Rose out as CYR prez

Tuesday, Aug 3, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* Jeremy Rose has resigned as president of the Chicago Young Republicans

At the behest of Illinois Republican Party Chair Pat Brady, the president of the Chicago Young Republicans has been ousted amid a growing scandal for the state GOP.

An allegation of sexual misconduct against CYR President Jeremy Rose — and the alleged cover-ups, blind eyes turned and retributions made in its wake — resulted in Rose vacating the post Monday.

Chairman Brady said Rose’s continued involvement with the Young Republicans was “a distraction to what we’re trying to accomplish.”

In addition to being the longtime CYR president, Rose was hired by Cook County Republican Party chairman Lee Roupas as political director in 2009. He was promoted in early 2010 to CCRP Executive Director, though Roupas knew full well of the allegations against Rose. […]

“I told the board of the Young Republicans that Jeremy needed to step down immediately,” Brady said. “The Young Republicans aren’t under my jurisdiction per se, but I did tell the board that it’s time to have Jeremy step down.”

The background is here. As I noted in comments the other day, I can’t help but wonder how the League of Women Voters now feels about giving the CYRs $5,000 during its remap petition drive.

* In more important Chicago news, the Sun-Times reports that nine city aldermen are heading out the door, including Ald. Helen Shiller, who already announced her retirement…

The list of aldermen at least thinking about calling it quits includes such political heavyweights as: Ginger Rugai (19th), Jim Balcer (11th), Frank Olivo (13th), Ed Smith (28th), Vi Daley (43rd), Pat Levar (45th), Mary Ann Smith (48th) and Bernard Stone (50th).

That list doesn’t include Ald. Toni Preckwinkle, who will likely move up to county board chairman, and Ald. Brian Doherty, who is running for the state Senate.

    RE: CYR,

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  2. - Bubs - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 12:44 pm:

Rose was a Brady ally, so this graphically shows the extent of the increasing pressure, externally and internally.

  3. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 12:48 pm:

And the list of ‘retiring’ Alderman rightfully doesn’t include any of the half-dozen who are ’strongly considering’ running for Mayor, since it’s doubtful that even one of them is willing to give up their job to make the run.

  4. - VanillaMan - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 12:49 pm:

Good heavens. Struck out as the Cook County CYR president. Only Burris would write that on a tombstone.

  5. - Ghost - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 1:02 pm:

Rose watched to many epsides of Mad Men.

  6. - Levois - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 1:06 pm:

So we got a few retirements on Chicago’s city council next year! I would look forward to seeing who else isn’t planning to run and who might be angling to take their place. Also would the turnover (or retirements) of Aldermen be a factor as to whether or not Daley chooses to retire next year.

Oh and other than either Fioretti or Waugespak who else from the city council wants to run for mayor?

The Jeremy Rose story is bogus. He sat on a girl’s lap and played keep away with her phone in a flirting manner for 20 seconds. Imprudent yes; “attempted date rape” no. A mountain out of a molehill. Roupas did handle the issue poorly, but the woman who originally complained was even baffled why it’s still an issue. She felt that it was professionally and satisfactorily handled over a year ago and had no problem when Roupas hired Rose earlier this year.

This was politically motivated and fomented by a “Chicago GOP” that is absolutely green with envy of the energy that the CYRs are building in the city. Left-leaning bloggers and anti-establishment GOPers (i.e. whack-job wilderness conservatives like Andy Martin, Dave Diersen, & Doug Ibendahl) were only too happy to magnify the (previously resolved) issue to blunt GOP activity in the city and to score points in a petty intra-party rivalries.

But what’s done is done. Rose is out as CYR president. The rest of the organization is full of solid individuals who are very focused and organized. Assuming the rest of the leadership structure doesn’t fracture, the CYRs will remain as the primary growing driver of GOP activity in the city.

The Sun-times was way off base to declare Doherty the likely victor in the 10th District State Senate race. While his fellow residents of the 41st Ward cop ghetto might be inclined to overlook Doherty’s tendencies to imbibe, I suspect the rest of the district will say a clear “NO” to having a Daley-loving Alderclown represent them in the Illinois Senate.

What a weird world it would be if both the Mayor retired as did Balcer. I doubt it will happen though.

To - Levois - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 1:06 pm: Brendan O’Reilly. He told me so, at a City Club luncheon. We were table-mates.

*And just to clarify, the reason I labeled the aforementioned as “whack-jobs” wasn’t because they are conservative. There are lots of reasonable conservative types that operate within the political eco-system. The reason for the label pertains more to their methods & temperments rather than their political views.

  12. - Siriusly - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 1:33 pm:

The city council will not be the same without Ald. Olivo’s leadership. “Eh!”

  13. - Edison Parker - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 2:17 pm:

FedupDem, I just read the Sun-Times article and, unless they changed it, it doesn’t say Doherty is the likely winner, it says he “could win.”

Plus, it’s not like Mulroe is Mr. Independent. The plan is set. Mulroe lays down. Doherty wins and either Mulroe or Mary O’Connor takes his place as Alderman. It’s win-win for all of them. Doherty backed Mulroe for judge in 2008. They’re all on the same team and it isn’t the “doing the right thing for the District” team.

    You’re dreaming.

Candidates for mayor, RMD, Allen, Reilly, Fioretti, what’s missing from this picture? Add one female, or one hispanic or one black and that person wins. Who will that be?

  16. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 2:57 pm:

I’d be shocked, shocked, if any incumbent Alderman gives up their seat to run.

  17. - CircularFiringSquad - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 3:04 pm:

We are just wondering if there was any other detail Capt Fax left out of YGOP mope ouster item?

I guess that’s why you’ve devoted so much coverage of this CYR scandal over at your blog, Fran. Way to stay on top of the story. You sat on your scoop a bit too long I think.

    Stay classy!

  22. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 5:19 pm:

*Just a guess here, but I sincerely doubt that “Fran Eaton” is indeed Fran Eaton…

  23. - Jake from Elwood - Tuesday, Aug 3, 10 @ 5:23 pm:

Wait…do you mean to say that there is some “sock puppetry” going on?
Gotta try out my new phrase that pays.

Me too. I should probably close this thread out before the crazies come in during the post happy hour period.
