*** UPDATED x7 *** Hey, State Board of Elections!
Tuesday, Jul 20, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller * It’s now 9:08 pm. Your website hasn’t updated since 8:09 pm. It’s filing deadline day and yet we have no updates for an hour? And there’s no way to reach anyone after normal business hours? What the heck gives, man? Some of us have work we’d like to finish here. *** UPDATE 1 *** The rant must’ve worked. Thanks. Back to work I go. *** UPDATE 2 *** It’s stuck again. Sheesh. *** UPDATE 3 *** And, we’re back. Good. Hope I don’t jinx it again. *** UPDATE 4 *** If any Senate Republicans are still awake out there, could you get Sam McCann to file his D-2 please? It’s after the midnight deadline and he’s the lone holdout. *** UPDATE 5 *** And he’s filed. Thanks. *** UPDATE 6 *** I’m not doing statewide candidates in the Fax tomorrow, but I just noticed that Rep. David Miller hasn’t filed his D-2 yet for the comptroller’s race. You’d think a comptroller candidate would file financial paperwork on time. It’s now 12:25 AM and no report from Miller. *** UPDATE 7 *** Rep. Miller just filed. An hour late. Not great, either…

lol. rich miller, the most powerful man in illinois (rod blagojevich couldn’t have forced the website to update like that!)…
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 9:30 pm:
Yeah, well, it got stuck again. So the blog ain’t so powerful after all.
- 47th Ward - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 9:36 pm:
Maybe it’s a furlough day…
- raising kane - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:06 pm:
The person in charge of that site needs to be put on permanent furlough.
- Jeff - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:10 pm:
Still curious to see how much Berrios piled up in his fund. Lots of transfers from his various other committees.
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:15 pm:
Robin Kelly hasn’t filed yet, but she just sent out a press release that I’ll share with late night comment browsers…
Statement from Ryan VanMeter, Finance Director for Friends of Robin Kelly
Robin Kelly stands for honest and ethical government and is sending a loud message that Illinois is not for sale. Given Illinois’ history of pay-to-play politics in state government and in past Treasurer’s administrations, Robin is refusing to accept contributions from banks — the primary contractors of the office — along with top bank executives, state contractors and office employees. In contrast, career politician Dan Rutherford’s campaign finance report clearly shows that he is willing to put his administration up for sale by taking contributions from banks and their executives, including those that do business with the Treasurer’s office.
Unlike Rutherford, who has been continuously raising money for the past several years and recently loaned himself $200,000, Robin started her campaign fund just one year ago and her grassroots efforts have raised more than a half million dollars from 1,862 contributors. Unlike Rutherford, Robin also had a contested and costly primary that she won convincingly by taking 94 of 102 counties. As Treasurer, Robin will continue to separate government from politics and eliminate pay-to-play to restore public confidence in our elected officials and move our state forward in the interest of the people of Illinois.
TRANSLATION: She has no money.

Am I reading Cohen’s correctly? He raised $160? And $1.6M in loans from himself? And people take this guy seriously?
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:16 pm:
You read it wrong. He raised $130.00, not 160.
- dave - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:17 pm:
Oops… that’s what I mean.
And wow.
- Jeff - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:20 pm:
Cohen’s campaign fund is completely self-financed. He has put $2.7 million of his own money into the campaign.
I hardly think you need to study his campaign finances in order to not take him seriously, though.
- Reggie P - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:30 pm:
If you are looking for a good laugh as you wait for midnight try Scott Lee Cohen’s website. It includes his stance on “ethics” which I think would remove him from future consideration as a candidate.
It is not enough to continue sending Illinois politicians to jail: clearly, the allure of cash and power is more compelling than the deterrent of jail time. Therefore, Scott proposes ethical reforms that will help elect trustworthy candidates and ensure that a betrayal of public trust is discovered quickly, should it ever occur.
1. Have each candidate take a “Character Test,” drafted by a panel of judges and ethicists, for the purpose of evaluating the character of each candidate. The test must be submitted as a candidacy filing document in Springfield, Illinois and immediately made available to the public on the Internet;
- Rich Miller - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:36 pm:
Yep. I was right. Kelly just reported $143,715.75 in the bank. Not good.
- Reggie P - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:37 pm:
I don’t think Larry Toppert would make a very good county clerk if his bookkeeping is any indication.
- Jeff - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:38 pm:
How can a statewide Democratic candidate have such little cash? Strange.
Also, Berrios raised a lot, but has only $68,000 on hand - compared to more than $500,000 for Claypool. I’m sure Berrios won’t have trouble raising money though.
- Really - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 10:53 pm:
I’m confused doesn’t this mean Quinn only has $703,289.40 on hand not $2.3 million? He also had loans of $700,000. He has received some large Union donations but not much more. I see another report starting in April which is strange.

- dznuts - Tuesday, Jul 20, 10 @ 11:34 pm:
If I were a piece of straw, I would get far away from Robin Kelly’s reach. Kelly’s mouthpiece said “Robin will continue to separate government from politics”… yet, finds nothing wrong with six satellite offices that promote Alexi’s name? I guess when you’re trailing in the polls and in money, they resort to the dastardly title of “career politician”. Someone needs to remind the Kelly camp that Rutherford maintains a job with a Fortune 500 company. I’d put his “career” up against hers anyday.

Has Berrios made some big TV buy for the fall or something? What else would he have spent $870,000 on at this point?

Rich,
I was more curious about the breadth and depth of support after the interesting primary; and vacancy non-appointment, than how much she had on hand, but I als found that a bit surprising, regardless of the opposition.
- wordslinger - Wednesday, Jul 21, 10 @ 7:06 am:
Jason Plummer and family are $1.4 million and counting of their own money into his bid. There’s something weird about a twenty-something spending a fortune for a do-nothing job. I understand it’s a steppingstone, but…
- Really - Wednesday, Jul 21, 10 @ 7:46 am:
I know people discount Jason Plummer but you should really talk to him he is really a sharp person and will be a very good leader.
- Pioneer P. - Wednesday, Jul 21, 10 @ 7:49 am:
Looks like “the people” are really getting behind Claypool too. Anyone see Dan Biss is sitting on $250,000. Robin Kelly should take notes…

==I know people discount Jason Plummer==
Is he on sale at the lumberyard? Until he releases his tax returns, I don’t want to hear what he has to say…
- CircularFiringSquad - Wednesday, Jul 21, 10 @ 8:32 am:
We know Capt Fax is probably snoozing after the exhaustive reporting confirming pols raise money, but let’s make today’s QOTD who will look dumbest or most dumb and/or biggest smucks when Blagoof does not testify?

CFS, possibly the feds if Sam Adam let them think they could hold back tapes for Blago’s cross examination.
- ShadyBillBrady - Wednesday, Jul 21, 10 @ 4:27 pm:
Yep, Really … for fun Brady should go ahead and add in the $7,468.47 cash on hand that Plummer for Illinois has.
