“It looked better in the can”
Thursday, Oct 18, 2012 - Posted by Rich Miller * Here’s a really good ad from Democratic congressional candidate Brad Schneider. Not your usual political stuff, for sure… Your thoughts? …Adding… In case you were wondering, that’s an Adelstein Liston spot.

Is it just me, or is the ad not playing for everyone? I get an error message.
- How Ironic - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:25 pm:
Played for me, pretty creative.
- Northsider - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:29 pm:
Played for me, too. Also.
I liked it. It’s different enough to cut through the clutter of crap polluting the airwaves.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:29 pm:
JS, try clicking the link instead.
- Responsa - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:30 pm:
I dunno. I just don’t think trying to conflate sitting congressman Dold with the Tea Party (by saying Republican equals Tea Party) works in this particular district since the voters in the 10th (at least the old 10th) know better–even if they do not plan to vote for him. Maybe there are enough new constituents to the newly formed district to make trying to redefine him worth spending the money on this ad. But I sort of doubt it.
It is a rather different and very pretty ad. Might have been better and more effectively used in another congressional district where it was more factual, though.
- Just Observing - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:31 pm:
It took me several times to get it to play.
Eh, after watching the ad, I don’t have strong feelings one way or the other.
- cynical - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:34 pm:
Ending the medicare guarantee is unpopular, but if the country can’t afford it what other option is there? We have all of these sacred cows that can’t be touched, but we still don’t have the money to pay for them. So let’s do nothing until the economy and goverment finally collapse, and then nobody gets anything. The usual short-term political thinking to get reelected but not solve any problems.
- 47th Ward - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:38 pm:
It’s better than some recent ads with the scary music and dark images. This one might get some people to watch and at least is a break from the standard fare of attack ad.
Whether Dold is or isn’t a Tea Party hero isn’t the point. The point is that a vote for Dold empowers the Tea Party. That should be a powerful message in the 10th.
- Will Caskey - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:45 pm:
Fun ad. Textbook MO for a certain way of communicating independent voters in D-drawn districts but for whatever reason vote R. Smart/concerned looking lady is surprised and has serious doubts now after seeing the facts.
I say this as a compliment, incidentally. There’s not a whole lot of ways to get that sort of message across to that sort of voter.
- Red Ranger - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:45 pm:
Very effective. DCCC/Schneider spending a lot of money trying to make Dold into card-carrying Tea Party member. Dold’s “google search” ad is sort of a response, but that ad isn’t on nearly as often as the ads linking Dold to Tea Party.
- todd - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:51 pm:
creative
- wordslinger - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 3:54 pm:
Home run. Best of the season, by a mile.
Original, smart, funny, friendly, memorable — all in a devastatingly negative way, lol.
Definitely “my cup of tea.”
Anyone know who produced it? Sign them up.
They’re not phoning it in, like the shops producing the same, dark, dreary, cookie-cutter spots this year.
You know the ones — show the opponent in an unflattering black-and-white photo taken while they seem to be struggling with incontinence, then bath the hero in vivid color, surrounded by flags, babies, grandmas and “normal” people. One size fits all.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:01 pm:
Has to be one of the best ads I’ve seen in years. Well-scripted, produced, and delivered. Creative, memorable, and definitely appealing.
I agree with everyone else that it’s a way better “going negative ad” than the gloom and doom, psycho/socio-movie-music-laden ads on which candidates obviously spent big bucks only to grate on the nerves of viewers.
It’s so good, as a matter of fact, that even after viewing it, you’re not sure whether it was negative–though it brought the point across. (And, the deliver of the “Eww” line…priceless.)
- k3 - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:03 pm:
One of the best ads I’ve seen. Very memorable, stands out from all the other cookie-cutter crap from the D trip and RCCC this year.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:06 pm:
=You know the ones — show the opponent in an unflattering black-and-white photo taken while they seem to be struggling with incontinence, then bath the hero in vivid color, surrounded by flags, babies, grandmas and “normal” people.=
lol And the only black-and-white photo taken since high school graduation picture day where the old complexion was acting up a bit. Though I do have to admit that I like the ones photographers sometimes catch of the “Lifestyle Lift” tell tale marks below the cheek bone and near the jaw.
Karma.
- The Shadow - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:14 pm:
I did actually enjoy that. It will cut through all the ads on TV and it made me laugh. WIN! WIN! Nice to see people thinking differently.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:14 pm:
I even like that fact that it’s taking place in someone’s kitchen and focused on a couple most probably wouldn’t mind meeting and possibly befriending. No pretenses–and selecting the paint shows that they’re working together to “improve thing,” a message that could easily apply to their selection of candidates (working together to elect someone who will improve things).
Much better than ambitious scenes of heavy machinery slashing and chopping, boats crusing down a water way as if headed to demolish the building in front of them, etc. Way to much drAma.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:15 pm:
Sorry…”working together to ‘improve something’…”
- Whatever - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:21 pm:
Creative, but does it have impact? It might be a little too obtuse, even for that district.
- Tonto - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:22 pm:
Bad chromatic key always looks so phony. Couple that with the perfect actors who jump from fake world to perfect kitchen in a very noticeable way and I missed the message. All I noticed in the first viewing was Bob Sold .American and very poor production quality.
