My niece and I walked in the Twilight parade last Thursday, in support of my favorite R. candidate. We had an absolute blast passing out favors to the crowd. Everyone we saw was smiling and having a good time. We were worn out at the end of the parade, but it was well worth the fun we had. If I get the chance, I’ll walk the parade again next year.

Meeting Glenn Poshard - oh what could of been…

  3. - values matter - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 9:47 am:

Watching a red-faced Mayor Daley work the crowd on his way off the stage yesterday. Daley for Governor.

  4. - Larry Mullholland - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 10:04 am:

It was the mid 80’s. The Beach Boys still had some talent left. We were on the track which is standing room only. (The best place to be apart of a concert at the fair) About mid way through the concert a heavy rain storm drenched us all. The majority of the crowd stayed. The beach boys and the fans seemed to kick it up a notch. We danced, we sang & we partied, The Beach Boys came out for a third encore…..by the end we were all covered in mud and had a wonderful experience. Oh How I would love to be transported back in time for the party once again.

    Leaving

  6. - Captain America - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 10:45 am:

I am all politica all the time - it’s the only reason i attend the State Fair.

I observed virtually the entire media corp abandoning the Governor’s speech at the County Chairman’s Breakfast and scurrying outside when Obama arrived on the premises of the Crown Plaza.

I also enjoyed watching the crowd react to Obama before, during and after his speech at the County Chair’s Breakfast. It’s pretty incredible. I don’t understand the naysayer’s on this blog who don’t perceive that Obams is the “real thing” - a devastating combination of intellect, rhetorical skills, and charisma.

I thanked Senator Don Harmon for his objection to Speaker/Chairman Madigan’s resolution to make Todd Stroger’s nomination unanimous at the Cook County Democratic Party slatemaking session. Making the nomination unanimous, given the whole set of underlying circumstances, seemed completely hypocritical to me.

On the lighter side,I don’t know if anyone else was present at the rally on the Director’s Lawn, but there was a really spectacular blond in rather revealing attire. She wasn’t my type - I prefer intellectual, political types/power babes: Dawn Clark Netsch; Jan Schakowsky; Julie Hamos; Sara Feigenholtz; the late Penny Severns, etc.. But you couldn’t help noticing this woman and wonder who she was and why she was at the rally. I tapped her on the arm while she was being introduced to a state legislator and told her that Committeman X would like her autograph. She gave me a scornful glance and turned her attention elsewhere.

Meant to introoduce myself to Rich Miller as a relatively new blogger/newcomer to The Capital Fax blog, but he diappeared like the rest of the media around the time that Obama arrived.

  7. - B Hicks - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 10:59 am:

    I saw her, Captain.

  8. - Anon - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 11:05 am:

I remember a few years back i saw a poor girl fall out of a golf cart and roll across the walking path. I think she was drunk because she landed pretty hard but jumped right up and got back in the cart. It was hilarious.

  9. - Anon - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 11:37 am:

From the state fair four years ago:

“I don’t plan to get into any criticism of Blagojevich,” Madigan said. “I could do that. I could talk about his indiscretions. But I’m not going to do that.”

  10. - Marie - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 11:53 am:

Politically? 1978. I went to the fair every day and every night. As a secretary on the Democratic staff, I had a little gig working the Dem tent a couple hours a day. It wasn’t necessarily a young woman’s dream job - handing out rulers, pencils, shopping bags, and bumper stickers, but it was fun. I sigh at the memory. My favorite thing, though, was the parking pass just inside Gate 11. Loved that parking pass. Miss that parking pass.

Personally? Many years later, taking my daughters to the fair, riding the Flying Bobs over and over, wasting more money on the ring toss and the frog hammer hop than I care to recall.

Larry Mullholland, I too was at that Beach Boys concert. Other memorable concerts included K.C. and the Sunshine Band, Willie Nelson (several times), Kenny Rogers.

