Monday, Oct 11, 2010 - Posted by Rich Miller

* There wasn’t a whole lot of new news on Sunday’s Meet the Press debate between Congressman Mark Kirk and Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. We’ve pretty much seen it all before. Others who haven’t been paying attention might not agree, however. Watch the whole thing if you want

The last question of the debate was the most telling by far. It was submitted online via facebook by someone who asked “name 2 instances on how have you differed from your party on a specific stance/issue.”

Kirk started and gave the example of stem cells and one other issue that was clear and concise. He nailed the question.

Then AG goes and says he would have done TARP differently (to which Gregory said “that was a Republican issue). Oblivious and undeterred, Giannoulias goes into how banks should have had more money (God, the irony) and then turns his answer into an attack on Kirk using the same old talking points and tired meme that he has used the whole campaign.

The Kirk campaign would be smart to take those 30-60 seconds and turn it into a video. It shows Kirk knows the issues and AG is in way over his head.

you mean, mark kirk lies about the issues. kirk was smug, for a reason — he even got david gregory to lie for him!

and it is definitely “made for video.” you may be fooled by mark kirk’s lie (although i don’t really think you are, i suspect that you think it’s okay for kirk to lie to us and to members of congress as long as he’s doing the bidding of whatever powerful man he’s fronting for), but that doesn’t mean i have to be…

    Bored,

Even you can’t offer an example or an instance where AG has split with the Democratic line. Therefore, for him to say he is independent is simply disingenuous.

    Wasn’t exactly Lincoln/Douglas.

I was thinking it’s kind of sad Illinois had to show the nation the sorry choices we’re putting up. But a quick look around the country shows someone always has it worse.

I wonder if Meet the Press is going to schedule a Great Debate with those two stellar Connecticut candidates: the Dem who fantasized about his fighting days in Vietnam, and the family values Republican who ran the soft-porn WWE.

I’m sure they’re saving the Delaware debate for Halloween weekend.

I figured Ohio would be saved for Halloween so Iott could dress up again.

How about AG running against the Democratic party’s slated candidate? It’s no secret in Springfield that the Speaker doesn’t like AG and his legislative proposals are often held up.

    Wow.
bored now has taken delusional conspiracy theories into a new rhelm of partisan insanity.

Like reading Tokyo Rose propaganda three weeks before Japan’s surrender.

Dick Gregory is now shilling for Kirk? You are freaking out completely.

Bottom line Giannoulias lost it and worse handled questions so badly he made national news. He looks more tainted than ever before, thanks to his own weasel words. You would think that after two years Alexi would have been able to spin his banking yarn better than he did.

    Wow. He sucked.

    I meant DAVID Gregory.
