subscription expire mainly because I got tired of the papers piling up and the lack of solid local and state coverage. Too much canned and often chopped up copy which can easily be bested with a quick trip to the Net.

    5) Usually first thing in the morning and then later in the evening to catch up on comments.

  42. - Jeff - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 5:37 pm:

    1. I use Google IG.
    2. I could get on the internet, but it’d cost me extra on my somewhat older Nokia.
    3. I read the NY Times, Google News, and a news-oriented message board.
    4. I read most everything online, but I do subscribe to The Economist.
    5. Very rarely. I read the daily fax, but I find it to be s far too critical of Blagojevich and too easy on Republicans.

  43. - angry and outraged - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 5:55 pm:

    1) No
    2) I have an older Nokia (Cingular) I could get to the internet but besides the cost my phone is just to keep in touch with the kids and emergencies.
    3) Google News-for particular stories I am following I get Google news alerts.
    4) I read the news strictly online no paper.
    5) I am on Capitol Fax several times a day

  44. - Marta Elena - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 6:25 pm:

1.) I check your website for any stories I might have missed on the right side of the screen.
2.) No - not sure if I want to be that connected to news when I’m in the field anyway.
3.) Associated Press, CNN, and FOX
4.) I partake in the daily CLIPs in our office. We skim all the papers - except NW Indiana Times, Chicago Defender and Daily Southtown, and the Star, which I can only get online for now.

I read the actual newspapers for both the Sun-Times & Tribune daily and the Tribune on Sundays. You can’t get the pictures online - and sometimes those tell story.

5.) About 2-3 times during the week.

  45. - Nick Name - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 8:20 pm:

    1) Bloglines lets me read blogs, mailing lists, parcel tracking, etc in a single long web page.

    2) My bottom-of-the-line tracfone has free incoming text, so I use it now and then for incoming e-mail, such as flight delay notifications.

    2) I cannot, but my wife can on her cellphone. She does not use it very often.

    5) Almost every day.

  47. - No Wonder - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 9:22 pm:

A lot of Fox News and Drudge in there and even a Washington Times.

  48. - Roy Slade - Monday, Aug 7, 06 @ 10:14 pm:

    4) I still have to have my sunday paper. I read five newspapers online. (Sun-Times, Tribune, SJR, St. Louis Post, & Belleville newspaper.

    5) I am (was?) a “posse member”, thus I am here almost every morning before work and most evenings. Man, I have to get a life!

  49. - Nick Name - Tuesday, Aug 8, 06 @ 6:04 pm:

Some of the responses to question #1 remind me of Phil Hartman’s Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer bit where he said “Your strange words frighten and confuse me.”

Using Bloglines is easier than falling in love.

  50. - YNM - Tuesday, Aug 8, 06 @ 10:55 pm:

    1. Bloglines … and myYahoo

    2. Yes … daily and way too often … email, fantasy baseball, blogging, news, and often on road trips to find restaurants and the like … it’s a Treo 600

    3. hmmm … no favorites … often visit CNN, but also use Google News

    4. sometimes on road trips buy the paper, but almost everything electronically now.

    5. a few times a week.
