Question of the day

Friday, Jun 8, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller

* It’s Friday, so let’s talk about something besides politics.

The White Sox are in St. Louis next week to play the Cardinals. Instead of a question, how about we do some serious trash talking ahead of the three-game series? Cub fans are not allowed to comment.

Enjoy.

…Adding… With a hat tip to a commenter for reminding me, here’s a photo of a typical Cardinals fan…

Heh.

Not much trashy to say. We like and respect the Sox, especially now that that whack job Ozzie is gone. By the way, we don’t hate the Cubs. We think they’re cute.

  2. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:00 am:

===We like and respect the Sox===

Yeah, well, you won’t like us when we come to town. lol

  3. - Waffle Fries - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:01 am:

Just keep throwing fastballs to David Freese…he probably won’t jump on them.

  4. - Generation X - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:02 am:

Just so the Sox fans don’t get confused, the people sitting in the seats cheering are called fans. In St. Louis people actually watch the games in person.

  5. - Rich Miller - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:07 am:

By the way, I do like STL. We were in St. Louis last night and had a very nice dinner at a great little French place.

But, man, it’s a small city. A couple of weeks ago, a few of us had dinner at Mike Shannon’s near the stadium and then went up to a rooftop for skyline view drinks. We got on the elevator and the top floor was 8. “There must be another elevator up to the roof,” I figured. Nope. 8 was as high as it went. But the skyline was very nice.

Still, 8 floors up and you still get an unobstructed view of downtown? Kinda weird.

Prediction: The Sox will sweep those small-town boys.

Konercko hits better with one good hand, than any redbird, no matter how much you pay them.

Our young pitchers may throw hard, but they’re accurate. We have so many good closers, we don’t have time to negotiate.

  7. - Interested Observer - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:12 am:

Hope your guy Konerko is dong better cause he’s going to have to be with Beltran, Furcal, Freese, Wainwright, Holiday and Lance Lynn going against ya’ll - I’m thinking we may get a sweep!

  8. - Frank - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:12 am:

Here’s a picture of a typical Cardinal Fan:

===I’m thinking we may get a sweep! ===

    You’re insane.

We’ve won 7 of our past 10 games and we’re 17-9 on the road and in first place. Y’all are barely playing .500 ball.

Then again, if you were saying that you’re thinking you may get swept, well, you’re totally sane and I apologize.

    heh.

  10. - Joe W. - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:28 am:

I think the guy is really a sox fan - just a bit confused.

  11. - Frank - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:31 am:

And just so i can win the thread, here’s a picture of a typical white sox fan:

  12. - Magoo - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:31 am:

Baseball Team is measured by it’s championships not the size of it’s buildings. I think that makes St.Louis …..

  13. - That Guy - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:33 am:

I sure hope I can get a Miller Lite at the games. I don’t want to have to drink a foreign beer like Budweiser while watching a first place ball club.

  14. - Easy - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:37 am:

So that’s a hybrid Sox/Cards fan. Makes sense.

  15. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:38 am:

I think the Cardinal fan that has the placard was not intending to spell Moron. I think he was sending a message to his best friend in Chicago, Joe Morans…you know Joe with the big left ear, yea, that guy from the south side-you know whad mean!! He has the punctuation correct otherwise the exclamation mark would have preceded the “MORANS”.. :-)

  16. - FrankCastle - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:38 am:

I’m big Sox fan. Never had issue with Cards fans. Nice folks, Mutual opponent. This Bud’s for you.

  17. - Ray del Camino - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:40 am:

Those red triangles with years written on them–those are called World Series pennants. Just so ya know. And you’ll be drinking a decent Bud while watching a World Champion ball club.

    Scrubs.

  18. - Jim - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:43 am:

Despite Rich’s best efforts, I don’t think he can whip up much animosity between Cards and Sox fans.
As a Cardinals fan, I root for the Sox. Besides, we both know the enemy of my enemy (the Cubs) is my friend.

  20. - Anon - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:49 am:

    Let’s all look at some #s: Beckham’s up to .229, Dunn’s at .215, and Ramirez is at .213. Oh, Orlando Hudson’s at .188, but Morel’s at .177.
Konerko is total class, and AJP’s had a great career, but after those 2 it’s a pretty thin crew, though Robin V’s a huge upgrade in adult sanity over Ozzie….

