Morning shorts

Thursday, Jan 18, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Daily Herald: “An effort this week by Illinois Republican leaders to halt a conservative Lake County organization from using the party’s name might hinge on whether it’s a generic word or a trademark.”

* Tribune: “A condition of working for one of Illinois’ most politically powerful unions was giving the boss $100 a month, according to union members seeking to fire that boss by defeating him in an upcoming election.” [Oops. Wrong lawsuit.]

* Sun-Times:

A wide-ranging hospital fraud investigation in Nevada has Cook County Board President Todd Stroger reconsidering his plans to help balance the county’s budget on a private firm’s promise to bring up to $125 million a year to the county’s ailing health system. […]

Court documents show that among the companies being investigated is Crystal Communications, with links to Orlando Jones, the influential godson of former board President John Stroger. The company is in the same Loop office as Jones’ firm. Jones said he simply leases the company office space and is not involved in its operations.

* Orlando Jones gets around. Check this out.

    Rich: If you want a chuckle, read the end of the Trib coverage on the U of I on-line proposal. NB the web site names they purchased in conjunction with the decision. CYA.

    Those who are outraged by the National Wildlife Refuge budget shortfalls might want to take note that according to current estimates, the federal government will have spent close to &800 billion dollars on Iraq by the fall of 2008, perhaps more if we hand out yet more money to the Iraquis in the form of “job creation” and additional economic aid.

    Americans have been astonishingly accepting of the spending of billions of dollars (and over 3000 American lives) in a country that doesn’t even want us to be there. Meanwhile, 45 million lack health insurance nationwide, schools are crumbling, higher education is too expensive for many, and we can’t even afford to retain a few biologist.

    But those who don’t want all their tax dollars to go to Iraq might want to write our feckless Illinois senators Obama and Durbin and suggest they try to get a little bit of that money back
    for our wildlife.

    What is wrong with Illinois? On Fox news last night they were reporting how great all the states were doing fiscally. New York Mayor Bloomberg has over 2 billion in surplus. He is trying to figure out how to give money back to the taxpayers. This is really sickening to listen to. illinois has the worst schools and government services are cut to the bone. Still it looks like the state, county and city will never do anything but barely survive. What is our problem ?

    $40 to park a car for several hours to watch the Bears! Does that come with free beer, brats, and a heater? I’ll be lounging in the reserved skybox in my basement.

    Don’t expect politicans who are already addicted to corporate cash to kick the habit. The way to solve this problem is to elect someone who already refuses all such contributions and is free of such influences. Vote Green.
