Council warrior kicks in big bucks to Quinn

Friday, Jan 22, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Thanks to a commenter, I checked the latest campaign finance report from Gov. Quinn and saw this…

At exactly the same time that the governor is trying to restart “Council Wars” with his counter-attacks on Tom and Dan Hynes and worshipful words about Harold Washington, Quinn’s taking $100,000 from one of the war’s chief architects, Ald. Ed Burke.

I love political irony, and this one is rich on all sides.

* From a press release…

WHO: U.S. Rep. Danny Davis
U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky
U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez
Jacky Grimshaw, former top aide to Mayor Harold Washington

WHAT: NEWS CONFERENCE TO DENOUNCE CYNICAL HYNES AD

WHEN: 11:45 a.m. Friday, Jan. 22 — TODAY

Here it comes.

* Hynes has a new endorsement ad. Rate it

* More trouble for Gov. Quinn

A botched early prison-release plan continues to haunt Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

Quinn’s Corrections Department acknowledges it underreported the number of inmates released early in a plan known as “MGT Push.”

Corrections updated its list — with 27 new names — Thursday night after inquiries from The Associated Press about some offenders.

Corrections now says 1,745 inmates were released early.

    Good ad. Period.

  2. - HUH - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 11:43 am:

Good ad! Quinn is really fumbling the ball on this race.

  3. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 11:51 am:

The first tell about whether Quinn would be a reform governor or whether all of that reform stuff he spouted was for show was when he had Ed Burke’s wife swear him in. The picture of Justice Burke swearing in Gov. Quinn was worth a thousand words.

  4. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 11:52 am:

    excellent A+

  5. - train111 - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 11:57 am:

Former Senate President Emil Jones kicked in $100,000 from his bankroll to Quinn as well.
Quinn’s really ramped up the borrowing to keep pace with Hynes.

    train111

  6. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:02 pm:

And the trying to keep pace with hynes just further underscores that quinn’s only concern is his political campaign, not the state of illinois, which is in serious trouble if he cared to notice.

but whatever. he’s only been running for governor since last spring–almost a year ago.

  7. - wordslinger - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:02 pm:

A reliving of Council Wars will be very confusing to a lot of voters.

  8. - One of Three Puppets - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:04 pm:

I am glad to see Quinn keep consistency!!! He borrows for operations on the state side so it just comes naturally to do it on the campaign side!

  9. - DOC - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:05 pm:

Word is that today is Tony Smalls last day with IDOC
Taking the fall for the early release.

  10. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:08 pm:

what was smalls’ position at idoc?

  11. - The Doc - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:10 pm:

Really tough to claim the reformer mantle when accepting those kinds of bucks from Ed Burke.

This ensures a nice, soft landing for lil’ brother Dan in the event he gets pink-slipped.

  12. - DOC - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:12 pm:

    D.D. Of Finance. CFO

  13. - nick - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:17 pm:

yea, and the DD of Finance has absolutely nothing to do with the classification of inmates. he may have come up with the idea as a cost saving measure but tony didnt pick the inmates to be released. its his job to present ideas to keep the department within its budget not classify inmates for early release.

  14. - Kyle Boller's Clipboard - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:17 pm:

For better or worse, in 2006 the Democrats were able to hold their noses and avoid a circular firing squad. But this year seems to be more than making up for that. With the battle lines and alliances a bizarre mishmash to begin with, the last-minute ratcheting up of rhetoric will make for some outstanding political theater. It’ll be interesting to see whether everybody really does get back under the tent for the primary winner in time for November.

  15. - DOC - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:21 pm:

All true Nick. Like I said. He took the fall.
    Not that he should have.

  16. - Anon - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:22 pm:

yeah, but it sounds good to pin it on the money guy of the organization. Those #%@#^&# bankers are responsible!

  17. - Student - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:23 pm:

Very good ad. Despite national criticisms of biased reporting etc., I think the average citizen does trust what their hometown or regional papers suggest.

  18. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:24 pm:

    Great closing arguement.

  19. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:43 pm:

just curious… does anyone know if Quinn is backing Burke or Lozano? HW would’ve backed lozano no question, but seeing as to how dan burke’s brother just gave Quinn $100K i’m guessing quinn better not be backing lozano.

  20. - Adolf Berle - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 12:44 pm:

Dumping the early release blame on the finance guy is classic shooting the messenger. Then Quinn sends another half dozen pilgrims into Corrections and throws more chaos into an already difficult mess. Fire the Director and be down with it!!!

  21. - OneMan - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:01 pm:

I think the fact it bashes Quinn instead of just pointing out the Hynes endorsements is interesting.

Full metal ugly now in this race.

  22. - Phineas J. Whoopee - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:01 pm:

I don’t know how Harold Washington can handle keps up with his schedule of late-all these endorsements and campaign commercials. Now he is backing Lozano? He truly is a marvel-at his age and being dead and all.

