I read with some interest the blurb about Daley, and adding cameras to street sweepers to ticket parking violaters.
Now if he can only pass a resolution adding cameras, and microphones to city offices. Then they can catch “patronage hiring” in action.

Yeah, call the cop on the carpet for what low life gangbangers did. That’ll solve the problem. Not!
- The Doc - Thursday, Jul 10, 08 @ 9:14 am:
Daley’s got to be fuming mad right now - his hand-picked, $300k per year police superintendent is getting lambasted by the mayoral lapdogs in the city council. Irony is fun.
- Ghost - Thursday, Jul 10, 08 @ 9:30 am:
so it only now just occured to the CTA that signs with information would be useful, and that the superviors should be in the field addressing problmes with the buses being bunched up.
I think we need to send more money to this finely tuned operation.

Those traffic light cameras were paid for by Homeland Security anti-terrorist money. Wonder where the street sweeper camera money came from.
The one question regarding enforcement is whether there is a list of fsvored cars which automatically get tickets quashed. But that couldn’t happen in Chicago. Naaahh.

My earlier comment about Carothers seems to have disappeared. Not sure why. That being said –
Carothers has a history of doing exactly what Daley wants. If Daley was to decide that we need more sworn officers on the streets, it is pretty clear that Carothers would vote just as he was instructed.
However, Daley has not provided Chicago with enough sworn officers (and for the most part, the “traffic control aides” provided as a cheap alternative are useless).
Rather than having the courage to go after Daley for not putting enough sworn officers on the job, Carothers went after the Weis. Weis is doing the best he can, with limited numbers. He only has so many people that he can deploy.
Which is the shame about Carothers. His ward needs somebody who can stand up and demand more for the Mayor, but instead they have Carothers who simply votes as he is told.

How can Weis be made responsible for the uptick in violence in Chicago? Could it be that desperate
people are becoming more desperate in the days of rising food and gas prices?…Carothers is mugging for the cameras and deflecting blame from Da Mare…

How can Weis be held responsible for the uptick in violence in the City? Could it be that deserate people are becoming more desperate in this economy?

Anonymous45, I think you’re implying that poverty causes crime, but that’s incorrect. During the Depression, the U.S. had a higher poverty rate (percentage of people in poverty) than it does now, but the crime rate (number of crimes per 100,000 people) is higher now, for almost every type of crime. Crime is caused by lower morals and disrespect for the victims. During the Depression, almost all Americans had higher morals.

Council panel to grill Weis
pure bluster
the “grilling” will be a lite saute at worse
Carothers’ committee hearing is about as likely to elicit illuminating testimony or concrete legislative proposals as my butt

Your butt should run for alderman. Or for County Board member.

PC: desperate times can make desperate people more so…I cannot even begin to compare the overall moral fiber of society today to those in the pre-entitlement program era…food and gas are ever more expensive…the socio-economic forces are further dragging the have nots into a poorer standard of living…gang bangers rule inner-city neighborhoods with better weapons than the CPD…Mr. Weis cannot be acountable for this…Mayor Daley has the final responsibility as do the parents of these ne’er do wells and street thugs…
