Rep. Lang releases hold on capital bill

Monday, Jun 29, 2009 - Posted by Mike Murray

* 6:08 pm - Rep. Lang removed the parliamentary hold he placed on the capital bills. The bills will now go to the Governor’s desk to await further action. Here is video of Rep. Lang’s floor speech…

…Adding… From Rich: This was shot on my new iPhone 3Gs. I didn’t realize that it didn’t work in “landscape” mode. Oops.

Also, listen very closely at the 4:07 mark. You’ll hear Speaker Madigan ask a question twice in the background, and then you’ll hear my answer.

Looks like this was done with the Super Duper, Double Secret, Knee Mounted Spy Cam. How did they get it by Mapes? Good thing the operator didn’t have any popcorn in a bag or this would have never made to the Blog.

I don’t know about the rest of you but that announcement sure turned me on my ear. However, now the guv has something to do instead of breaking in a new pair of flip-flops at the gay pride parade. Sign it “Bozo” and let’s move on!

  4. - Technically Speaking... - Monday, Jun 29, 09 @ 8:14 pm:

I think he has to sign it “Pat Quinn,” not “Bozo”, or it doesn’t count.

    What a tongue-lashing by Lang.

Speaking of flip-flops, I think members on both sides of the aisle are getting frustrated by the “lack of clarity” from the Governor.

Whatever Quinn does with the budget, he needs to be clear and decisive.

Dumb move by Lang et al in the first place. They gave Quinn an out, and made the legislature look like silly game players. Now, Governor Quinn, sign the bill. Do it before the 4th of July Parades where plenty of labor folks will be able to cheer you, instead of jeer you.

  6. - Six Degrees of Separation - Monday, Jun 29, 09 @ 9:24 pm:

A good source told me late last week that Capital would be done this week. I’ll believe it when the ink is dry, but this move leads credence to the tip.

Sony Vegas would have allowed you to turn that video 90 degrees proper! ;)

Am I reading wrong, or did Cullerton also release the hold on the 50% budget bills today?

My first video using the 3gs iPhone. Didn’t realize that it didn’t work in landscape mode. Oops.

  10. - Bradinage - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 8:28 am:

Lang is always fun to listen to, primarily because he understands what he’s talking about and he’s not shy about sharing that knowledge.

    Brilliant move.

Quinn’s at McCormick Place this morning talking to Rainbow/PUSH.

    ?

There’s some business down south, isn’t there?

  12. - Lakefront Liberal - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 9:18 am:

I saw Quinn at a fundraiser last night and asked him if he would support the Meeks budget that has already passed in the Senate. He said that he already did support it and that when it was passed he testified for two hours in support of this budget. But he said that there was a House Dems caucus vote on it only got 30-something votes and so it was a no-go.

First of all I would love to see a roll call of that vote. Secondly, this WHOLE MESS would be over if they had just approved it right then and there! Cripes. And it would have passed if MJM was actualy a DEMOCRAT. This was the budget that had in it so much that progressive Dems have wanted for years. It was ready to go an MJM stood in the way and now here we are. That man needs to lead, follow or GET OUT OF THE WAY.

We might look at something H.L. Mencken observed:

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

Seems there are about 177+1 of those hobgoblins loose around Springfield, but I am not sure they are imaginary.

Another game of gottcha politics, yeah what a show. I guess it is to much to ask to really solve problems, just find politically convienent excuses to perpetuate the problem and at all costs maintain power.

  15. - Leatherneck - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 10:16 am:

On the GA website, I did notice that budget-related HB’s 312, 2129, 2132, 2145, 2194, and 2206 were sent to the Governor yesterday.

  17. - Say WHAT? - Tuesday, Jun 30, 09 @ 12:07 pm:

I haven’t felt this way since I was 15, when somebody served me two huge screwdrivers. I thought it was fancy orange juice. I was thirsty, so I drank up. Now, I won’t drink at all. I like to remain in upright position, and its good to be the only one at a party with a memory of the events. lol
