Morning shorts

Thursday, Aug 10, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

· Editorial: One has to wonder why the General Assembly even bothers passing a budget.

· Sneed: Mayor Daley and AFL-CIO President John Sweeney had a hush-hush meeting in a private suite at the Drake Hotel on Tuesday, during which Sweeney presented Hizzoner with a letter urging him not to veto the controversial big box ordinance. The letter was reportedly signed by the heads of all national AFL-CIO affiliates.

· Blagojevich mulls law on morning after pill

· “In a symbolic changing of the guard, the Chicago Urban League appointed the communications director to Gov. Rod Blagojevich as its new president and CEO on Wednesday, making her the first woman to lead the 90-year-old social service and civil rights organization.”

· Commerce chief: Illinois economy in good shape

· Ash borer ‘battle‘ intensifies

· Muir:

During the back-slapping and glad-handing at the gala celebration in Marion last week, I heard one official make the comment that the announcement that Southern Illinois has landed a professional baseball team is a sign that “we’ve made it.”

Let’s get one thing straight today about that phrase “we’ve made it,” OK?

When long-overdue school construction projects are completed, when health care providers can quit refinancing their homes to meet payroll, when pay-to-play politics stops, and when Southern Illinois is not ranked dead last in 15 out of 16 poverty indicators among Midwest states, I’ll be the first one to jump on the “we’ve-made-it” bandwagon.

Until then, I’ll take my baseball straight up with no politics on the side.

Congratulations to Cheryl Jackson. Blago has lost a great women.

  2. - Chinaman - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 9:13 am:

The money for the Emerald Ash Borer is federal money. So far the state has contributed nothing. State officials can stop patting themselves on the back. When home owners figure out the 7 million is only a drop in the bucket between Il. Ws. and they will be forced to bear the expense of removel of infected trees from their own property. And they will be forced. Things are going to get nasty. But thats ok we’ll have baseball in southern Il.

Muir is right. Political pandering doesn’t deliver the goods in a state with a fiscally busted budget. It is all hairspray and smiles.

  4. - Little Egypt - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 9:40 am:

GoverNOT Hairdo doesn’t get it. The people of southern Illinois may have been born at night - - - but it was not LAST night. We know when there is an attempt to buy votes but it won’t work this time. Perhaps when you pay the nursing homes, doctors, clinics, and hospitals what is due them, then we’ll talk about votes. But not until then ELVIS.

  5. - Pat Hickey - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 10:29 am:

Sweeney couldn’t keep his organization intact and he is lecturing Daley about politics? Come On.

  6. - Just Because - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 12:48 pm:

I have see read and heard it all. We all know the gov is just Wrong. Border line criminal. We have seen the donations, the contracts, false hiring ect. The part I really don’t understand is why the legislator’s lets him get away with it? One day each and everyone of them will need to be re-elected. We the people should see to it that all of them who stood by quietly should be voted out! thank you

  7. - R.I.P. McMurphee - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 1:26 pm:

Hickey’s right about Sweeney, but the most interesting tidbit in the Sneed column today relates to Hizzoner’s peevish exchange with CFL honcho Dennis Gannon. What’s that all about?

  8. - Disgusted - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 10:25 pm:

Just Because: I’ve been saying precisely what you said for years. I don’t get it either. What can he do to them - reject the pork they want? Their constituents would rather have an honest person taking care of their interests than yes-men whose lips are permanently puckered while they line their own pockets.

  9. - Anon. - Thursday, Aug 10, 06 @ 10:31 pm:

I wonder how long it will take for IDOT to award Chicago Urban League a huge contract.

  10. - Insider - Friday, Aug 11, 06 @ 1:25 am:

Urban league is a joke. Have them show stats on what they have contributed. They only look out out for a designated section of the population… reverse discrimination.
