Not so deep thoughts
Wednesday, Oct 22, 2008 - Posted by Rich Miller * I can clearly remember a time when nobody ever asked me if I thought the governor was insane. * If someone gave me a $150,000 clothing and accessories allowance, I’d buy Krugerrands and claim they were the latest cufflink fashion. * Thank goodness there’s no refund law in Illinois. * Planning a Christmas vacation around the US Attorney’s work schedule has turned out to be a daunting task. * Is Michael just gonna run through every name in the world as possible appointees to Obama’s seat so she can say she had the scoop? * Anybody wanna buy a newspaper chain? Cheap? Your turn.

In high school I was erroneously informed that Illinois was a representative republic where we elected people who would make informed decisions about our lives. How can members of the GA claim they are informed when they are blackmailed into voting for a multi thousand page budget that they were only given the night before they are required to vote on it? They are informed that if they don’t support it, they get no pork. Bad system!

Blago certainly hasn’t let offending Barack get in the way of making dumb decisions. From threatening to call special sessions during election crunch time to saying Palin is qualified because she is a Governor to bringing up Obama every time someone mentions Rezco, our Governor doesn’t seem to care about offending the future Prez, so my deep thought is this.
Would our current Governor try to use the Senate selection as a bargaining chip to ease legal troubles?

Doc, I think you missed my point. Jesse Jr. has whacked his father for goofy comments involving Barack. He’s earning points with Obama.
I think Junior’s got his eye on the Senate, not mayor.

Royko would have been for Obama. He would have had a riot with Palin and those would have been special columns. He would have praised McCain but would have said something like he would never elect someone as old as himself (they would be about the same age had he lived)to take on the toughest job in the world. What would he have said about our Gov…whew?

I remember when being a legislator, senator or president meant something other than a way to become a millionaine.
I remember when someone who owned a business that handled taxpayers money was scrupulously honest.
I remember when politicians didn’t wear Savile Row suits and Ferragamo shoes.
I remember when politicians at all levels showed up at the office for the majority of each year.
I remember when you could take a man’s word to the bank.
I remember when people lived within their means, paid their taxes, paid their own mortgages and didn’t try to be what they were not.
I remember when people used to be satisfied if they could pay their bills, have a home, friends and good kids.
I remember when the story of Diogenes taking his lamp in search of an honest man was less frequently quoted.

Good, then you probably also remember when people’s means went a lot farther than they do today.
I remember when Lura Ryan opened the Governor’s mansion every Halloween for kids to come and get free candy.
I remember when some of us thought having both the legislative and and executive branch would be a good thing. (Were we ever naive!)
I remember calling the toll free number (actually, it might have been a Springfield number) every day after school to find out what things went on at the 1970 Con-Con that day.

I remember when…
…I never had to wonder about what a sign in a foreign language at a Used Car Dealer’s on Route 12–saying “No License, No Problem!”–meant to the rest of us.
…I could look forward to someday getting some major dental work done with the extra $$ I’d have when I stopped paying for my kids’ health insurance (because they were now funding their own) v. worrying about being forced to pay the same $$ (maybe more) for someone else’s kids’ insurance–and wondering about exactly how many kids there were and whether they’d EVER grow up.
…”Diversity in the Workplace” meant being able to actually collaborate with brilliant minds from all over the world v. compensating for those with a “different” work ethic or “learning to tolerate” those with whom the majority in the office couldn’t communicate no matter how hard we tried.
…coming to the US meant you accepted the risk that your kids and grandkids might eventually lose the ability to speak your native language v. acquiring the “right” to DEMAND that the rest of the Country learn it so that you’d never have to speak English in the US during your lifetime.
I even remember when most people in this Country seemed to believe that we were Americans first and “Global Citizens” living in a “Global Village” second–and that we actually realized what would happen if the order changed.
