I think Chief Justice Kilbride is quite an impressive win. Look at how Republicans took Rock Island County and Congressman Foster lost - Kilbride was able to get over 60%. MJM can take credit for the win - but to me this race was quite a surprise.
Biggest winner is MJM hands down. He only lost net 5 in the midst of a wave, when everyone was talking about 8 or more and Cross was talking about being Speaker. On top of that he gets the map and Lisa sits in a pretty nice spot. Truly, an up day when it could’ve been much worse.
Not sure. Clearly the republicans made gains in Illinois. But, Dems still control house and senate. Can we get to the point that they work togather? I can only hope.

Where were all of the Republican Party organizations, the committeemen and precinct captains? How is it that Republican voters stayed at home in this election!? The reason Bill Brady lost the governor’s race is due to people taking his victory for granted, which resulted in lazy Republican organizations trying to manufacture ground games.
Oh yes, there were pockets of victories among the Republican winners listed above, yet most of those were to effective campaigning and significant amounts of money, and not the product of a genuine grassroots ground game. For Republicans like Steve Rauschenberger, Ruth Munson and Billie Roth to lose their races must be laid at the door of the local Republican Party organizations at the county and township levels.

I don’t know that there are any really BIG winners or losers yesterday.
Republicans return to Washington in the driver’s seat and Democrats maintain majorities in Springfield.
But as we have all witnessed in recent years, there’s a big difference between majority and “control.”
Quinn, assuming he holds on, Madigan and Cullerton return to Springfield, where the same budget problems await.
In a sane world, Republicans will drop the partisan pretenses and pass a tax increase…maybe Topinka is up for that, we’ll see.
And Speaker Boehner now has to contend with the likes of Congressman Walsh — yikes.

Now perhaps the President will come off his pedestal and stop his teleprompter lectures and switch from being a redeemer to becoming a leader. He is an llinoisan who needs a lecture.

Other Big Losers behind the headlines:
Ed Murnane. Not only wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars only to be repudiated, but manages to completely trash the Illinois Civil Justice League’s reputation in the process. Every race Murnane touches moving forward will invite headlines about his smear tactics.
Tom Cross? I dunno. House Republicans pick up a few seats, but not what they should have, and they are not pro-choice moderate Republicans. Cross could lose a well-organized fight for minority leader.
Cullerton and the Senate Dems are big winners in my book. With so much supposedly in play, they barely got scratched.
I do think that the Democratic Party is looking at a rebuilding year…and that’s probably good for them in the long-run. While I expect the GOP to become more Tea Partyish in Illinois, expect the Democrats to become more decentralized and Grassroots.
Look for Democrats to move away from a partisan agenda and back to Kitchen Table issues: Family and Medical Leave, foreclosure reform, more “small” bills and local issues.
Prognosis for a tax increase? Hard to say. Most folks on both sides privately admit its necessary and inevitable, and I don’t think the Tribune and GOP can continue to stonewall with ridiculous demands that we retroactively reduce the retirement benefits of current teachers, police and firefighters.
Winner: Tom Kilbride. Showed that on occasion, rationality can win out over a well-funded smear campaign.
Loser: Phil Hare. Demonstrated that a congressional district that was gerrymandered to ensure Lane Evans was always re-elected wasn’t enough to keep him in the job.
Thanks. If that’s the case and it was a D that was pulled out of a hat, then I’d suspect the map would stand to go more in favor of the D’s in a marginal fashion, but not a radical revision as some R’s fear.
Still, I see this race as being totally bipolar for Illinois. The federal races vs. the state races.

Rich Miller mocked those who questioned the Rasmussen polls in August and september which all but gave Brady the election. So I say Rich is a loser in this election along with Claypool and Brady.