  23. - Phineas J. Whoopee - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:03 pm:

I don’t know how Harold Washington can keep up with his schedule of late-all these endorsements and campaign commercials. Now he is backing Lozano? He truly is a marvel-at his age and being dead and all.

    Sorry for the initial jibberish.

  24. - Amalia - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:10 pm:

anyone cover the press conference of Jacky and the MCs? it will
be nice to hear from others who were around in the ’80s and who see the Hynes use of Harold as mighty odd considering
    what happened politically.

  25. - Seneca - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:14 pm:

“Jacky Grimshaw, former top aide to Mayor Harold Washington” - aka Jacky Grimshaw, recent Quinn appointee to the CTA Board.

  26. - Moderate REpub - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:17 pm:

Good ‘endorsement’ ad. A+ is a little high, its good but nothing special. I wonder if we will see a personal plea from Hynes or if this is his close?

  27. - Seneca - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:18 pm:

    Part 2 - with a salary of $25,000.

  28. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:23 pm:

Amalia, it was even nicer to hear from Alton Miller, press secretary to HW at the time in question, who taled to the Sun-Times yesterday about this matter. :)

and, it is worth noting that Quinn’s version of why he left the Washington administration is at odds with not only Mayor Washington, but Alton Miller’s recollection, the mayor’s press secretary back in 1987.

Given quinn’s recent significant credibility problems, I am inclined to be skeptical of his version. Can anyone with impeccable credibility corroborate his version? If so, I’m more than happy to listen and possibly be swayed.
Jacky Grimshaw prefaced her statement yesterday statement with the following: “as far as I know…”

so, she is not very helpful because she can only offer her opinion. She can neither confirm nor deny anything really.

Grimshaw oversaw intergovernmental affairs back in ‘87, and was close to Mayor Washington personally and profressionally, but so was Miller. given his position as press secretary,it could be argued that miller was in fact closer. He would’ve had closer and more intimate knowledege of the day-to-day goings on at the mayor’s office, especially where staffing issues were concerned, a press secretary functions similiarly to a chief of staff in terms of closeness to the mayor and in some cases seemingly supercedes the chief of staff. Recall how close avis lavelle was to richard m. daley when he became mayor. Consider how close jacquelyn heard is to him now; she’s his right-hand, as was lavelle.

at the chicago mayoral level, the press secretary appears to be very much a person who functions as a confidant.

  29. - Boone Logan Square - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:24 pm:

For a couple of months, Hynes had a media campaign that seemed to spend a lot of money with no real focus.

No more. The 1-2 punch of the Washington ad and the endorsement ad tell a clear story of why voters should not choose Quinn and (in the second ad) why they should choose Hynes.

The second half of the ad is key. The quotes make Hynes seem like a competent fiscal steward at a time when people are worried about their jobs. (The Giannoulias ads also use that theme effectively.)

How much money does Hynes had left on hand? Do we know what kind of buys he is making for these two ads?

  30. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:43 pm:

    “You’re killing me, Smalls.”

  31. - Bill - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:44 pm:

Quinn is reeling as the truth comes out about his lack of ability to lead and solve problems in government going back to the Washington era. Now he is showing that he doesn’t know how to run a campaign either as he blows a 25 point lead in the polls in a month.
If Harold could be asked about Quinn’s accepting giant contributions from his arch nemesis Burke he would probably just respond, “typical”.
Quinn is almost done. 12 more days!

  32. - Carl Nyberg - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:50 pm:

If you like Pat Quinn, the best way to get the good version of Quinn may be to elect Hynes in the Dem primary.

That will give Quinn almost a year of being governor where he can focus on governing, not campaigning, and use the position to advance some progressive causes.

If Quinn wins the primary, we’re gonna get ten more months of Quinn the constant campaigner who is worried about doing something that will jeopardize his re-election.

  33. - Carl Nyberg - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 1:51 pm:

Danny Davis endorsing Quinn? Is that the same Danny Davis endorsing Dorothy Brown?

Or is it the Danny Davis who lied about running for President of the Cook County Board?

  34. - TitforTat - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:00 pm:

Nobody belived it and some even called for Hynes to drop out of the race for governor, but now a short time from election day Quinn looks to be in serious political trouble! The Question becomes - HOW FAR WILL QUINN FALL?

  35. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:02 pm:

I can’t find coverage of the press conference anywhere…Friday afternoon response may not be such a good idea.

  36. - dupage dan - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:17 pm:

  37. - showmethemoney - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:18 pm:

my sources within IDOC say the total MGT Push is closer to 2,000. Somewhere somebody

  38. - PADRAIG - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:28 pm:

What an I missing? What are Hynes qualifications?
These are just the usual 19th. Ward angry ads before they go down.

