Question of the day

Monday, Mar 26, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller

I wondered why no comments were appearing this morning. Had I been abandoned by my readers? Was it something I said? Were you seeing someone else?

It turns out, I forgot to open comments after the weekend break. Oops. Sorry about that.

Anyway, here’s the question: What should be the “Official State Food of Illinois”?

Snark is encouraged, of course.

It would have to be Bull, because thats all they feed us!!

  6. - So-Called "Austin Mayor" - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 9:53 am:

Bacon, Sausage, Chops, Ribs — all forms of Pork.

But to prepare it properly — i.e., Illinois-style — you must do your best to have someone else pay for it. And failing that, convince voters that it will pay for itself sometime down the road.

I’m gonna have a brat for lunch — and I’ll pay for it by leasing my children’s future income.

  7. - GOP'er - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:05 am:

Lard sandwich with bacon and real mayo, smothered with chitterlings and sauerkraut, on garlic bread.

  8. - Levois - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:16 am:

Stuffed pizza and I suggest Edwardo’s.

  9. - Just Because - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:19 am:

Mushroom, just like the citizens of Illinois, keep in the dark and feed [Word deleted by Miller. Please don’t swear in comments, including the use of “*”]

Easy - Biscuits and Gravy: The paragon of culinary arts in this dish:

Slaters - a lunch wagon/night-owl stop near Washington & Station Streets in Kankakee,
Illinois -its coronary impact would give Joe Moore and other delicate toes the ‘vapors and the miseries!’

I’m getting all misty just thinking about it!

  11. - Wumpus - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:28 am:

    Beef, that’s what everyone has.

    Better yet, horse meat.

  12. - ArchPundit - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:34 am:

    The Horseshoe sandwich

    Everyone can look like Kjellander!

  13. - Logical - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:41 am:

Rocky Mountain Oysters (pig testicles for those of you up north). Most people think they taste great until told what they were eating. Much like the financial situation in IL.

  14. - VanillaMan - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:54 am:

Pork tenderloin sandwiches. Breaded, thin and crispy on a toasted bun with mayo, lettuce and pickle.

I rarely eat them, but they are oh-so-Illinois, in a good way.

I was going to say pizza, but pizza south of I-80 is absolutely horrific and you said Illinois.

  15. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:54 am:

Blagojevich Sandwich — Rich, white bread embracing thick slices of baloney. Served with a large glass of koolaid.

Or, the Education Funding Reform Special — A big, white, empty plate.

  16. - Harry Caray - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 10:57 am:

White Castle. It seems like a good idea at the time, but the next morning you, and everyone around you, regrets it.

  17. - Councilman Sinnock Online - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:02 am:

I agree w/ Vanilla - Pork Tendorlion Sandwich from Sprouts in Quincy. The Horeshoe is a close second.

I think it was J. Swift a modest english guy that said Eat the Irish…right..there’s the state food!

    The Twinkie.

  21. - Team Sleep - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:12 am:

It’s gotta be the horseshoe. Fatty, too much food, a lot of cheese, makes you lazy after you eat it…

A close second is the cozy dog. Just because it’s a damn hot dog on a stick - with batter around it. Yum.

  22. - anon - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:23 am:

My friend Iggy told me that the J. Swift comment would for sure flush Hickey…I wonder why?

  23. - anon - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:32 am:

Foie gras, horsemeat, cigerettes, trans fats, and everything else that has or will be banned in Illinois, but not pork.

  24. - Pat Hickey - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:33 am:

You and Iggy must work at Argonne; National Honors Society; PhiBetaKappans!

    1. Swift was Irish ( Anglo/Irish
    2. It is Lent

  25. - anon - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 11:40 am:

    1) Iggy was right-as usual 2)Anglo/Irish–is that what MacNamee described as a “hillbilly” in today’s Sun-TImes? 3) I don’t know what Swift your thinking–I was thinking the “Swift” from Armour-Swift Meat Packing in Iowa. 4) Never expect to much from Poli-Sci majors 5)Irish comment redacted–the state food should be the typical Irish Meal– Mac’n'Cheese, Canadian Bacon, Sheet Cake and a glass of kool-aid—just like they serve at the IDOP–JCC facility–real homy.

Good for the Illinois economy, environmentally correct and a boon for doctors and hospitals.

Deep fried carp or buffaloe fish sandwhich served on rye bread with a slice of white onion washed down with a Stag beer.

  30. - prairiestatedem - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 12:29 pm:

Toss up between good ole southern Illinois BBQ from 17th Street in Murphysboro or Pizza with a deeper dish than the blago defeicit…though i dont think thats possible. While we are on it Rich perhaps instead of crappy chain restaurants in the basement of the Thompson Center we could have a smattering of Illinois cusine…show those Chicagoans a little downstate culture

  31. - Keyser Soze - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 12:33 pm:

Set aside food. How about a new state flag (compare with Arizona’s cool flag) and a new state song (see Indiana, Kentucky, etc.)?

  32. - i d - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 12:35 pm:

Foie gras on a stick. Oh sorry, guess some cannot have that. So how about some big raspberries on a stick?

  33. - vole - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 12:52 pm:

Field Corn of course! We eat more forms of it than anyone can imagine. Read the book, Omnivore’s Dilemma, and you will discover that we are practically corn people. We subsidize it, we pile it on the ground, ADM says we can drive forever on it, and it virtually runs the politics in Springfield. What a deal! I think it might even be worthy of a moment of silent prayer to open each school day. Corn is god in IL.

  34. - Jechislo - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 1:05 pm:

Grilled Reinvented Tenderloin burger. (GRT burger for short). It’s free to consumers. Just walk into any food joint in Illinois and order a couple. The restaurant owners will pay for it for you. It will also be served for school lunches 4 days per week. It’s for the kids you know. Everyone benefits and it’s free!

  35. - vole - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 1:21 pm:

Jechislo, Don’t they produce that GRT burger down in Whereismineville? But, doesn’t it cause some gastrointestinal problems in all them fat cats who are presently shirking all their moral duties to mankind?

  36. - Reddbyrd - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 3:10 pm:

    Bud Light (buckets)
If you get to eyeball Capt.Fax’s ensemble today you could understand why the comments were not on early.
Clearly Capt. Fax was the victim of a vicious home invasion and robbery. All mirrors stolen!

  37. - Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 3:21 pm:

Reddbyrd is now a fashion critic. Will wonders never cease? lol

  38. - ThePiper - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 4:23 pm:

    Pork chop on a stick?

  39. - jaundiced eye - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 4:44 pm:

There is pizza south of I 80, it’s just thin crust. Try Cafe Milo or Timpone’s in CU. But really a transfat-laden “skillet” in any small town restaurant should be the state symbol — and it provides a handy cast-iron weapon when you’re through carbo loading.

  40. - Reddbyrd - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 5:28 pm:

Either fashion critic or demolition expert….anyone else set an eye ball on teh Capt. Fax this day? I mst be the lucky one

  41. - U of I Dem - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 7:43 pm:

I concur with Levois - Edwardo’s stuffed pizza!

  42. - Just a Citizen - Monday, Mar 26, 07 @ 7:51 pm:

    Fitzgerald’s Piece of Cake

  43. - diane - Tuesday, Mar 27, 07 @ 7:36 am:

No one loves the Italian beef sandwiches? No place does them better than northern Illinois.
