Morning Shorts: FYI for blog readers

Thursday, Aug 6, 2009 - Posted by Mike Murray

I will not be able to guest blog today or tomorrow. Sorry, but I don’t have the time.

Instead, I am doing a very large -and in my opinion very thorough- Morning Shorts.

I have separated MS into different posts by sections to allow for easier commenting and discussion of issues.

PLEASE make sure that you watch your comments extra closely today, because I will not be able to monitor them. If you can not, comments will be closed tomorrow.

Enjoy.

P.S. -check out Carol Marin’s story on the NRA’s impact on the CDC. Its in the ‘Other Interesting Stories and Op-Ed’ Section at the bottom. Also, check out the story on Tamns prison in the ‘Crime and Punishment’ section. I would do a post on both, but alas, I have to be at work at 10:30.

You’ve done a great job this week. Yay, Mike.

  2. - Amy - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 10:54 am:

thanks mike! and thanks to point us to the crime stories. there are great details in those, nice catch.

  3. - Ghost - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 11:49 am:

Nice Job! I like the format.

  5. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 1:41 pm:

Nice job, Mike! Thanks for keeping things going while Rich is away.

  6. - CircularFiringSquad - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 1:59 pm:

The following was posted under the MS Governance….take the hint…I CaptFaxBlog readers should take up a cash collection for BigMurr to make up for the lack of moolah from Rich and the yeoman effort. I’ll drop a $20 in the mail today.

BTW a lot handwringing went on about lack of details on IL fed stimulus spending….might not be that bad
“But just because a state’s own Web site is lacking doesn’t mean taxpayers are in the dark. The White House’s recovery Web site offers state-by-state information, including for Illinois. And Illinois is also one of 16 states that the U.S. General Accountability Office is closely following on its recovery Web site and in its bimonthly reviews of stimulus spending.”
BTW….a group called Good Jobs First issued the report that got the media. They are group that rakes in about $1.1 million a year from unknow sources according to their tax returns. Hmmmm

    ===CircularFiringSquad===

You are a gentlemen and a scholar good sir. Unexpected, but much appreciated.

I will certainly put it to good use, $20 buys a lot of beer in a college bar. LOL

I don’t expect any money from blog readers and I certainly am not asking for anything. (I think Rich would say that is a big no-no)

At the moment, however, I have not been told that I can’t accept unsolicited donations.

    Thus…

    My address:

BTW, nice call on BigMurr. That was actually my nickname all through high school, for obvious reasons. LOL

Hopefully ill be called medium murr in the future…I’ve lost 75 lbs since January.

BigMurr is currently a very accurate description though, as MediumMurr is still very much a work in progress. :)

  9. - Mike Murray - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 4:15 pm:

Also, thanks to all for the compliments on my running of the blog. I know it was not the usual high caliber of work, but I do what I can.

    It was my pleasure. ;)

  10. - 47th Ward - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 4:47 pm:

    ===I’ve lost 75 lbs since January===

I think Rich might know where it is…lol.

And I certainly hope you’re getting a ticket to the Sox game next week. You’ve more than earned it. Thanks for the great job this week.

  11. - Anonymous - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 5:24 pm:

Word, Ward! lol I’ll confess that I might know where a few of those pounds are, too.

    Thanks again, Mike!

  12. - CircularFiringSquad - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 5:38 pm:

BigMurr refered to your blog/journalistic potency not your girth which I too have observed to be evaporating before my eyes…could have said MidgetMurr :)
    or MirageMurr
Must stop now to observe the end of BrickheadJoe’s latest campaign.
First Houli, then Brickhead who could be next?
    Perhaps to QOTD for Friday.
    Keep those bucks rolling in

  13. - CircularFiringSquad - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 5:42 pm:

Sorry. I lied…just had to toss in some more Brickhead…I love his explanation…..too bad he can admit that he quits because he is less than a stellar candidate….from his publicists at the Daily Herald….”As you know, contrary to everyone’s expectations … Lisa Madigan announced that she would seek re-election,” Birkett wrote on the Web site. “Since that time, I have talked to my family, friends and supporters. I have assessed the political environment, the anticipated costs, and the commitment of time, among other factors. It has become clear to my advisers and me that it will be virtually impossible to compete financially with Lisa Madigan. She has the power of incumbency and her father continues to control the flow of campaign contributions.”

  14. - Obamarama - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 6:40 pm:

===First Houli, then Brickhead who could be next?===

It will be BrickheadJoe again, once he announces for Governor and inevitably drops out of that race too.

  15. - Craig Knapp - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 9:28 pm:

ChicagoGOP.com is the only site with blog posts today. What’s up with that?

  16. - Lynn S - Thursday, Aug 6, 09 @ 11:46 pm:

It’s migration season, Mike. How much longer are you going to be at that address? ;-)

And is the beer money being spent at Joe’s or one of the other local establishments? ;-) ;-)

  17. - Arthur Andersen - Friday, Aug 7, 09 @ 1:40 am:

Mike, once again job well done.

AA’s head starts to throb at just the thought of $20 in beer consumption on campus in one night. Of course, back when I was doing that, beer was $2 a pitcher or buck a bottle…

Mike, here’s a thought for a UI Cloutgate QOTD if you don’t have one for tomorrow-

“Which Cloutgate Figure would you pick as guest blogger for a day here at the fax blog?”

Think about it-those folks have shown a great range of oral and written communication skills over the past two months; the poor taxpayers deserve to hear more.

  18. - Mike Murray - Friday, Aug 7, 09 @ 4:36 am:

I just moved into that address on Monday.

And, though I do enjoy Joe’s, I am a regular patron of Murphy’s.

  19. - Lynn S - Friday, Aug 7, 09 @ 7:22 pm:

Went to Joe’s twice–witnessed a fight each time, so I’ve never gone back. When I drink I want to be around happy people, not looking around worrying if someone is going to land a punch on me for something I didn’t do or say…

And if you’re in Murphy’s you should be eating cheeseburgers. Grease helps coat the stomach and in theory should reduce the hangover!