- hisgirlfriday - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:24 pm:
Love it. Like others said, this one can actually cut through the clutter of all the other doom and gloom horror campaign attack ads we get this time of year.
Great response to the ad that had the woman google searching Dold and having him claim to be an “independent” right before you heard “paid for by the Republican Congressional Campaign Committee”
- Obamas Puppy - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:26 pm:
Best one this year-easily.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:27 pm:
=Bad chromatic key always looks so phony.=
Better or worse production would have absolutely no impact on the “Ew.” Very effective.
- Colossus - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:30 pm:
Agree this is much fresher than what I’ve been seeing.
I don’t really consider this to be negative, but that might be because I’ve come to association “negative ads” with the production values mentioned above.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:45 pm:
Colossus, if you’re a Republican–which I am–it’s very negative, but still very clever and well-produced.
More ads as effective as this, and maybe I’ll begin to understand why it is that candidates–from the 10th, especially–refused to identify with their party. lol
- Disconnect - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:53 pm:
good ad, as noted will cut through. Purely plays to the base though. I’m not sure how many voters are so anti Republican.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:55 pm:
===I’m not sure how many voters are so anti Republican. ===
I think you missed the point. It’s not anti-Republican, it’s anti “too republican.” it’s a north shore thing.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:57 pm:
Just to clarify my last post. I’m OK with Republican values, and identifying as a Republican. I’m not OK with “Republican” candidates who want to have their cake and eat it, too, by only identifying with the party whenever it suits them.
That trend seems to have started in the 10th, and I’m glad that someone from the 10th is now reminding them of who they are.
- wordslinger - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:58 pm:
–I’m not sure how many voters are so anti Republican.–
Still, no one appears to be running as a Republican or a Democrat this year. The party brands certainly are not out there.
All candidates are describing themselves as “independent voices.” Who love Medicare. And will stop the shipping of jobs overseas, lol.
- G. Willickers - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 4:59 pm:
@ Responsa -
What is not factual in the ad?
- Dold did vote to end the Medicare guarantee (ie, voted for the Paul Ryan budget)
- Dold did vote to cut funding to Planned Parenthood (24 hours after voting to keep it — voted against it after he voted for it)
- Dold did support letting middle class taxes go up before abruptly changing his tune at the 11th hour last December
- Dold did vote against a motion to ban drilling in or near the Great Lakes, that’d include Lake Michigan
These are all thing the Tea Party supported. These are all things Bob Dold supported.
…What’s not factual?
- Red Ranger - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:01 pm:
Rich nailed it. This ad is very north shore. The only way this ad is more north shore is if they were wearing New Trier sweatshirts…or more likely polo shirts.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:11 pm:
Is the north shore known for polo?
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:12 pm:
===Is the north shore known for polo? ===
No, but polo shirts, yes.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:16 pm:
Thank you, Rich, for clarifying.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:21 pm:
And the guy in the ad is wearing a polo shirt, while painting. Tres north shore. lol
- Wensicia - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:24 pm:
The thing is, the North Shore people won’t be changing their vote. Those of us who live outside of the North Shore in the Tenth don’t wear polo shirts. This ad doesn’t impress me.
- Rich Miller - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:27 pm:
===Those of us who live outside of the North Shore in the Tenth don’t wear polo shirts.===
I wear polo shirts all the time, man.
- The Captain - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:33 pm:
Great ad. The headline to the post, however, had me thinking of something else entirely. I’ll tell you when you’re older.
- Wensicia - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 5:35 pm:
==I wear polo shirts all the time, man.==
I won’t hold this against you; I’ll still read your work, anyway.
- Oswego Willy - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 7:41 pm:
Best ad of the cycle - hate that the Dems have a winning ad here … but best of all.
It’s different, it’s clever, it knows it’s clever, and it invites you watching to be part of the inside joke.
Get this Ad team working for the Repubs next time.
Very. Well. Done!
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 7:49 pm:
=I wear polo shirts all the time, man.=
And I have one that I’ve often worn while painting. It’s dark blue, has paint spatters all over it (some things should be left to professionals), and a nice tear from when Winston, my favorite yet cranky horse at Palatine Stables from long, long ago, decided to gently pull it away from me and then rip it when I refused to give him another carrot because he had thrown me off earlier in the day.
He got the other carrot…and I got a new shirt to wear while painting.
- Anonymous - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 8:03 pm:
But it doesn’t look anything like the one in the ad, mind you. At least not anymore.
- DAK - Thursday, Oct 18, 12 @ 11:12 pm:
This might be the best ad I ve seen in along time. And I m wearing a tee shirt (but its Cardinals). Sorry Rich and all Cubs fans.
- T.J. - Friday, Oct 19, 12 @ 2:02 am:
I expect this will play like the Biden-Ryan debate: proud Dems will eat it up, and almost everyone else will wonder why. And I wear polo shirts as often as possible.
- Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 12 @ 10:31 am:
What did I just watch? Terrible. And good luck linking Congressman Dold to the Tea Party. This is why Schneider is going to lose big haha.
- Anonymous - Friday, Oct 19, 12 @ 10:33 am:
Is the clip at the end supposed to be Schneider hard at work making ZERO revenue at his business? Dark room with a laptop? sounds like cadence consulting to me
