* Steve Rosenbloom at the Tribune

And the whole Cubs’ way of doing business these days is weening the idiot franchise off the warm-and-fuzzy loser mentality.

Really? How do you ween Cub fans off the loser mentality when the team you’re fielding is just six “L’s” away from losing 100 games?

Meanwhile, Go Sox. Lost a few games there, but still leading the division by one.

And what’s up with those Cardinals? Wildcard? Wow.

* This is a Major League Baseball open thread. Cub fans don’t bother. You clearly back a minor league team.

    Next year for the Cubs….

  2. - Grandson of Man - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 11:55 am:

Weaning is not strong enough. Cubs fans need professional intervention, like addiction treatment.

My current favorite Cub insult: When the Cubs last won a World Series, the Ottoman Empire still existed.

  4. - Ron Burgundy - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 11:57 am:

Not a great year for the Cards but about what I expected with Carpenter missing almost all the year. Will be tough to advance without Furcal out there, but as they have proven last year and in 2006, you just need to get in and anything can happen.

Sox are trying to give their spot away but the Tigers don’t seem to want it either.

    Cubs? Nevermind.

  5. - Shore - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:00 pm:

this season was about gutting veterans- almost done with soriano and marmol on the tarmac ready to go, injecting new players into the farm system-done, and playing out the string-done. This is called rebuilding, trash talking it makes no sense. You want to raise the 1908 thing, fine, but I don’t think any cubs fan has any expectations of winning games until 2014. The Arizona fall league starts soon, the cubs have 3 of the top 14 prospects including 2 of the top 4 signed this year who are expected to rise quickly through the system and be ready at some point in 2014.

Good luck to the white sox.

  6. - Responsa - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:02 pm:

It’s nice that the Tigers were so accommodating as to go into sucko mode at the exact same time the Sox were also having issues with suckiness. It shows there’s order in the unverse. We’re number one and I think we’ll end there. Go White Sox.

  7. - 47th Ward - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:02 pm:

Typical Sox fan, your devotion to your team is only surpassed by your disdain for the Cubs. If you guys could channel some of that hatred toward the Tigers or the Twins, maybe you could fill a few more of those empty seats at the Cell. Next year the Cubs will have fewer chances to help the Sox at the gate. They’re going to need some special kind of magic to sell more tickets. There isn’t another first place team with such poor attendance. Why is that?

To be fair, the Cubs won’t hit the 3 million mark this year and are on pace for the most losses in my life time. But we’ll still outdraw the Sox, even with our minor league team. Again, why is that?

  8. - Springfield Dan - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:03 pm:

When the Ricketts purchased the team from Zell he had allowed it to become an inflated priced debackle. The new owners took 2 years to evaluate what they had and the put in their own management system which required a total reconstruction. The demolition has occured and the restoration is in the early stages. Things will get better, Theo did not take this job to fail.

  9. - western illinois - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:03 pm:

Did i hear right Ricketts Sr is still going to spend 12 million on ads thsi year?
Will they still be asking for a handout?
And no one noticed it was the Trib with this comment today? The banrupt out fit that woned them for years and lived off the loser slogan.
How can anyone take the Cubs or the Tribune seriously.
Maybe the White Sox Card World series will wake them up but ….This is Illinois so nothing will change

  10. - CircularFiringSquad - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:04 pm:

Seems like a good time to renew the Sox-Cards, Cards-Sox WS talk
Probably a long shot from both ends of the see-saw
but after last year’s Cards 11 in 11 anything is possible.
Plus think of all the Cubbie fans melting like the wicked witch and the Rickett thinking they bought the wrong team.
    What a combo

  11. - Rich Miller - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:11 pm:

    ===But we’ll still outdraw the Sox===

Yes, you’re the most popular girls in class. Also, losers.

  12. - Reggaeman - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:13 pm:

Best Insult I heard, “Cubs are six losses away from being eliminated for next year.”

