Governor No-Show

Thursday, May 8, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Told ya

Gov. Rod Blagojevich was absent Wednesday for the 27th annual Days of Remembrance Holocaust Observance, which was held at the Old Capitol State Historic Site.

* Check out who they sent instead…

Louanner Peters, the deputy governor, gave a brief speech in Blagojevich’s place.

This is the same person who worked for former Congressman Gus Savage….

Deputy Gov. Louanner Peters was former Congressman Gus Savage’s chief of staff for 10 years. Savage was the guy who blamed his 1992 Democratic primary loss on the “white racist press and the racist, reactionary Jewish misleaders.”

Yeah, smart move.

* So, where was the governor during the Springfield event? Why, he was appearing on Chicago TV shows to promote his new anti-violence program that doesn’t yet exist, and getting hammered by the usually friendly morning anchors…

Governor Rod Blagojevich joined us on “Good Day Chicago” this morning and talked about a lot of things. No, he doesn’t think he’ll be indicted. Yes, he wants to lease the state lottery to raise money for state projects.

Discuss.

At least he didn’t send Rev. Farakan in his place!

When the goofy morning happy talk people zing you, it’s time to restock the bunker with canned goods, batteries and bottled water.

  3. - Wumpus - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 10:15 am:

He also could have had that goofy guy who was running for Ohio COngress or senate who took out ads on WLS.

There are some issues that you don’t skip out on Holocast and abused women are 2 of them. Smart move roddy

At least he didn’t send her to speak at tax forum!

He is busy saving childrens lives and womens breasts, what more do you people want?

  6. - Levois - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 10:28 am:

We’re talking about a man who had no qualms about appointing a member of the Nation of Islam to a state race-relations panel. Of course he would make such a smart decision by sending as a surrogate a woman who has worked with a man who’s made questionable statements during his brief public career.

Clearly, the Jewish vote is not on the guv’s radar screen. Either he figures that most of them will vote for him anyway or their demographic is too small or too politically scattered to mean anything to a pol.

This ia a man who governs by demographics. Remember, Blago owes his victories (we elected him twice!) to African Americans and to wealthy liberal whites who thought Democrat was equivalent to reform. Ha. They may be rich, but they ain’t that bright. Nevertheless, expect them to vote for him again in 2010.

    You Stay Classy Rod…

  9. - Garp - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 10:38 am:

    Casandra,
Many of the wealthy liberal whites I know are Jewish and are a substantial voting block, donate heavily and should not be taken lightly. By the way, Blogo has lost the liberal white vote, in my opinion, and they will never vote for him again.

  10. - He Makes Ryan Look Like a Saint - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 10:42 am:

He was the first Governor to miss the event, He is making a lot of “First” in his time in office. I am sure there will be a few more first in the next few years.

  11. - Anon - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 11:27 am:

Louanner was also his stand-in for his first Springfield prayer breakfast years ago.

  12. - Excessively rabid - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 2:47 pm:

The current local Pure News (a franchised, African-American oriented monthly) shows Blago on the front page under the headline “Governor Goes to Church” with Bishop Arthur Brazier of the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago. The item is between Barbara Boxer investigating “Sewage Used in Study on Kids” and “Alicia Keys in Africa.” The main headline story is “NAACP Outraged Over Killings,” re: the Sean Bell case. The point being 1. that some corners of the media world continue to treat him kindly to say the least, and b. that he seems more attuned to showing up for events important to certain constituencies.

  13. - this is stupid - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 4:23 pm:

    Rich,
Once again you have tried to pull some media mess what does the comments of one person (congressmen Savage) 16 years ago have to do with the deputy governor going to honor the holocast.

You cheapen this sacred event by trying to pull a jeremiah wright on the Deputy governor, If you want to criticize the Governor fine but cut out this unwarranted attack on the Deputy Governor!

A month ago you wrote a story in the chicago sun-times with a picture of a dead legislator and identified it as the deputy governor! I thought you were a professional journalist, maybe not!

  14. - Loop Lady - Thursday, May 8, 08 @ 4:25 pm:

At what point does he give up ducking from public events and the silent treatment? Sheesh…talk about testicular virility…

If you had been paying attention, you’d know that the Sun-Times was responsible for that photo error, not me.

    To This is Stupid:

There is no such thing as an unwarranted attack on Louanner Peters as she is a top person in the Governor’s office. It is a low blow, however, to continue to send surrogates to events for you so you don’t get asked about the numerous investigations of your administration. It also doesn’t help that you hire the likes of Louanner Peters to be in your administration . . .
