Morning shorts

Tuesday, Nov 14, 2006 - Posted by Rich Miller

* A longtime television news reporter started Monday as senior adviser to Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

* Editorial: State must close school revenue gap

* Atrios makes a very good point: I think the big issue here is the perpetual confusion of “independent” and “swing voters” with some concept of “centrist” or “moderate” which is generally put out by the press, when in reality these people are often low information voters who are likely to vote for someone “who knows what s/he stands for” instead of someone who has mushy middle distinctions without differences policy positions.

* Editorial: In all the hoopla about Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s re-election and the Democrats’ dominance nationally, many people may have missed another politically significant event: The Green Party’s ascendancy in Illinois.

* Editorial: Another report for the heap?

* Brown: Stroger/Peraica: Race is over, but readers still debating racial issue

* Libel lawsuit of Kane paper goes to jury - State Supreme Court justice seeks damages… More here

can anyone under the age of 40 really be considered a “longtime” anything?

“…many people may have missed another politically significant event: The Green Party’s ascendancy in Illinois.”

I second that. People just don’t realize that the Green Party is now going to be able to do things like run candidates for Congress with only about 50 signatures in some cases. Thanks to the state-mandated primary, Greens are also going to be on the ballot much sooner and will garner more media attention. Historically, Greens have won about 25% of all the races in which they participate nationally; so even if the party were only to run 25 candidates for State Representative, that’s still at least 6 wins!

    Squideshi,

Options are good, but it is a stretch to proclaim the Greens “ascendant”. They hit a very unique statewide gubernatorial situation where “none of the above” was a desirable vote for many.

I will buy you the vegetarian dinner of your choice if the Greens win one state house seat in 2008.

    Squideshi,

After having read just about every post you’ve written regarding IRV (a good idea) and Rich Whitney (not my cup of tea), all I ask is, please, please have the Greens run someone against Dan Lipinski in IL CD3 for 2008. Thanks.

The jury gave Thomas $7 mil.

  7. - Democrat for Peraica - Tuesday, Nov 14, 06 @ 10:37 pm:

As a Democrast, I am very dissapointed in what the Cook County Democratic Party has become. I have sat by and watched two elections in a row stolen from the rightful winners: this spring it was Claypool, and it was Peraica this fall. I guess I should not be surprised, since they have been rigging elections in Cook County for forty plus years. Why should I or anyone else expect it to change now? As much contempt as I have for the Bush adminsistration, I think the Cook County Democratic machine is just as bad. I am ashamed of both.

  8. - Dale - Tuesday, Nov 14, 06 @ 10:42 pm:

    Dem,
Reverend Sampson did not help matters when he said that Claypool and Peraica were both losers. What a jerk. And Mayor Daley is the ultimate hypocrite for calling Claypool a sore loser. Hmmmmm… it wasn’t Claypool who ran against Jane Byrne in 1983 saying her defeat would be his victory, it was Richie Daley…. Talk about a sore loser!

  9. - NoMoreStroger - Tuesday, Nov 14, 06 @ 10:52 pm:

This election for Cook County Board President was not about race for me. I am a black man, and I am sick and tired of watching other black voters support politicians who do nothing for them. I voted for Peraica this time because the Strogers have NOT DONE ANYTHING for black people in Cook County, other than members of their political organization in the 8th ward. They did not support qualified black candidates like Obama, Roland Burris, or Jesse White when they ran for office, but instead endorsed their white opponents. The Strogers are BINOS (black in name only). As such, I voted agaisnt Todd because I knew nothing would get any better for me or my familt if he won. I may be proven wrong here, but I am not holding my breath.

  10. - Jim - Wednesday, Nov 15, 06 @ 12:05 am:

I was against Stroger because he is a puppet for the Daleys. Both Richard M. Daley and his brother John Daley are crooks who fleece the taxpayers out of millions of dollars per year. In fact, if Chicago does end up hosting the Olympics in 2016, it will be a shame because the people who need the proceeds from such an event will not get a dime. The money will go to Mayor Daley and his cronies. I hope the Olympic committee uses good sense and takes the Olympics elsewhere as a result.
