Question of the day

Wednesday, Jun 20, 2007 - Posted by Rich Miller

I think we did something like this last year, but I’ll ask it again because it’s summer.

Are you planning a vacation to any Illinois spots this year? Where and why?

Yes, the Alton - Grafton area is always nice. Beautiful scenic views of the rivers from the bluffs. Great accomadations, too.

  2. - Tea Leaves - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:09 am:

No, we only go somewhere (tropical) when the snows flying in Illinois.

  3. - VanillaMan - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:14 am:

    Yes!
We are taking our kids to a real farm and spending time in Carlinville. We will watch movies in an old theater and drive in, fish at Beaver Dam, buy fruits and vegetables at the orchards and farm stands, go to the Macoupin County fair and watch the kids show off their livestock, and watch corn grow.

Then we are off to Chicago to sit in traffic jams, eat great pizza, visit families and friends, SHOP, swim at the Dunes, and eat brats, Chicago dogs, and stay in a fancy Hilton.

Then back home to Springfield, where fun goes to die. (Maybe the Fair will be going on by then.)

  4. - Kosin - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:20 am:

I will make my ANNUAL pilgrimage to the greatest ballpark EVER, Wrigley Field, even though I am a LIFELONG Sox Fan at least since 1972!

  5. - Fan of the Game - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:22 am:

Going to Chicago to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. Plan on hitting Shedd, Field, Science and Industry, shops, Brookfield Zoo and seeing “Wicked.”

  6. - Fire Ron Guenther - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:26 am:

No. I am going to Wisconsin, the official state playground for Illinois residents.

  7. - Homer - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:34 am:

I plan on visting the Springfield power plant to check up on Montgomery Burns. Then I’ll head down to City Hall and say hi to Mayor Quimby…er..Davlin. Then I may head down to Moe’s (Two Brothers) for a Duff. Sounds like a vacation to me. Woo-hoo!

  8. - Boone Logan Square - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:37 am:

Hot Doug’s. See URL for the reasons to do so.

  9. - MB - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:41 am:

I just took a 3 day weekend at Starved Rock. Went hiking on beautiful trails, drank some mediocre wine at local wineries, and relaxed on a farm with a book and my beautiful wife. Nice easy get-away from Chicago.

  10. - Stuck in Springfield - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:42 am:

I’ll go anywhere in this state anyone wants me to as long as we get out of session!

  11. - grad student - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:43 am:

After this session I am getting as far away from Illinois as possible…I am thinking Russia.

  12. - zatoichi - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:49 am:

Beer tents at the state fair for live music. Taking a tour of disc golf courses around the state. High class, exclusive summer plans.

  13. - Little Egypt - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:49 am:

Anywhere in Southern Illinois, nevermind that I’ve been there lots of times before. Sometimes the best places are just in your own backyard, little drives here and there, and places with fancy names called “EATS”.

  14. - jwscott72 - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:58 am:

No. Well that’s not true. I might head to the unemployment office if there’s no budget. Oh wait, that wouldn’t be open either.

  15. - Commonsense in Illinois - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 11:00 am:

Me? I’m going to Springfield and visit our state capitol…wait a minute…I live here!

Here’s a pretty good rub…my wife left on vacation this morning!

  16. - Anonymous - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 11:06 am:

Nope - Minnesota for fishing, relatives and hopefully cooler weather. living in Chgo we have it all - so Minnesota is just a get away.

But what other people are doing sounds cool. Maybe I should get all the relatives to move to a lake in this state v- what you say - we don’t have 10,000 lakes in Minnesota - darn!

    Doug

Now, in 27 years, I ain’t never run into no Martian. Not at 2:30 in the morning, and certainly not at a fine scarfin’ establishment like “Eat.”

    Can anyone name the song?

  18. - Governor Blago - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 11:09 am:

From what I hear there is a nice mansion in Springfield I might check out this summer if I have the time.

  19. - Captain America - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 11:29 am:

Springfield for Governor’s Day at the State Fair. I always try to attend the County Chair Breakfast before the rally at the Fair. It will be interesting to see which leaders attend and those who don’t, a well as what they say, given the hostile relationships among the top three Dems. I come for the politics, not the fair.

  20. - Patriot - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 11:34 am:

Wisconsin Dells!!! Grandkids love the waterparks.

  21. - railsplitter_68 - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:05 pm:

Fan, It’s nice to see that someone else out there appreciates Brownsville Station.

  22. - Milorad - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:07 pm:

    Martian Boogie Fan

  23. - i d - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:10 pm:

I’m retired; every day is a vacation day in Illinois.

  24. - pickles!! - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:17 pm:

No, i refuse to vacation in Illinois. About 3 years ago, i went on a amping trip to Chain-O-Lakes State PArk, and were treated like prisoners. Rangers coming around every 10 minutes, telling us what we can’t do. Any state that deosn’t allow an adult to have a beer next to a campfire does not get my leisure money.

Wisconsin is so much better. beautiful lakes, clean nature sites, and the roads are so much better. Hell, i’d rather go to Indiana, where there is More than Corn, as they say, then Illinois.

  25. - Lt. Gov Quinn - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:53 pm:

Gov. Blago you need to be corrected, if you would like I can help you raise money for your legal defense fund. I need to measure the Gov’s Mansion for my wife’s drapes. After I finish my measurements then I would like to travel to Gays Illinois to see the two story outhouse.

Then maybe travel to Murphysboro to looks for the mudmonster.

  26. - Hey Vanilla Man - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 12:59 pm:

While in Carlinville you should stop by Ryan’s Pub….I hear they have the best chicken in Illinois

    ~Tomato!

  27. - ArchPundit - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 1:04 pm:

Chicago for Yearly Kos, the State Fair and several mini-trips to Greene County—The Handlin family home area.

  28. - Patriot - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 1:17 pm:

The best chicken in Illinois or anywhere is at “Rips” in Ladd.

  29. - Little Egypt - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 2:01 pm:

My vacation just might consist of:

Best chicken ‘n dumplins - Lola’s in West Frankfort

Best Pizza - Walt’s in Marion (prefer the double decker all meat). The nachos are pretty good too.

Best Italian - Benny’s in Marion

Best Bar-b-que - 17th Street in Murphysboro or the new one in Marion

Best hamburger - A makeover of the old Orville’s Drivein burgers can be found at the bowling alley in West Frankfort. Better than those White Castle sliders any day. Bring lots of Tums.

  30. - Old Shepherd - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 2:11 pm:

I’ll be going to several Southern Illinois Miners games at the new Rent One Ballpark in Marion.

  31. - Belle - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 2:13 pm:

No, no beach, no mountains, no way.

  32. - Big Al - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 3:21 pm:

To Chicago for the Al Capone tour.

  33. - Rosebud - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 3:25 pm:

Maybe, since it’s empty, they could rent out the Governor’s mansion for a hefty price! It would help defray the cost of all the airplane time the DOT racks up for our Governor.

  34. - Bill - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 3:27 pm:

    Little e,
You are going to get really fat!

  35. - Dave - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 4:40 pm:

Already been — We go to Giant City State Park every Memorial Day Weekend. Love it!

  36. - leo - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 4:43 pm:

Dem Day at the State Fair. Yearly Kos, etc.

  37. - Little Egypt - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 5:43 pm:

Bill, you could be right. But I guarantee, I’m going out of this world sliding into home plate shouting, Whoa, what a ride!!!!

  38. - Ron Burgundy - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 5:46 pm:

I’ll probably try and canoe down the Fox River for a couple days and camp one night. Did it a few years ago and it was a blast.