  13. - Mouthy - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:17 pm:

I think if Romney wins the Cubs will be in line to receive Pakistan’s foreign aid next year plus a jihadest Molotov cocktail throwing left fielder that has a “flamethrower” for an arm. The Cubs will be ready for the Sox !!!

  14. - Aaron - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:17 pm:

It’s hilarious to me (Cards fan) how Cubs fans continually tout marginal prospects (Mark Bellhorn!!) and place the blame on veterans who are actually producing. Soriano is arguably having his best season since 2007. Marmol (who has always had control issues) was the greatest thing eva two years ago, now those guys are “on the tarmac ready go go”.

Oh well, the next Mike Fontenot is out there…

  15. - Responsa - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:19 pm:

We attended two Cubs games and three Sox games so far this year–have tickets for two more Sox games this week. A good friend along with a small group, has had and shared the same season ticket block of Wrigley tickets for 30 years. Used them for entertaining clients, for family get togethers, and they always sold the rest– often at a profit. This year for many games they could not even give the seats away. I say this not to gloat, but to suggest that even true Cubs fans apparently have endurance limits.

  16. - OneMan - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:24 pm:

== Yes, you’re the most popular girls in class. Also, losers. ==

Three would get me banned comments all came to mind…

  17. - x ace - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:31 pm:

Ship the whole Ricketts bunch downstate to join up with Plummer and Eggers. Wrigley and his “College of Coaches” look good next to the current clowns in charge.

  18. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:34 pm:

Steve Rosenbloom-still on the payroll of the Cubune.

I’m going to the White Sox game tonight, Chris Sale on the bump!

  19. - Anyone Remember? - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:55 pm:

    Best Cub insult question.

Is a person wearing a T-shirt that says “Chicago Cubs 1908 World Champions” a Cub fan, or a Cardinal / Sox fan rubbing their noses in it?

  20. - lake county democrat - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:56 pm:

Cub fans seem willfully blind to the signs that the “rebuilding” plan is a bluff and that Ricketts does not have the money to be a “Red Sox-like” contender. Did they not see daddy’s youtube video where he recounts how Tom only sold the family with the “fans come out win or lose” line and how they demanded Tom put $50 mil of his own money in to assure it will be run at a profit? Goodness, they even made their scouts double-up on rooms and take the el to CubsFest last year - now that’s the way to attract top talent! By the way, how’s the GM’s last team doing after a few years of his “rebuilding”? And as a Sox fan who truly loves old stadiums, it’s sad to see what they’ve done to Wrigley to eek out some extra bucks - it’s far more of a “old vs. modern” clash than the renovated Soldier Field because the old and the new are spliced together.

  21. - Esquire - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 12:57 pm:

The Sox have also been the beneficiaries of taxpayer subsidies from the state, including a sweetheart deal on the lease for their ball park (for example, no rent paid for the entire 2005 postseason as the lease omitted this critical term).

I have always admired and envied the White Sox in terms of their superior scouting and player development, I wonder how many extra farm teams and scouts the Cubs could sponsor with a similar taxpayer subsidy?

  22. - Frank - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 1:04 pm:

===Typical Sox fan, your devotion to your team is only surpassed by your disdain for the Cubs. If you guys could channel some of that hatred toward the Tigers or the Twins, maybe you could fill a few more of those empty seats at the Cell.===

Typical Cubs fan, you don’t even pretend to defend the merits of your team anymore and jump right into attendance.

I hear the Cubs are planning another parade for their 21st consecutive attendance trophy!

  23. - Esquire - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 1:06 pm:

An afterthought, the Cardinals still have a huge following throughout Southern Illinois and many neighboring states (Kentucky, Arkansas, etc.). The Cubs have somehow managed to attract fans based upon better teams during the dawn of radio broadcasting and going on cable television. The White Sox have no regional following whatsoever (give or take a few taverns in Gary and Joliet). What gives? Where is the marketing plan? Empty seats in the middle of a pennant race. I attended one Sox game a few months ago and it seemed like most of the crowd was composed of Detroit fans who made a road trip.

