Yes!
We are taking our kids to a real farm and spending time in Carlinville. We will watch movies in an old theater and drive in, fish at Beaver Dam, buy fruits and vegetables at the orchards and farm stands, go to the Macoupin County fair and watch the kids show off their livestock, and watch corn grow.
Then we are off to Chicago to sit in traffic jams, eat great pizza, visit families and friends, SHOP, swim at the Dunes, and eat brats, Chicago dogs, and stay in a fancy Hilton.
Then back home to Springfield, where fun goes to die. (Maybe the Fair will be going on by then.)
I plan on visting the Springfield power plant to check up on Montgomery Burns. Then I’ll head down to City Hall and say hi to Mayor Quimby…er..Davlin. Then I may head down to Moe’s (Two Brothers) for a Duff. Sounds like a vacation to me. Woo-hoo!
I just took a 3 day weekend at Starved Rock. Went hiking on beautiful trails, drank some mediocre wine at local wineries, and relaxed on a farm with a book and my beautiful wife. Nice easy get-away from Chicago.

I’ll go anywhere in this state anyone wants me to as long as we get out of session!
- grad student - Wednesday, Jun 20, 07 @ 10:43 am:
After this session I am getting as far away from Illinois as possible…I am thinking Russia.
Beer tents at the state fair for live music. Taking a tour of disc golf courses around the state. High class, exclusive summer plans.

Anywhere in Southern Illinois, nevermind that I’ve been there lots of times before. Sometimes the best places are just in your own backyard, little drives here and there, and places with fancy names called “EATS”.
Nope - Minnesota for fishing, relatives and hopefully cooler weather. living in Chgo we have it all - so Minnesota is just a get away.
But what other people are doing sounds cool. Maybe I should get all the relatives to move to a lake in this state v- what you say - we don’t have 10,000 lakes in Minnesota - darn!

Now, in 27 years, I ain’t never run into no Martian. Not at 2:30 in the morning, and certainly not at a fine scarfin’ establishment like “Eat.”
From what I hear there is a nice mansion in Springfield I might check out this summer if I have the time.

Springfield for Governor’s Day at the State Fair. I always try to attend the County Chair Breakfast before the rally at the Fair. It will be interesting to see which leaders attend and those who don’t, a well as what they say, given the hostile relationships among the top three Dems. I come for the politics, not the fair.
No, i refuse to vacation in Illinois. About 3 years ago, i went on a amping trip to Chain-O-Lakes State PArk, and were treated like prisoners. Rangers coming around every 10 minutes, telling us what we can’t do. Any state that deosn’t allow an adult to have a beer next to a campfire does not get my leisure money.
Wisconsin is so much better. beautiful lakes, clean nature sites, and the roads are so much better. Hell, i’d rather go to Indiana, where there is More than Corn, as they say, then Illinois.
Gov. Blago you need to be corrected, if you would like I can help you raise money for your legal defense fund. I need to measure the Gov’s Mansion for my wife’s drapes. After I finish my measurements then I would like to travel to Gays Illinois to see the two story outhouse.
Best chicken ‘n dumplins - Lola’s in West Frankfort
Best Pizza - Walt’s in Marion (prefer the double decker all meat). The nachos are pretty good too.
Best Italian - Benny’s in Marion
Best Bar-b-que - 17th Street in Murphysboro or the new one in Marion
Best hamburger - A makeover of the old Orville’s Drivein burgers can be found at the bowling alley in West Frankfort. Better than those White Castle sliders any day. Bring lots of Tums.
Maybe, since it’s empty, they could rent out the Governor’s mansion for a hefty price! It would help defray the cost of all the airplane time the DOT racks up for our Governor.