Any and all individuals in Illinois with a Republican Party title, beginning with Republican State Chairman Pat Brady, and every Republican Party county chairman in Illinois. LOSING the governor’s race to Governor Quinn, who was being given up for dead 3 months ago, and seeing the pathetic voter turnout numbers across the state in Republican-leaning geographies is truly snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
Where were all of the Republican Party organizations, the committeemen and precinct captains? How is it that Republican voters stayed at home in this election!? The reason Bill Brady lost the governor’s race is due to people taking his victory for granted, which resulted in lazy Republican organizations trying to manufacture ground games.
Oh yes, there were pockets of victories among the Republican winners listed above, yet most of those were to effective campaigning and significant amounts of money, and not the product of a genuine grassroots ground game. For Republicans like Steve Rauschenberger, Ruth Munson and Billie Roth to lose their races must be laid at the door of the local Republican Party organizations at the county and township levels.

I don’t know that there are any really BIG winners or losers yesterday.
Republicans return to Washington in the driver’s seat and Democrats maintain majorities in Springfield.
But as we have all witnessed in recent years, there’s a big difference between majority and “control.”
Quinn, assuming he holds on, Madigan and Cullerton return to Springfield, where the same budget problems await.
In a sane world, Republicans will drop the partisan pretenses and pass a tax increase…maybe Topinka is up for that, we’ll see.
And Speaker Boehner now has to contend with the likes of Congressman Walsh — yikes.

Personally, I couldn’t be happier. I did not like either Quinn or Brady, but did want Kirk.As I predicted a month ago, I was going to see the biggest Congressional shift in my lifetime, and I did. Now perhaps the President will come off his pedestal and stop his teleprompter lectures and switch from being a redeemer to becoming a leader. He is an llinoisan who needs a lecture.

**Not to derail the thread, but I wasn’t around back in 2000 & 2001. I keep hearing conflicting information RE: redistricting back then. I thought Ryan was the governor and Pate Philip was in control of the senate. Doesn’t that mean the current map is GOP drawn? But I also keep hearing well-informed politicos that the CURRENT map is actually a Madigan creation. If that’s so, then how is it that the map would get THAT more tilted than it already is?

Other Big Losers behind the headlines:
Ed Murnane. Not only wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars only to be repudiated, but manages to completely trash the Illinois Civil Justice League’s reputation in the process. Every race Murnane touches moving forward will invite headlines about his smear tactics.
Tom Cross? I dunno. House Republicans pick up a few seats, but not what they should have, and they are not pro-choice moderate Republicans. Cross could lose a well-organized fight for minority leader.
Cullerton and the Senate Dems are big winners in my book. With so much supposedly in play, they barely got scratched.
I do think that the Democratic Party is looking at a rebuilding year…and that’s probably good for them in the long-run. While I expect the GOP to become more Tea Partyish in Illinois, expect the Democrats to become more decentralized and Grassroots.
Look for Democrats to move away from a partisan agenda and back to Kitchen Table issues: Family and Medical Leave, foreclosure reform, more “small” bills and local issues.
Prognosis for a tax increase? Hard to say. Most folks on both sides privately admit its necessary and inevitable, and I don’t think the Tribune and GOP can continue to stonewall with ridiculous demands that we retroactively reduce the retirement benefits of current teachers, police and firefighters.

Biggest winners are Mark Kirk and Illinois Republican US House winners. Biggest losers are Chicago Tribune, Andy Shaw, Carol Marin, and SouthTown reporter Kristen McQuery. Never have I seen such scathing and biased reporting on Mike Madigan and Joe Berrios. Come on, just because they are old time politicians and have power does not make them bad people. The average reader would almost think these guys served jail time or were about to get indicted. Whatever happened to real reporting without an agenda. It makes a lot of folks like me vote for them because people are sick and tired of the propaganda. They need to do some real reporting on issues like home foreclosures, the unemployed, and the homeless. Your educated citizen would appreciate that.

Quinn and Brady are too easy.
The biggest winner is Mike Madigan. He and his team performed very well in a bad year with the “mo” against the Dems. The “firewall” worked. Madigan still has enough seats to push controversial legislation through his chamber.
The biggest loser is Tom Cross. He needs to go. Six seats is good - but not when you were down by 22 and in the midst of the “tsunami”. Dan Brady would make for a good House GOP leader.