  39. - Cindy Lou - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:36 pm:

–”I can’t find coverage of the press conference anywhere…Friday afternoon response may not be such a good idea”–

The only thing I’ve seen so far is a cross between one for Quinn and one for Hynes over on NBC Chicago. Either rolling from his grave or cackling from it, take your pick.

  40. - Lee - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:36 pm:

More folks to vote for Quinn.

  41. - L.S. - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:42 pm:

Well played hit all around by Hynes camp. Credible critic, calls out Quinn’s biggest weaknesses. Attacks his black support in an election that will see relativly high involvement from the black communiity in Cook. Washington can’t respond, Quinn has to respond on a Friday afternoon. All around quality play. Now the only question is if Quinn can stop the bleeding before its too late.

  42. - Obamas' Puppy - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:43 pm:

If you don’t know how MANY are released you don’t WHO is released

  43. - anon - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:52 pm:

Got a chuckle out of this AP headline in the context of Poshard, Hoffman and most of the southerns jumping on with Quinn thinking he’s a shoe-in:

“SIU Med School Receives Grant to Study Digestion”

Gotta be lots of stomachs churning down south with all these recent developments.

    Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  44. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:55 pm:

LOL. The Quinn Administration got the MGT Push numbers wrong??????

The numbers are wrong due to an “old computer system?”

Um. Sure. Okay. If that’s how you want or need to spin it.

  45. - OneMan - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:56 pm:

Because old computers can’t do addition right, ask any software or computer guy they will tell you that computers couldn’t add right until the late 80’s

  46. - Another Anon - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 2:59 pm:

The way the papers are playing today’s AP break:

=State not sure which inmates got out early
=Even more prisoners than thought let go under early release program
=Corrections: Wrong early release prisoners listed

    OOF

  47. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 3:02 pm:

Sure one man. whatever. it’s not like there weren’t other, perhaps more primitive, means by which to get an accurate count.

this is an administration that likes to shift blame and come up with (convenient) excuses. whatever.

  48. - adolfo - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 3:15 pm:

Don’t overlook Quinn’s $100,000 loan from Emil Jones Jr. either.

  49. - Anonymous - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 3:22 pm:

Point goes to OneMan. First time WCW responded with two “whatevers” in a brief response. lol

  50. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 3:32 pm:

Just to focus on an aspect of the emil jones jr. matter…

it is my understanding that they (quinn & jones) were not friends last year this time or in all of the years prior. it’s kinda funny how dem pols in particular turn into “buddies” seemingly on the drop of dime.

that’s why the whole dan hynes ergo propoer hoc tom Hynes was so silly on the Quinn camp’s part. (hopefully I got that right)

it’s really sad that at lastnight’s SIU debates one of moderators fell for the absurdity of it all in a question that he posed to Hynes about the Washington ad. I guess that man who asked the question is some sort of college professor.

In illinois politics on the dem side especially you can bitter enemies on Monday, but when mutual interests happily conicide, the best of friends by Tuesday.

It’s funny because from what I understand and have heard after Harold Washington died Luis Gutierrez fell right in with Burke and Vrdolyak, despite the fact that he was brought in by Harold Washington.

  51. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 3:37 pm:

er, make that post ergo propter hoc

oh well you guys knew what I meant
    *blushing*

  52. - siriusly - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 4:16 pm:

Will County Woman - Your question assumes that Quinn has some sort of organization, he doesn’t. It also assumes that anyone wants Quinn’s backing?

From what I’ve seen, most democrats are trying not to talk about the race for governor - there is no passion among the electorate for either candidate.

I agree that Quinn’s rebuttal to the HW ad won’t be effective. If you have to explain your attack to the voters, it’s not a good one. However, Hynes ad has video of HW calling Quinn incompetent. It’s a pretty clear message.

PADRAIG - I’m not a Hynes defender, but your post was pure baloney. Even if you don’t like the guy, you surely must know that Dan Hynes has been the Illinois State Comptroller since 1998. That qualifies him - far more than some of the GOP candidates IMHO.

Hope for Quinn’s sake he has something better coming than that worthless rebuttal, or he might be in trouble.

  53. - Will County Woman - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 5:04 pm:

A couple of people posted on yesterday’s blog that George Ryan used parts of the HW statement in his race against Quinn for SOS.

and no crying from the peanut gallery back then?

  54. - T.PeterSimmons - Friday, Jan 22, 10 @ 6:41 pm:

I thought Quinn was a reformer? Yet here he is stuffing his pockets with $100,000 in cash from well-known Chicago Fixer. Sheesh!

  55. - McVoter - Saturday, Jan 23, 10 @ 3:23 pm:

“At exactly the same time that the governor is trying to restart “Council Wars” with his counter-attacks on Tom and Dan Hynes and worshipful words about Harold Washington, Quinn’s taking $100,000 from one of the war’s chief architects, Ald.
