Daley’s first TV ad of the season

Wednesday, Feb 7, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller

A pal o’ mine recorded Mayor Daley’s new TV ad and passed it along for your perusal. You can see it below (there is another ad in front of it, so don’t be confused).

First, though, the Sun-Times has a story about the spot today.

Mayor Daley is hitting the airwaves with a “modest buy” of television commercials that tout his 18-year record on education, crime-fighting, and downtown and neighborhood development — with no mention of City Hall corruption.
“I would call it a modest buy,” said the mayor’s longtime political consultant, David Axelrod. “It’s not a hugely heavy buy. It’s enough to get our message across. . . .

“One of our concerns, frankly, is that people know there is an election. It’s very low-key out there,” he said. […]

The 30-second commercial shows Daley driving in a car and in a classroom with kids. An announcer says Daley is “working for deeper reforms to give all our kids a chance” even though test scores are up and dropout rates are down.

It is nice. Easy to remember. It is good not to hear him try to speak. The ad makes the Mayor look like a silent presence in the city, like some kind of god. It is OK.

I must say it is 100 times better than the ad that Davlin has of himself dealing with the tornado’s.

As with the last race, he does not ask for our vote. Then as now, he is confident that voters are gushing over how nice downtown looks, rather than tallying the costs of his arrogance: corruption, budget waste, neighborhood blight (west of Kedzie, but never mind that, look at the Bean. Isn’t it shiny? You can see yourself in it).

Then as now, getting reelected without asking for a vote intentionally sends a message to city council, the business community, labor and anyone else who would challenge him on major or minor matters over his next term. It is far-sighted, smart strategy and, given the herd-like behavior of voters, not at all daring.

Unfortunately, I doubt he’ll lose this election. I’ll be voting for one of his opponents, but I doubt he’ll lose. I’m just hoping for some turnover in the aldermanic races.

I saw one Daley ad, dunno if its this one, but it made me chuckle. I would love to see the mayor lose, if only over the terrible state of affairs at the CTA.

This was a nice commercial. It made a very simple point. I just wonder what neighborhood this was filmed in.

The short clip of the auto ad at the end looked more interesting. Even the Total cereal ad was more interesting.

I found it odd that they showed him in a limo and then showed the limo driving through a modest neighborhood.

Rich, haven’t you ever been to Bridgeport? He used to live there, now I think he’s got a condo in south Loop. That “modest neighborhood” average home price is $338,245. I should be so modest.

I liked it. There was only one passing verbal reference to downtown and the rest of the ad was about neighborhood concerns.

The driving around in the limo is clearly a reference to his reputation for taking notes on what needs to be done as he travels around the city. It shows he doesn’t just sit behind his desk downtown. I agree with Rich on the fact that this visual image isn’t necessarily effective and I don’t know how the average voter will read it. I would have used more footage of him with people in the neighborhood rather than isolated in his limo.

He could be riding around the Bungalow Belt in a sumptuous coach-and-four with liveried footmen and the “visual” wouldn’t make any difference to the foregone conclusion of this election.

Look more carefully at the commercial. I believe RMD was riding in a standard issue black “towncar,” his usual conveyance, not a limo per se.

  12. - JakeCP - Wednesday, Feb 7, 07 @ 4:47 pm:

I think he’s airing a commercial because maybe one of his opponents is about to start airing commercials pretty soon.

    Not to pile on, but…

“The 30-second commercial shows Daley driving in a car…”

When’s the last time you think he actually drove himself to work? When’s the last time you think he got into a cold car in the morning?

Yes, I think they were going for the whole “he takes notes” meme. But if he can remember where that pothole was, why can’t he remember who hired Angelo Torres?

The limo? The eco-mayor in a limo?
