Comcast service problem - Blogging will resume soon

Thursday, Apr 24, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller

* As of 8:52 am, Kevin and I are both having trouble accessing the Tribune, Sun-Times and Peoria Journal Star websites.

*** UPDATE *** A Comcast recording says there’s a service interruption in the Springfield area and they’re working on it.

*** UPDATE 2 *** Kevin got through to a Comcast service person who told him that it’s a statewide outage issue and there’s no timeline yet on when it will be fixed. techie

*** UPDATE 3 *** I’m able to access some sites, albeit with much patience, so I’ll post some stuff in a few minutes.

*** UPDATE 4 *** I’d make some smart Alec remark about how I’m so looking forward to competition in the cable industry, but some Springfieldians might disagree

AT&T has upset some Springfield residents with its plans to install nearly 100 utility boxes around the city, some of them in people’s yards.

The boxes are being installed so that AT&T can begin offering digital video service here. They also will help the telecommunications giant upgrade its Internet and telephone services.

Many of the boxes will be on city-owned right-of-ways between the sidewalk and the street. But others are to be placed in utility easements, which can be in residents’ yards.

*** UPDATE 5 *** It’s beyond weird that some sites are fully accessible to me right now, like the Post-Dispatch, while others are completely inaccessible, like the Tribune, and still others are slow but somewhat accessible, like the Sun-Times.

*** UPDATE 6 *** Man, this is worse than the old dial-up days.

*** UPDATE 7 *** As of 11:35 am, the problem appears to be dissipating.

I am moving to Springfield soon and will need to find a new internet provider… guess it won’t be Comcast.

  12. - WayDumberThanYouThink - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 9:13 am:

We are listening to WGN-Am right now via Comcast
We are punishing all of you naysayers who refuse to believe the SpinSisters….Believe now and we will restore your ISP…NOW!

  13. - Ghost - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 9:21 am:

WDTYT I though we had to appease Al Gore by driving Hybrids to get internet…..

  14. - Comcast - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 9:21 am:

    South of I-80:

If you’re truly south of I-80, shouldn’t it be, “where’s my mullet?”

    Six Degrees

Sorry, I forgot that my spell doesn’t catch those things!

  18. - Anonymous - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 9:58 am:

If there was a chance to get fiber to my house, AT&T could have a ‘footprint’ in my yard. I’d just plant some shrubs around it.

  19. - EJ - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 10:15 am:

If you’re a comcast “customer” (aka Slave), be sure to call them when the outage is done and get a refund for the downtime. The CR for the outage is CR122426917

  20. - shoo - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 10:20 am:

If you run into problems again and you’re on twitter, you can message http://twitter.com/comcastcares.

  21. - Springfieldian - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 10:45 am:

It’s nice to know Comcast immediately raised their rates as soon as they took over from Insight. They stated that it was to provide “continued excellence in service and performance”.

  22. - Ken in Aurora - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 10:58 am:

Springpatch is getting U-Verse already? We can’t even get DSL in my part of Aurora!

  23. - Say WHAT? - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 11:15 am:

I saw some of the at&t boxes being installed where I live today (not in Springfield). They are surprisingly large, take up a lot of yard and take away from the view. To top it off, its on the corner where I pull out onto the main street every morning and made it hard to see oncoming traffic. I think there will be problems here that bushes or shrubs can’t fix. Hope Comcast solves your problem soon.

  24. - Anonymous - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 11:37 am:

Anyone in Springpatch tried Xanadoo wireless internet yet? If so, how is it working?

  25. - Chanson - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 11:46 am:

I am so happy that we chose AT&T and we did so because telephone service rarely went out in last thiry years and cable cannot make it through severe weather. When we moved into our house the backyard easement was full of cable and phone equipment and figure it’s just goes with living in the modern era.

  26. - Ghost - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 11:59 am:

Looked at Xanadoo, but they want the same rate as Comcast PLUS paying them for their special modem for each device.

    go AT&T!!

  27. - Capitol View - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 12:08 pm:

we have Comcast and phones over computer, so when Comcast has a bad cable day, my staff and I waste the entire morning until they get their act together again.

No rate reductions, no apologies - just be happy that the expected service is up and runnign again. For the moment, anyway…

  28. - Mr. Wizard - Thursday, Apr 24, 08 @ 1:16 pm:

Looked into Xanadoo 2 days ago. I recommend waiting for 2 reasons:
    1- They have only a few installs in Spfld and experience is not known yet;
2- They are supposed to provide a new faster modem in the next couple months.

Btw, their current “special” offer gives you a full rebate on the $100 modem.