This is one for “Unsolved Mysteries.” The Sox are based in Chicago, but draw like a small market team.

  24. - Stones - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 1:09 pm:

As a Sox fan, this season feels a bit like the end of 2005. We almost blew a huge lead to the Twins and were down to a 1.5 game lead. The rest was history - our pitching took over and we never looked back. I can only hope for a repeat performance.

  25. - What planet is he from? - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 1:48 pm:

Meh..I’m a fair-weather Cards fan and was in favor of a wild card team, but I can’t get excited about a second one. Go whomever. Maybe even the Sox.

  26. - Yellow Dog Democrat - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 2:15 pm:

=== maybe you could fill a few more of those empty seats at the Cell…There isn’t another first place team with such poor attendance. Why is that? ===

Um, maybe you’ve heard of the Recession?

=== the Cubs won’t hit the 3 million mark this year and are on pace for the most losses in my life time. But we’ll still outdraw the Sox, even with our minor league team. Again, why is that? ===

    1. Wrigley has the best cell phone reception of any beer garden.

    2. Excessive cell phone use causes brain cancer.

    3. Carrying your cell phone in your pocket has been linked to testicular cancer as well. You can insert your own joke here…I heard a great one last week.

  27. - Siriusly - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 2:33 pm:

If Sox fans had half as much passion for their own team as they do for hating North Siders, maybe there wouldn’t be 15,000 empty seats at Comiskey every home game in the midst of a pennant chase.

  28. - Rich Miller - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 2:35 pm:

===If Sox fans had half as much passion for their own team as they do for hating North Siders===

Oh, please. We love our team. We only hate on y’all because we know it bugs you.

    Works.

  29. - nieva - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 3:21 pm:

One of the few pleasures I have left in life is knowing the Cubs will make their yearly visit to the cellar and the Cards will be right in the thick of it!

  30. - G'Kar - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 3:24 pm:

Since this is an MLB open thread, let me mourn a little for my beloved Pirates. I wasn’t interested in them winning the wild card, all I wanted was for them to finish above .500 for the first time in 19 years! I thought they were going to do it, too. Ah, but September really is the cruelest month.

But at least they will have a better record than the Cubs–again!

  31. - Wensicia - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 3:32 pm:

    “Works.”

Umm..no, it doesn’t. If you have the winning team, why waste energy on anything else? Why do the Cubs still bug YOU?

  32. - Rich Miller - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 3:34 pm:

===Why do the Cubs still bug YOU? ===

It surely does if you’re asking that question.

    Cubs…relegation. GO SOX!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. - sal-says - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 5:17 pm:

Nobody should care about the Cubbies. They don’t. As long as the folks come out & buy lots of tickets.

For whatever reason(s) the NEW and IMPROVED management ‘cast of thousands’ love enabling goofs with ‘Oh, he feels bad about that screwup’ and HUGE contracts for a few that can’t keep their heads in the game for a couple of hours at a time.

Didn’t take very long for the NEW Cubbies to assimilate the ways of ALL the OLD Cubbies, did it?

  36. - Soxfan - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 10:18 pm:

Sox win! As for the Cubs outdrawing the Sox, I’m a perfect example of why: I’ve gone to Wrigley twice this year; the Cell not once.

Wrigley is a throwback to baseball’s heyday. The Cell (albeit much better today than when it first opened) is a throwback to the concrete monstrosities of the 1970’s.

Old Comiskey was my favorite ballpark, and moar Sox fans will agree with me. If old Comiskey was still around, the Sox would be outdrawing the Cubs almost every year — just like they did from the 1950’s to the early 80’s (you can look it up).

  37. - Anonymous - Monday, Sep 24, 12 @ 10:33 pm:

=Yes, you’re the most popular girls in class. Also, losers.=

lol Never realized baseball could be so brutal.

=HUGE contracts for a few that can’t keep their heads in the game for a couple of hours at a time.=

Also so similar to IL politics.