  21. - House of Pain - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:51 am:

    Nice sign Bird Brain!

  22. - Political junkie - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 11:57 am:

Rich I will agree that stl is a smaller town than Chicago but that is its charm. And you must not have gone to the rooftop at the Hilton because that is 26 floors up. Oh and cards take 2 out of 3

  23. - Ronald RayGun - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:00 pm:

Clearly the sign reads “Get a Brain! -Morans.”

That man’s name is Morans. Now don’t you feel silly?

  24. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:08 pm:

Road trip!!! Wednesday. Seats behind home plate a few rows up. Go You White Sox!!

There’s a rumor floating around that with the doomed Cubs wanting to shed payroll and looking to build from scratch with youngsters, Dempster might be headed to the Sox. What do y’all think of that idea?

  25. - Nuance - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:08 pm:

The guy with the sign just wrote it the way it sounds when spoken in Missouri with a little southern twang! You think it is supposed to be “morons” but it really is “more runs”.

  26. - nothin's easy - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:10 pm:

I thought that picture was of a “tea” party…just sayin’

  28. - Freese Warning - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:12 pm:

===Konercko hits better with one good hand, than any redbird===

Judging by the spelling of “Konercko,” it seems that the true identity of the Cards fan pictured has been revealed. Thanks, mark walker!

===Just keep throwing fastballs to David Freese…he probably won’t jump on them.===

That’s what Neftali Feliz thought in W.S. Game 6 last year, too, Waffle Fries. Sheesh.

  29. - Nuance - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:18 pm:

Just try saying it over and over in a sentence and you will understand what I meant above: “We got morans dan uze did!”.

  30. - Wensicia - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:19 pm:

If we Cubs fans are banned from this thread, at least have the decency to refrain from commenting on the team.

  31. - 3rd Generation Chicago Native - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:20 pm:

    Generation X …..
Just so the Sox fans don’t get confused, the people sitting in the seats cheering are called fans. In St. Louis people actually watch the games in person

Written by someone who has never been to a White Sox Game Obviously. I was there again last night to watch the Sox beat the BlueJays, and every fan who was there cheered for everyone of our guys by named, sighed when a play was not good.

The week before I was at a Cubs game (yes I defected one game) a Cubs game is so you can get up and drink before the game, during the game and after the game.

The Cardinals will be the first away game for the Sox in a month, at least it’s not too far. I hope they just slam dunk the series.

The Sox worry about hanging on to first place, and other teams worry about a goat.
    Enough said.

  32. - lake county democrat - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:21 pm:

City Museum = best children’s museum ever.

As others have mentioned, how can Sox fans hate on the Cardinals? They’ve done a magnificent job keeping the Cubs down over the years, plus any small market that supports baseball to the degree St. Louis does deserves props. Will be pulling for the Sox, but it’s friendly competition all the way!

  33. - lake county democrat - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:24 pm:

Seriously, if you’re in St. Louis check this place out (even if you’re not a kid) - it’s walking distance from the ballpark. http://www.citymuseum.org/site/

  34. - Blago's Hare - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:24 pm:

In baseball, The only number that really matters is the number of World Series Championships. St. Lou has 11, entire city of Chicago has 5. The Cards will win two of three next week.

  35. - vise77 - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:35 pm:

As a Cards fan in Chicago, let me say that STL fans have more than a bit of growing up to do to reach the level of Sox fandom. All we do is send a streaker onto the field, and maybe a squirrel from time to time. The Sox fans beat up umpires (and blow up records if you really want to put the DeLorean into overdrive).

Hey, Sox fans: Maybe after your next championship–whenever that might be–you will manage to sell out a few more games the next season.

Sox are actually my second fav team, and Paulie my fav player over there. But not during the series, of course.

  36. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:37 pm:

Wensicia–if I were you I’d test Rich’s resolve and comment anyway. I mean, what’s the worst that can happen?