  11. - anon - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 11:59 am:

Seeing so many talented dems at the Director’s lawn and a massive crowd, diverse and reflective of our population, made me smile. It was agreat day for dems.

  12. - Woe is us - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 12:06 pm:

Rich, did your golf cart really get towed?

  13. - Squideshi - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 12:23 pm:

I enjoyed handing out fliers at the Green Party tent. People are really excited about the Rich Whitney campaign! Oh wait… There wasn’t a Green Party tent, because the party is too busy fighting off frivilous objections to its nominating petition, made by the Democratic Machine. It is nice to see, however, that Blagojevich and Madigan can make it out to the fair–it must be convienent to have the party’s Treasurer, Chicago lawyer Mike Kasper, working “pro-bono” to fight all of the dirty legal battles. It’s just a shame that the Illinois taxpayer has to pay a couple dozen State Board of Elections employees full-time for a few weeks to go over objections that were made at random and that are completely without merit. I mean, why would Illinois voters care about hundreds of thousands of wasted taxpayer dollars, right? Especially when all they’re trying to do is bog down the Greens and take away your choices at the ballot box. It’s just Democracy right? So what?

  14. - Rich Miller - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 12:25 pm:

“Woe is us,” I didn’t have a golf cart yesterday. Others’ carts were towed, however, and the issue was eventually resolved.

  15. - Craig - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 12:28 pm:

I saw something you could only see at the Illinois State Fair, milking a cow for a dollar. That was just yesterday, but it was still a nice memory. Also, getting to hang out with the Obama staff for the day, and Phil gave the speech I have heard him give.

  18. - Anon - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 2:48 pm:

The Honey Ice Cream from the Illinois Honey Bee Workers Association in the Illinois Building!

  19. - Common Sense in Illinois - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 3:44 pm:

Jim Skilbeck’s annual golfcart race around the track, closing Sunday night around midnight, most of us pretty hammered. President Reagan’s visit in 1985 or 86; Jim Thompson on the giant slide, The Havanah Ducks, and Chicago concerts with my new bride and a bottle of wine.

  20. - Star Struck - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 4:47 pm:

When Obama was at the fair I think he looked at my general direction and smiled at me, or at least I think it was me. Unbelievable!

  21. - Disgusted - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 5:58 pm:

The huge fireworks a couple of years ago (I think it was a fair anniversary or maybe the Millenium) They were long and fabulous!!!

Also seeing my grandchildren holding baby bunnies i the FFA tent, one of the first places we always go to, along with the other animal places.

  22. - Hay Edwards - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 6:08 pm:

Best memory was doing the boat safety class at the DNR (or whatever it was called then) conservation world. They also had a snake/lizard handler in that section, which was always a nice quiet respite from the craziness of the midway and the exhibits

  23. - anon again - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 8:39 pm:

Taking in the Fifth Dimension in the early seventies. The two ladies in that group were to use todays jargon ” hot ” !!

  25. - Evil Terry - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 10:21 pm:

I second the motion of the golf cart races. I also miss the Miller Tent (located by the grandstand)- with Deluxery playing every other night. Man- there really hasn’t been any good state fairs since Thompson. :)

  26. - Peaches - Thursday, Aug 17, 06 @ 10:52 pm:

Iron Butterfly at the Grandstand (maybe 1970?)

  27. - Criminal Enterprise Called Illinois - Sunday, Aug 20, 06 @ 2:23 am:

Partying with Jim Skilbeck and company backstage on the track - and the hot tub - in 1987. Jimmy in his bathrobe, up all hours of the night, state troopers that were so much fun, H.B. Koplowitz’s State Fair reporting. How I miss Jim Skilbeck, God rest his sweet soul! Those were truly the days! And, oh yeah, accidentally driving my car on the road my first time through the fair because I didn’t know any better! Thinking…why are there so many people walking around on this road? They could get hurt! Too funny….strange and fast times at State Fair High in the late 1980’s…we had a ball!
