The “overage” in the firefighters’ mileage reimbursements are probably not unique. One way for public servants at every level to give themselves an informal pay increase is through “aggressive” reimbursement claims. And many public servants do some or the bulk of their work in the field.
In the 21st century, this is probably an easy problem to solve through technology. With the right us of gps systems, there is no reason why any government employee in “the field” shouldn’t
be easily tracked as to location and mileage. Trucking companies do it now, I believe.
No doubt there would be resistance from employee unions. But that’s a reason to do it. And while the initial installation of technology would be expensive, the long-time savings would be considerable. Add to that a possible improvement in public trust of government management of resources. I doubt too many Chicagoans gasped in surprise at the supposed “overcharging” by the firefighters.

LOL at Rev. Meeks, he is mad that the Black Coalition will not endorse him. Does anyone remember when he refused to endorse Dorothy Brown for Mayor because he did not want to endorse a loser? Well maybe the Black Coalition feels the same way. Although I don’t know how big of a chance Danny Davis has in this race.