  37. - Southern Peggy R - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:38 pm:

We’re heading to tonight’s game against the Indians who are a leading team in the AL I hear. (what’s the AL after all?). It’s Little League night at Busch Memorial Hospital (as Harry Carey (spell?) once famously said.

The Cards are having a hard time selling tix for AL games it appears.

We will also be at the W Sox game on Tuesday. Not quite a Blues-Hawks home-at-home weekend.

Go Cards. If some major players are back on the field, we should be good to win 2 of 3. Maybe sweep.

    Twelve in ‘12!

  38. - Robert - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:39 pm:

Sox Fans visiting St. Louis will be pleased to discover that unlike Cub fans, Cardinal fans do watch the game.

Chicago still has a second team? I thought I saw Mark Buerhle pitching with a Florida uniform, so I was guessing the Sox ownership finally wised up and moved out of the Cubs’ town.

  39. - Jimmy87 - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:44 pm:

    Headline on Gawker this morning:

“Missouri Walmart Evacuated After Detained Shoplifter Starts Cooking Meth Inside Loss Prevention Office”

    http://gawker.com/5916835/missouri-walmart-evacuated-after-detained-shoplifter-starts-cooking-meth-inside-loss-prevention-office

St. Louis, it’s like a little slice of Florida right here in the midwest.

  40. - LincolnLounger - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:47 pm:

If the Cards can’t win, I’m all about the Sox. It won’t be easy stirring up hatred between these two teams.

  41. - Responsa - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:49 pm:

A million tears ago when I was just out of college and starting my career I attended a winter symposium (OK, boondoggle) where Ernie Banks was a featured guest. It was very cool to meet him. I recall that he ended his highly optimistic remarks with the words, “and we’ll be second to none in ‘81″. Does he still do those rhymes? If so, does anybody know what his Cubs quote was for this season?

  42. - Mouthy - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:50 pm:

Too bad they both can’t lose*

    *Sorry rouge Cub fan comment.

===I’m thinking we may get a sweep! ===

Not a chance but I would root for two out of three.

  43. - chathamite - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:51 pm:

Always remember the “Cardinal” rules of baseball from the 11-time champs:
    1) Play in October
    2) Win the last game

The Cardinal bats got hot last night and they’re going to roll right through the Sox series…enjoy the 6 hour train ride back to the south side Sox fans, it’s going to be a sad one!

  44. - Wensicia - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:54 pm:

    @Responsa,

Since the Cards are going to wipe out the Sox, I don’t feel it’s necessary to test Rich’s patience.

This year, I’m cheering for St. Louis since the Cubs are out of it.

  45. - Shore - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 12:58 pm:

Actually that picture is what cubs fans think of white sox fans.

  46. - East Sider - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 1:22 pm:

The Sox go 87 years in between WS titles. In St. Louis, we don’t fool around that long. In fact, we have won 2 since the pale hose had their miracle run in 2005.

It is cute that the Sox have 9 little playoff appearances, though.

  47. - otownie - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 1:34 pm:

Obviously the woman in the picture is a Cub fan, Cardinal ladies always have matching earrings.

  48. - John A Logan - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 1:48 pm:

You just can’t argue with 11 Championship banners. Stan Musial, Jack Buck, Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Bob Gibson, Curt Flood, Tony LaRussa, the list never ends. Saint Louis stands for winning, class, and leadership. Click the link for another example of why the Cardinals are simply the best team in baseball period. http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/stl/schedule/tv_radio_affiliates.jsp

The White Sox legacy? An 88 year championship drought, the black sox scandal, disco demolition night, big hurt beer, and they play at dropped call stadium.

    Cards take 2 of 3

  49. - Ron Burgundy - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 1:49 pm:

Lifelong Cards fan from Metro East that moved to Chicago in 1993, adopted the Sox and now live in prime Sox territory in Orland Park. Went to a Sox game last week but my first love is and always will be the Redbirds. St. Louis fans are more numerous and more passionate, but the Polish with onions at the Cell (Sox Park) is awesome.

No conflict here, unlike those folks who claim to be both Sox and Cubs fans. *gives John Cusack the evil eye*

Like someone said earlier, though not in a Bridgeport accent: “Da enemy of my enemy is my frent, my frent!”

