*** UPDATED x2 - Rep. Collins replaces Hendon - SLC doesn’t make the cut *** Rickey Hendon replacement live-blog
Monday, Mar 14, 2011 - Posted by Rich Miller * Monique Garcia of the Tribune is live-Tweeting the replacement for retired Sen. Rickey Hendon. I’ve set the ScribbleLive program to autofollow her as well as Charles Thomas from ABC7. I’ll add Tweets from others as they come in if I can… Discuss. *** UPDATE 1 *** Monique Garcia reports that Scott Lee Cohen is out of the running. Cohen had pledged to run for the seat after redistricting if he wasn’t appointed. We should know the results by 3:45 this afternoon. *** UPDATE 2 *** State Rep. Annazette Collins got the appointment.

When is Cohen finally going away? Or is he going to be one of these guys that media dopes always placate?
- hammer - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 2:31 pm:
Sounds like Cohen is indicating that you can give him the seat now or he’s taking it next cycle. Better pick a strong opponent, guys.

I’m assuming it’s Bruce Jackson getting hammered by Jesse White.
If Jesse White is pounding you at a meeting of West Side committeeman, you might just want to pack it in.

Sneed — I should be state senator ‘Natch, Sugar Rothbord and the Burkes said so while dining at Gibsons.
Get it, forget it….
Yes I know it is not the same sneed..

“Meeting to appoint somebody to the Hendon senate seat. First one to show up in a suit and shoes in matching primary colors gets my vote.”
LOL!
- levois - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 3:02 pm:
“Residency questions for candidate Harold Davis. But committee will let him proceed with presentation for now.”
Is this the Harold Davis who you may see on CAN-TV on weekend mornings? He may be more of a rabble rouser than a state Senator. Although hey he’d be a fitting replacement for Hendon. Especially if you want “Hollywood” behavior.

Anyone know who are the committeemen and their weighted votes? Are they all there?
- OneMan - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 3:13 pm:
Scott Lee Cohen did not make cut for Hendon seat…..
bummer, but he will be there when the seat is up.
- Ghost - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 3:14 pm:
Just lets a computer run the dist. program in hendons responses and let a random number generator select how to resond to any given issue based on past choices from Hendon

I would like to see the media coverage on that.

This man has more political staying power than most. He should start a new show - call it Spawn Stars.

What is the signal for when a new Senaotr has been selected? White smoke is for a new pope, but black smoke rising from on the west side is unfortunately all too common.
Maybe their will be a beacon in the night sky kind of like in the old Batman episodes. What would the symbol inside the beacon be however, and what would that represent?
Once a replacement Senator in place how soon will we get “no longer a subject” Press Release for Rickey from USAO on South Dearborn
- Quinn T. Sential - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 3:38 pm:
{White estimates committee will take 30 minutes to make Hendon replacement pick.}
In other words the selection has already been made, and the rest of the time after the perfunctory vote will be used to warm up the “spin machine”

Aren’t we Lincoln County commoners paying Fritchey about 90 large for his services? Doesn’t he have anything better to do than tweet endlessly about this relatively insignificant matter?
- hammer - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:08 pm:
It’s gotta be Collins. I don’t want to be cynical but she’s Afam in an Afam seat, she’s established, well credentialed, thoughtful and could likely win re-election. I’m not enthused that she’s trying to ram her daughter down our throats but let’s just get this over with.
- amalia - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:10 pm:
thanks for the ScribbleLive coverage, Rich. feel better!
- Quinn T. Sential - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:10 pm:
Why didn’t they just end the suspense and jointly name her daughter as her successor in the House at the same time?
- Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:12 pm:
QTS, he’s not tweeting “endlessly.” He updated his Twitter account a few times. I really don’t get what your problem is here.
- Precinct Captain - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:13 pm:
@ Quinn T. Sential: B/c doing so would make it seem like there was no democratic process. Lol
- Quinn T. Sential - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:27 pm:
Rich; my problem is that while before; I did not live in his district, so he was not really my concern, but I do live in Cook County, and so now I have a greater interest. He is getting paid $85K of our money for a part time job, and he is using his time to feed the narcissistic beast within in order to keep us updated on someone who in effect is just 1/58th of the Illinois Senate and who’s vote will already be a lock for cullerton on almost anything controversial.
As a Cook County taxpayer I would rather get a little better ROI on the $85K, and leave the updating to the media.
- Rich Miller - Monday, Mar 14, 11 @ 4:32 pm:
===leave the updating to the media. ===
Always a good idea. [/snark]

So what else should he be doing while sitting in that room? What added benefit to Cook County should he have been able to add if he were not tweeting?

How about avoiding the meeting altogether and sent a vote by proxy. The result was a foregone conclusion anyway.
Then instead of playing politics he could have focused his time and attention on governing. Despite the recently passed budget their is still plenty of fat to be trimmed from the evil empire, and I’d rather he focus his time and attention on that.

From talking to those inside, it was far from a foregone conclusion. Subscribers will know more tomorrow.

I hope we can look forward to more complete—and timely–campaign finance disclosure reports from Senator Collins.
