Whoever is elected is likely to serve two terms so Obama has to maintain his momentum through 8 years as vice president, during which anything can happen nationally or internationally. Given the current anti-Republican national climate, this could be his best and only shot. Of course, he has to get past Hillary and then John McCain, both formidable opponents. Hillary may not go quietly, despite rumors that she would step aside if Obama decided to run. And if the world security situation worsens, McCain would have huge appeal vs. an untested and youthful opponent. I agree with the commenter who said Obama’s ascent from state senator to Senator Rockstar and Presidential Candidate in Waiting must rankle with our Blago.
