Question of the day

Monday, Jun 11, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller

* I’m not feeling well. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t get back to sleep. Now I’m beat, and kinda ill. I’m going back to bed for a while.

* Anyway, you may have seen this story late Friday afternoon

Mayor Rahm Emanuel, known for his temper and willingness to go toe-to-toe, reportedly lost it with Gov. Pat Quinn in a recent phone call.

A political source with knowledge of the situation who declined to be named told Ward Room Emanuel is upset Quinn wants stronger ethics rules when it comes to gaming.

I was told by the governor’s office that “the real reason Mayor Emanuel got so angry was because the governor told him in no uncertain terms that he would not sign the gambling bill without ethics improvements.”

* The Question: Recreate the conversation. But do so without profanity. Yes, I know that’s almost impossible to do since we’re talking about Rahm Emanuel here, but try it anyway. Thanks.

Emanuel: Look you ‘Money-Funder’, I have a crumbling infrastructure and no ‘funding’ money to pay for revitalization. I need this ‘funding’ casino.

Quinn: Sorry, Rahm, I just don’t feel comfortable signing a bill without stronger ethics controls.

Emanuel: ‘Fund’ that! I need the ‘funding’ money to ‘funding’ fund my projects! You’re ’scrooging’ the wrong guy here.

Nah. I got nothing. I just wanted to write ‘funding’ a bunch.

E: What’s new there peanut butter?
Q: Hey, Hey…nada, I’m just chilling at the mansion.
    (both laugh)
E: Anyway, I read one of my 5 free monthly Sun-Times articles online and it said you wouldn’t sign the casino bill because of ethics.
Q: That’s right, I find it unethical that everyone else is getting money BUT ME. I have feelings too y’know.
E: I know Patty. Here’s the rub, if you don’t give me my casino I’m going to force your favorite Dairy Queen to close down.
Q: What! Noooooo. I like their parfaits and I’m collecting the replicate baseball helmet bowls. Dammit.
E: Hey, watch your mouth. I am the Mayor!
    (both laugh)
    ** end scene **

Rahm: Hey Governor I am concerned about your stated intent to veto the gaming bill.

Quinn: Yes, I feel it does not protect ethics enough and also it would require Jaffe to do something to move gaming forward and he has a doctors note saying he is allergic to games of chance and anything to do with them.

Rahm: I swear both of you are a couple of ‘Marshal Fields’.

Quinn: Don’t blame me, I would be happy to sign it, but when Jaffe comes in my office to complain that we don’t have a provision to embed a tracking and monitoring chip on everyone who works for, enters or knows how to spell casino in the state.

Rahm: Well just tell him no…

Quinn: I try but then he begins cursing such a blue streak I have to capitulate, you know how poorly I cam deal with a guy cursing…

Rahm: Yeah, I was counting on using that with you until Rich Miller forced me to stop swearing.

Quinn: But at least the state will have video poker by 2020 using the current time line.

i can’t imagine a heated conversation with rahm that didn’t include profuse amounts of profanity — especially if rahm wasn’t getting what he wanted…

Quinn: Ethics, blah blah blah, controls, blah blah blah ethics.

Rahm: And you didn’t mention this to me in April when we talked because???

Quinn: I have been talking about this a lot, just ask the Oak Park Middle Schoolers who I reached out to with 8 days left in the session.

Emanuel: Someone get Axelrod on the phone! I want my old job back; off-color language isn’t effective against this governor. I want to return to D.C. where my $#@%ing orders are appreciated and followed!

  13. - Boone Logan Square - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 10:58 am:

  16. - NIref - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 11:50 am:

Q: I want ethics reforms with the new gaming bill.
E: Good sir, by whatever do you mean?
Q: I will veto the gaming bill unless I get stronger, yet unspecified, ethics standards.
E: My fellow colleague from the South, that is an idea unlike any other! From where did this flamboyant idea come from?
Q: I follow the people, and the people get what they want. You know, I am Soy Boy.
E: Sir, I do believe you have been quite economical in your assumptions about the good people of Illinois. My dear colleague, it appears that you do not have full command of your faculties. Might I suggest retiring for the evening while a most-qualified candidate do the bidding?

  17. - William Ligue - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 12:03 pm:

This is sort of like editing Scarface or Raging Bull for TV:

“Ethics? I got your freaking ethics right here pal. If you don’t sign that bill I’m going to fake you in the grass. Don’t fool with me you stupid mother faker.”

  18. - amalia - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 1:08 pm:

R: I need the freakin’ casino. I need the money for Chicago.

P: what are you worried about? didn’t you see the first episode of
“Mob Wives: Chicago”? You can do a version for several neighborhoods in Chicago. The boutiques will bring in a fortune!

  19. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 2:55 pm:

QUINN: I respect that; Rahm ask me anything else. But this is one favor I can’t give.

RAHM: I don’t ask a second favor once I’ve been refused the first, understood?

QUINN: You don’t understand. Chicago never gets that casino. It’s perfect for the City, it’ll make you (Rahm) a big star. And I’m gonna run this state my way, and let me tell you why.

    (then, QUINN, after he stands)

You ruined one of Illinois’ most valuable proteges; Alexi G. For five years we had him under training. Speaking lessons; acting lessons, “song and dancing” lessons. Alexi spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on this. I was gonna help make him a big star, send him to Washington when the time was RIGHT, never to return. And let me be even more frank, just to show you that I’m not a hard-hearted man, and it’s not all dollars and cents about the former Treasurer.

He was beautiful; he was young, he was as innocent as I could find in a candidate. He was the greatest young mouthpiece I have seen in my travels all over the world! And then Rahm Emanuel comes along with his Axelrod knowledge, and “Chicago way” charm. And he runs for Senate and loses. He threw it all away just to make me look ridiculous! And a man in my position can’t afford to be made to look ridiculous! Now you
get the hell outta here! And if you try any rough stuff, I ain’t no teachers’ union president! Yeah, I heard that story….

RAHM: Thank you for the conversation and a very pleasant evening. If your car could take me home …

OW, that was the best Godfather reference yet.

  21. - Oswego Willy - Monday, Jun 11, 12 @ 3:11 pm:

    Thanks!

It always comes back to the Corleones …
