* I was at opening day at Sox Park yesterday for our 1-0 win. While the hitting could’ve been much better, obviously, I’ll take the win.

Baseball hope always springs eternal in April. So, let’s hear what you have to say about the upcoming season.

  1. - Bill White - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:01 am:

Having a seat in the sunshine made a cold day bearable.

If Flowers hits 20+ HRS and Dunn has a 2012 season rather than a 2011 season, the Sox could do well.

  2. - Norseman - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:07 am:

Let me know if the Cubs make the World Series.

  3. - Ravenswood Right Winger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:10 am:

I believe the starting pitching for the White Sox will keep them in contention. If not, commence fire sale around June 15. Hopefully John Danks returns before June 15 as well.

  4. - Endangered Moderate Species - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:11 am:

A great Cub pitching effort by the Shark. The Cubs are ahead of the Cards by one game.

  5. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:23 am:

Given that AAA lineup the Cubs ran out there yesterday, I’m sure Cubs fans were happy to hear their 100-loss team was the most profitable in MLB last year.

Great news, too, for the leverage-less Ricketts in negotiations with the city. Forbes pegged them as the fourth most valuable franchise at a cool billion.

  6. - Responsa - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:25 am:

I, on the other hand, enjoyed Sox opening day with buddies in the warmth of Buffalo Wild Wings.

I’m still not over the loss of AJ, but I’m glad it was Tyler who secured yesterday’s win for the team. He needed that boost. I do wish him success both behind the plate and at the plate.

  7. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:26 am:

Cubs might not lose 100 games. Sox could contend for division if starters stay healthy.

Love the young ballplayers that have come up lately. Want to see the years guys like Trout, Harper, Strasboug and Sale will have.

That Trout is the most exciting young ballplayer since Junior came up and played the outfield with his old man.

  8. - Stones - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:28 am:

Sox 84 wins. Cubs 74 (if they are lucky).

  9. - Anonymous - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:29 am:

As a lifelong fan of the team from the Northside I have learned with age to not expect anything resembling a championship . Any improvement over 101 losses will be greeted by our fans as a sign that maybe ,just maybe, they are on the right path for the future. In time we will be proven wrong , just like we always are…

  10. - Roadiepig - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:32 am:

Anonymous at 11:29 was me - new phone and forgot to fill in he name box ;-)

  11. - Chavez-respecting Obamist - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 11:42 am:

I am no longer a fan–Bud Selig has ruined baseball, IMO. But I loved seeing and hearing the Ponces on Chicago Tonight last night.

  12. - Wumpus - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 12:36 pm:

Marmol is in mid season form. Flowers called a shut out, hit a homerun and is not a jerk (from what I understand). 3 strikes, he is in.

  13. - 47th Ward - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 12:36 pm:

The Cubs are in first place. There. I said it.

I thought coming in to the season that another 100 loss season was possible. If they keep sending Marmol out in the 9th to protect a lead, then 100 is within reach. Hopefully we’re near the end of the Carlos as Closer show, and somehow he’ll figure out how to blow a trade at the last minute too. Theo should just take his medicine and release him. He couldn’t get a bag of used baseballs in a trade. Pay him to retire and see what someone else can do.

  14. - Mouthy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 12:43 pm:

With the Cubs luck Marmol will be traded for “a player to be named later” and then, when later arrives, Marmol is that player.

  15. - Kasich Walker, Jr. - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 1:07 pm:

I got ten bucks on the Sox to win it all. Pays $350.

Still, too bad IL GO Bonds aren’t available at lesser face values to be sold at convenience stores along side lotto tickets, beer, cigars, and state regulated cannabis.

  16. - wordslinger - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 1:15 pm:

Another Carlos — former Cub Zambrano — was in my local paper last week.

He finally sold his house in River Forest for $675,000.

He listed it in 2011 for $969,000.

He bought it in 2006 for $1.12 million.

    Ouch.

  17. - 3rd Generation Chicago Native - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 1:29 pm:

The Ponce’s did a nice job on the Star Spangled Banner. Tyler hitting a home run makes a lot of us missing AJ less worried.

  18. - Slick Willy - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 2:39 pm:

The Detroit Tigers should have the best record in baseball with over 100 wins and run away with the Central. The White Sox will be lucky to break the 80 game win mark.

  19. - Boone Logan Square - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:18 pm:

Chris Sale. That is all that need be said.

  20. - Just The Way It Is One - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 4:55 pm:

Passionate Baseball fan that I am, particularly for both the White Sox and Cubs equally (which I’m sure many of you would doubt, but it really is so), I really DON’T think you’d honestly want to read EVERYthing I would “have to say about the upcoming season,” so I’ll mainly note that I, personally was overjoyed at the results for both of my favorite Clubs yesterday, although, yes, I agree the Sox need a bit more batting practice in the near term, and I just hope they don’t over-use Chris Sale so that he turns into Stephen Strasburg too soon in his career (i.e. monitor that Pitch Count closely and have the guts, and wisdom, to yank him when he needs to it!) ‘cuz boy, as a former College Pitcher myself, so far, whoa, I just gotta say thathe looks good up on that Mound–REAL good: a real Stud so far…! And the Cubs better hope that SOMEbody other than Rizzo can hit (and Castro a pretty sure bet) in order to win some Ballgames AND somebody other than Samardzia can PITCH (’cuz, to his credit, the Kid looked sharp as a tack yesterday–just hope he can maintain it for the duration)…! In any event, Sox, Cubs, (or yes, for those of you a bit further South than me)-Cards fans, ENJOY!!!…’cuz in any given year, ya just never really know…! (Oh, by the way, I do think that the Toronto Blue Jays may be a real Sleeper this year and surprise some folks, too–just a hunch)!

  21. - corvax - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 5:26 pm:

Yeah Willy, Tigers all the way!

‘We’re all behind our baseball team, go get ‘em Tigers!
World Series bound and picking up steam, go get ‘em Tigers.
There’ll be joy in Tigertown, we’ll sing you this song,
When the Tigers bring the penant home, where it belongs…’

  22. - G'Kar - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 5:41 pm:

My Pirates have a better chance of winning more than 81 games than the Legislature has of crafting a constitutionally sound pension bill.

  23. - Someonehastosayit - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 5:41 pm:

Anonymous Cub fan: “Wait ’til next year!”

  24. - Esquire - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 7:25 pm:

Sox will hang around, but finish in second or third. The Cubs will struggle to reach fourth or fifth place. No expectations for the North siders this year.

The Sox will need to reload for 2014, but the Cubs may make progress next season.

  25. - Precinct Captain - Tuesday, Apr 2, 13 @ 8:20 pm:

    Cubs: 76-86
    Sox: 85-77

If you think the Cubs are going to lose 100 with a relatively healthy team, you don’t know baseball. If Samardzija and Jackson get hurt for extended stretches and Castro and Rizzo as well, then maybe the Cubs will lose 100, but I just can’t take you seriously if you don’t see the major improvements over the opening day roster from last season to this season. The roster isn’t a winner, but it is able to compete, unlike last year.

If the Sox are able to stay relatively healthy and make some breaks then I believe there’s a strong chance they will pick up a wild card spot. However, I think they would need a little help to do so. Nevertheless, if Ventura is able to get buy in like he did last year and avoid running out of gas at the end like last year, then the Sox should be in the hunt for most of the year.