Close series, but give me the Redbirds 2 out of 3.

  50. - anon - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 1:53 pm:

The Belgians came to show you how to brew good beer and the Cubans are coming to teach you a little sumthin about baseball. Better hope it gets real cold this weekend.

  51. - Ray del Camino - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:09 pm:

Let’s talk about World Championships–not only in raw numbers, but *per capita*!

  52. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:27 pm:

LaRussa could still recite the whole alphabet when he managed the Sox.

Of course, he made up for his ABCs shortcoming on the Cardinals with a PhD in GHB and other pharmaceuticals.

  53. - Anonymous - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:28 pm:

Sox are bringing back Wilbur Wood for the series. The ol’knuckle baller is scheudled to start all three games. Cardinal batters screw themselves into the ground wiffing at the floater. Sox sweep. cardinals go into season long batting slump

  54. - gregory tejeda - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:29 pm:

Listening to Cardinals fans go on about how they have the second-most number of World Series championships is so trite. The only team that can seriously boast about the total championship number is the New York Yankees. They dwarf everybody. Listening to Cardinals fans claim “we’re number two” is even more pathetic than listening to Aurora people claim they’re the second-largest city in Illinois. It may be true, but it’s not even close to Number One.

    -30-

  55. - Deep South - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:36 pm:

The Sox are coming to St. Louis to face the defending World Series champs. Let me repeat that: defending World Series champs!

In any event, Cards fans always welcome classy teams and players who know how to play the game. Which explains why we’re so rude to the Cubs.

  56. - Coyote Chris - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:48 pm:

What? This is merely a comment on the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre when those Bugsy Moran guys got shot up. Only a bunch of dummies would get caught like that, so the sign points out that the Moran gang needed to think more creatively.

    Cards take 2 0f 3

  57. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 2:55 pm:

A note to Sox fans visiting St. Louis….bring home some Schlafly’s.

  58. - Kerfuffle - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 3:09 pm:

As a Cardinal fan, I could get into some trash talk with Sox fans if it were the World Series…..but a 3 game series before the All-Star break….not so much. I just want to watch some good baseball and would much prefer that my guys come out on top.

  59. - wordslinger - Friday, Jun 8, 12 @ 3:34 pm:

City Museum is way cool. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but it’s not just a kids museum.

My kids loved it, but I could drink beer, smoke, play old-time pinball and listen to trippy tunes in the beatnik bar there. Can’t do that at Navy Pier Children’s Museum.

I’d recommend Hannegan’s on LeClede’s Landing and Fitz’s Root Beer out west. And any place on The Hill, long as you know where you’re going.

Don’t go up in the Arch unless you enjoy enclosed spaces and entrust rusty old hydraulics.

  62. - wordslinger - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 7:58 am:

Hemingway said his hometown of Oak Park was a place of broad lawns and small minds.

It’s on those broad lawns that we small-minded folks teach our kids how to play baseball and softball, year in and year out, from when the snow melts in the spring to when it starts to fly again in the winter.

Here’s to the young men from OPRF High School, the State of Illinois 4A baseball champs.

On a scorching hot Saturday night at beautiful Silver Cross Field in downtown Joliet, they won a thriller to take the title from defending champ Lyons.

Baseball and softball are the community religion in Oak Park. I’ve known a lot of those young men since they were babies and have watched most of them play ball, hundreds of times, since they first stepped up to a tee at Maple Park on Harlem and the Ike.

It was a great pleasure to join old baseball friends from over the years to cheer them on to the state title.

Some of players went with no-sleep from after the game Saturday night to commencement at the old stadium on Lake Street Sunday afternoon.

Judging from graduation parties last night, some of them still might not be ready to go to sleep. It was a weekend of a lifetime, and who would want it to end?

  63. - Anonymous - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 12:45 pm:

I know you said I couldn’t comment if I am a CUBS fan. What if I only play one to get my Reps dander up? He loves to banter and sling insults. I can’t take that away from him. Same goes for my husband, son and Grandson. They love the sox and HATE the CUBS. I love to torture them. Sox fans are so touchy!
