We always went for batting practice which was an event in itself as you can imagine. Speaking of Roberto Clemente, during warms ups when he was just goofing around he caught a fielding practice fly ball near the wall in Wrigley Field and threw it in the air on the fly for a strike to home plate just for kicks. Everybody just stood there in amazement. I also saw Larry Doby for the Cleveland Indians hit a still rising line drive off the brick wall in center field at Comiskey Park about 20 feet up. The best overall player I’ve ever seen in person was skinny Barry Bonds when he was on the Pirates. Five tool player. The players you’d stop whatever you were doing to watch hit were Mike Schmidt and Frank Thomas. Schmidt seemed to hit three taters every time he came to Wrigley. Thomas just may have been the best right-handed hitter of all time. Ichiro is unique. He doesn’t strike out, he doesn’t walk, he puts the ball in play just about every plate appearance. You’d have to be out of your mind to dig in against that guy. Curiously, I saw an interview one time with Gibson and he said the best pitcher he ever saw was Seaver. As great as Seaver was, I think Gibson was being generous. I don’t think Bob Gibson ever put himself second to anyone in anything ever. Having said that, I’ve really enjoyed over the years the craftsmanship of Jenkins, Maddux and Buehrle. Real artists. Neither Maddux or Buehrle could break glass with their fastballs, but when they were hitting their spots, you couldn’t do anything with them. Years ago, I snuck down to the Tribbie seats behind home, put my feet on the bricks and watched Maddux put a Golden Sombrero on Big Cat Gallaraga. O Fascinating to watch — changing pitches, changing speeds, changing locations. I was definitely not a big fan of Pete Rose (overrated slap hitter, had no real position in the field), but I almost caught his last career home run in the bleachers at Wrigley when he was player/manager for the Reds. And on a cold rainy day at Wrigley, I saw the great Johnny Bench try to extend his career by playing his first game at third base. The Cubs lead-off hitter, nasty Larry Bowa, bunted the first pitch down the third base line and Bench booted it eight ways to Sunday. He retired a few days later. Nasty Larry Bowa.
